"Garrett survives a failed attempt on his life, only to tail the criminals back to their employer's castle, at which point he delivers a very pointed message by literally swiping the coinpurse from a crimelord's belt." That is awesome. I must now get this game just to experience this sequence.

Finally got around to installing Thief 3 the other day and I gotta way, there's one thing about it that impresses the hell out of me. The fact you can SEE garret's body if you look down, the fact it actually casts a shadow, the fact that even though it's there, it's not in your face there, but just subtly off to the side of your vision. It's great.

You mean "Deadly Shadows?" I'm glad that there are those who like the third game in the series. Tony Chang Deadly Shadows is great and I think most Thief fans think that by now. It's a mess though and have some rough edges in presentation and gameplay compared to the original games which were very clean and focused. I actually prefer thief 1 to thief 2. Like you said, the story is better, but I also really love the tomb raiding aspect, something that was lost in thief 2. The undead really create a sense of dread that most straight up horror games couldn't even come close to. Down in the bone hoard is one of the best examples of this, the feeling i got from delving deep within a haunted tomb is unmatched. The haunted cathedral is another memorable one, being one of the scariest missions of any game. And of coarse we can't forget Cragscleft prison. The way it opens with an eerie hammerite excerpt, followed by garrett's briefing of the mission, while hinting at the possibility that the place might be haunted. You're then dropped in and find the pace to be infested with the undead, it's shocking and unexpected to all of a sudden find undead in this medieval stealth game, not to mention they appear in only the second mission of the game. But back to the idea of tomb raiding, the underground city was another great mission. There's not a lot of enemies to avoid or fight, but it gives you the sense of being completely lost in an ancient place, where everything is alien and nothing works the way it would in a normal mission. That level is quite the experience. So when you say that you like Thief 2 more because it's more of a true stealth game, I get that. But I can't help but feel that Thief 2 lost a lot of what made Thief 1 special. I absolutely love both the games, but Thief 1 will always fascinate me more.

Personally i liked Thief 1 a little better than Thief 2... they're both great games but I liked the undead much more than all the robots and security cameras in the Metal Age But having said that, I really liked venturing around the city in thief 2, something you didn't really get to do in the first one
@justus4justice9 жыл бұрын
+Boccaccio1811 Same here. While Thief2 is the better game from a technical standpoint (tightened gameplay, better graphics, more cohesive as a whole), Thief 1 stands to this day as my favorite game Of All Time. For all the annoyance of zombies and monsters, I still distinct remember my bowels running for the nearest exit the first time I opened the door to main chamber in Return to the Cathedral. Lord Bafford's manor was released as the demo for the game and I spent more time playing that demo than I have any number of full fledged games. Thief 1: Not perfect, but still very much a masterpiece. My personal ratings for each game: Thief: The Dark Project - ★★★★★ Thief II: The Metal Age - ★★★★½ Thief: Deadly Shadows - ★★★ Thief - ★½

It's puzzling and more than a little annoying how often Thief 1 gets ragged on for not fitting neatly into someone's preconceived notions of how it should have been designed. Look people, the title of the game is not "Stealth". It is also not "Burglar". It's Thief, and as anyone with even a passing familiarity with Looking Glass's body of work should pick up on (hello, Ultima Underworld series), the title clearly refers to the Dungeons & Dragons flavor of thief. Which is to say, the sort of character who not only robs mansions, but also dungeon crawls, fights monsters, and butts heads with mad gods-- in short everything Razorfist dismisses as schizophrenic design is pretty much par for the course in any tabletop campaign. How he missed this connection is beyond me. Perhaps too much rageahol.
@GepardenK9 жыл бұрын
ZylonBane Yeah agreed, it was clearly by design and not lack of confidence. T2 has some really great missions but it lost something from trying to conform to player feedback and the zombie-hate. To be fair I think the zombie-hate T1 gets is largely because of poor pacing early in the campaign. By the end of the 3rd mission, which is the "warming up" period for a new player, half the content has been zombies and 2/3 has been claustrophobic dungeon-crawling. A open-ended Bafford like mission between Cragscleft and Bonehoard would alleviate much of the bad impressions new players get for the supernatural I think. I'm saying this as a massive fan of Bonehoard btw
@TheRageaholic9 жыл бұрын
+GepardenK That's not what the developers said on the Looking Glass Podcast series. Project Lead Tim Stellmach - as well as Randy Smith, if I'm not mistaken - outright admitted they 'didn't even really know what the game _was_ until a few months away from wrap'. So, clearly, the discovery process played a large part in the contrariwise design of those early levels.
@GepardenK9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes they changed focus when they found out that their stealth and AI system was much more interesting than their sword-fighting system, but this does not change the fact that they wanted to do a dark fantasy game. You can even see the same sort of thinking even in Thief 2 where they wanted to focus on dark steampunk instead. Sadly T2 was made in a really short time due to budget problems, so the latter half of the game have you face off against the same four enemy types (Mechanist maceman and crossbow-woman + Small and large Metalbeast) over and over again. .
@user-og6hl6lv7p9 жыл бұрын

