Missing the point about OJ presenting the safety to the movies stars. oJ won’t look them in the eye because, as we learn later, he learned not to look a predator in the eye. OJ viewed the people within the industry as predators. Also this scene showcases how KEKE and OJ each received half of their dads strength, but they needed to work together to survive (in the industry and against the alien)

the shoe: the TV dad was a nasa engineer. They mentioned how they sent chimps up to space for research (exploiting animas for science), The white shoe, upright like a jet, covered in blood, is framed by blue balloons. Jupe goes on to use the shoe, a symbol of the most traumatic day of his life, for profit. I believe that this is saying that sensationalism and exploitation are the foundation of the American dream.

“Alien intelligence” 1) we don’t even know if this is an alien. Angels line “UAP now, not UFO” was done to foreshadow that the ship was a living creature not an object. We don’t know that this is an alien. 2) they go out of the way to compare the ship to an animal. They spend a large portion of the movie establishing the parallels between Gordy and “Jean Jacket”. Animals, even intelligent animals, can be confused and fall for decoys. 3) creature physiology aside, the “abduction” or feeding feels similar to an esophagus. During the Jupe abduction sequence we can see the sacculation of the GI tract. Potentially Jean Jackets death was from suffocation due to airway obstruction or rupture

The metal ball that spooks the horse is normally something used by vfx artists to reference the lighting for when they do vfx work. They were doing vfx work with the horse which was why they brought it up to the horse. Personally I liked the movie. I felt like there was a ton of tension the entire time until the third act. The movie felt similar to "Signs" but did not have as good of a third act. 6/10

50:45 they tied it together with the eye pointing gesture. Oj did the gesture when he trained Jean Jacket (the horse she wanted to train). Now she does the Gesture to Oj when she is going to kill/photograph Jean Jacket (the monster) instead of Oj.

As someone who yawned through Salo and is incredibly jaded when it comes to shock content, that sequence of them being digested by the alien disturbed me like very few movies have. Close to Irreversible or Possession territory. True horror is not death, but agony with death as an unescapable conclusion, and that sequence so perfectly captured that feeling. Especially seeing it in a packed IMAX theater (got to see it at Lincoln Square, biggest screen in the US). Personally I think it’s Peele’s best film-not his most entertaining, but I just love the concept of a “bad miracle,” especially with what the world has gone through the last few decades. And I think the disjointed nature of the film is a feature, not a bug.

The Mantis was a core inspiration for aliens in the early days. They fit a lot of descriptions people would give. With the oval eyes etc.. Peel likely used it as a throw back to those older films.

I really liked the early fake out with the kids in the alien costumes. Firstly, it legitimately was very very creepy. Secondly, while we didn't know it at the time, it actually made sense that they would dress up as aliens because they had the alien costumes for preparing for the show. My gripe with it right after the scene while watching the movie was that it felt a little too convenient they would dress up as aliens when only OJ was looking for aliens. But later we know that the folks at Jupiter's knew about it too so it actually made sense retroactively.

Jordan Peele seems like a director/writer who imagines very evocative moments and imagery and then retrofits a movie around them. This works for better or worse. Lots of great moments but everything else is a bit haphazard

I think this movie is starting to grow on me. Initially I thought the movie was a tad bit underwhelming, despite the production values and acting being top notch. But the more I think about it, the more interesting and thought provoking the movie becomes. I still have issues with the pacing and some story elements, and I still prefer Get Out-I find that movie much more funny and entertaining-but now I think this movie is more solid than I originally thought. Also, I like this movie way more than Us. I think I need a second viewing to better solidify my thoughts, something I had no desire of doing after seeing Us.

I think that from a pure monster movie standpoint having the final act culminate in simply getting a picture of the monster represents so much more than that they could make some money off of it, but also represents finally defeating the monster, especially since it coincides with the discovery of just how vulnerable they truly are. The creature in a way represents the unknown, literally and possibly allegorically, it's primary danger comes from the lack of knowledge people have about it, both of it's existence and of how it operates, they play right into it's suction-y hands not realizing the danger until it's too late. So a group of people escaping with so much information about it, like how to spot it and even how to kill it, as well as evidence to back it up represents essentially a complete defeat. Monster and creature stories often parallel this same arc of unknown to understanding to defeat. This is just applying that age old formula to UFOs, which are the perfect partner for it, I mean, heck, it's right there in the acronym after all.
@clemmu
@clemmu Жыл бұрын
I agree. They suggest having “cooler” ways of killing the alien but that’s not the point. Their goal was always to capture the evidence and live to tell the tale, not to kill it. The final act supplies just that and is a complete end to that narrative arc

@@Meatloaf_TV even though you acknowledge it, I think you're underestimating how much more time and effort it would take to do a show. I like OP's suggestion of one they've all seen and one that's new. If they've all seen it they either wouldn't need to watch it again or could watch it with less attention/focus which would make it more feasible I imagine

The viewers can't see themselves and have no time to criticize themselves. If you exploit others you feed the viewer. The viewer has zero interest in you, if you feed it, it won't even eat you, it chews you and spits out, and shoves it in your face. Don't look at the viewer, then they have nothing to do with you, photograph each other, but not the viewer. Shut up and play your role for the viewer, and the viewer will be happy. The viewers have no substance and formless, and can vanish or pop off real easy. It's zero on defense and 💯 on attack. Genius Director and Writer, only viewers can criticize him.

Sarah, fun fact about X and Pearl: they got to the location to film X and then got hit with COVID so had to hold off for 2 weeks. In that two weeks the director To West and Maxine/Pearl actress Mia Goth wrote the prequel Pearl, got it greenlight by A24 before/during filming for X, so they just continued and shot both movies at once. That's how the release dates are so close together. IMO it's the coolest positive story about how COVID affected a film production.

EMPs disable electronics by overloading them. IE: shoving energy into them until the systems burn out or turning on all the logic gates at once and confusing the heck out of the programming. A capacitor, by its nature, can absorb a huge amount of energy. So the EMP would actually charge the capacitor. Overcharging the cap until it explodes is possible, but so is burning out the transistor that 'fires' the flash. More likely such a simple circuit would be fine from an EMP though.

I loved the first half of the film but totally checked out as soon as it was revealed the Alien was a creature and not a ship. It made it way less interesting and creepy. I do think the movie will grow on me tho over time. Also I agree with Sarah that the Gordy storyline was the best part of the film for me 🍿

Jupe seemed to focus on the shoe a lot and its orientation was the same as in the case, so it may be a sort of anchor/trigger for him to think about the incident; he doesn't focus on the chimp when thinking back but on the thing that brings back the memory. The shoe could have been on the ground but its placement in the case paints it over everything else

Overall I liked this movie, but I liked individual aspects better than the movie as a whole. It was less than the sum of its parts, and I really liked the individual parts, so overall it felt a little disappointing like it didn't live up to its potential. That, plus my anticipation because of my enjoyment of his previous two films, also contributed to a slight let down overall. But when I compare it to the vast majority of other movies I've seen this year, which is a lot, I still definitely put it well above most of the competition