Awesome commentary - Bravo! Thief is a story -- not an action sequence -- and I can only hope that the writers had more good sense than those who chose the voice actors. The new Garrett voice actor has a HUGE problem - he tries to mimic Stephen Russell’s original version of Garrett rather than inhabit the character of Garrett. I’ve directed and played many Thief fan missions where Garrett's voice is portrayed by someone other than Stephen Russell, and it works well when the actor keeps Garrett’s character in mind and skips the mimicry. Even if someone has never played Thief 1-3, the voice of Garrett in Thief "4" is will sound breathless and forced because the actor dreadfully fails to inhabit any sense of a real person. Clearly this actor was chosen for primary reasons other than voice-acting skill, and as much as this sounds like an artistic decision, it has all the earmarks of a bad top-down business decision. Supposedly the producers went with this actor so that voice-acting could be done along with acrobatic motion-acting at the same time. At best, this is a personal preference, yet in reality this duel-mode game acting concept is nearly total rubbish. Expecting an actor to produce his best voice work and best motion-capture work at the same time ensures mediocrity since rarely are both “best” performances produced in the same take. In fact, even with basic sound-editing tools a junior-level sound person could match the best motions to the best voice-acting. Furthermore, at least 90% of game-voicing is produced for drop-in comments - not voicing-acting during action sequences. So an insistence on casting acrobats to portray the subtlety and range of your primary characters is silly because it rules out the very best voice actors that are available. -frobber, producer/director - A Keeper of the Prophecies

On the hardest difficulty, that's exactly what happens. It's only challenging because they're freakishly resistant to death. Out think them all you want, but it doesn't mean shit if you can't damage them properly. Hence, cheap difficulty. TDP is the best. TDP took it's time introducing you to its world. You didn't jump right into the main storyline, but were given several "normal" days in the life of Garrett. This gave the developers plenty of time to introduce all the elements of their creation and slowly work up to the main plot. The levels set in more exotic locales served to present glimpses of a larger world, and the strong presence of undead hammered home the very real danger you faced...

Ho no, I mean the no DRM deal is excellent imo and I fell really sorry you think is not worth supporting... But what I mean to say is that old games are hard to get to work on modern systems, and steam cares jackshit about that, unlike gog who gives special treatment to these old games by making small tweaks, so everything you buy on gog is probably gonna run on your computer whiteout an hassle. Sometimes they even get new resolution options and they all bring bonuses like the game soundtrack, wallpapers and whatnot. I think this is all good incentive, and its not like steam's offline mode is a truly reliable feature...
@DrearierSpider110 жыл бұрын
dragonheart967 I hate to jump into an argument this old, but I'm going to. Steam's DRM still prevents you from installing games to a CD or flash drive, there's no support or refund policy, GOG versions are better optimized to run on modern systems, they come with extras as RomanImperialXII mentioned AND it's the same price on both services as long as you buy all 3 games bundled together. There's literally no downside to buying GOG and only negatives with Steam, at least for these games.

Are you going to do a Shock series retrospective at some point? Also, since you put System Shock in the trinity over 2, would you say you like the first more than the second? I really do, due to more complex maps, more distinct environments, better voice logs and atmosphere, and no shoehorned in character progression that prevents one from effectively role-playing.

Hey Razorfist I never knew you did a review Thief 3 for the GOG site. I actually stumble across your review accidentally while looking for other reviews, it was quite good and informative. Great Retrospective BTW . Have you tried any fan made mission or the dark mod for matter? Any good recommendation for FM?

Your rant at the end reminded me of Dee Snider ranting about the decline of heavy metal in the late 80's / early 90's.

Thief had a great story and was scary as hell. Thief 2 had the better level design and very fun missions. Both games are masterpieces and to this day, through all the Call of Duties, Crysis, Elder Scrolls, etc, are still my favorite games of all time

Finally, someone who deosn't worship Return to the Cathedral. Don't like the tomb raiding missions in general, but this one and Bonehoard made me ctrl-shift-alt-end, shiny loot be damned. "Schozophrenic level design" is spot-on.

Another excellent retrospective, Mr. Fist... I have to ask... What are your thoughts on some of the Thief community creations, such as The Dark Mod or T2X: Shadows Of The Metal Age?
