Thief 2014, what went wrong? Everything apparently. I had never played the original Thief games when I first played Thief 2014 so I had no nostalgia goggles. I knew what Thief was ish and I really liked Dishonored. I found Thief very lackluster and just boring however. It felt like it had no direction of its own and the story was B movie material at best. Its a mediocre generic AAA game but a bad Thief game. I bought the 3 original Thief games on sale on GOG in 2017 and instantly fell in love the the gameplay, atmosphere, story and universe. The GOG version of Thief(3) Deadly shadows with the sneaky upgrade mod, which I think is included with the installation of the game now(I'm not sure) works great on win 7, 8 and 10. Thief 1&2 on GOG also comes included with fan pacthes making the games fully functional on modern systems and with 1920x1080p widescreen res:)

Cheers! Yeah, it’s one of those mindless games that I like to play when I can’t be arsed to play something decent! It’s really not a good game at all. I doubt even Stephen Russell could have made it any more bearable. But you know those games where you’re not having fun but you also don’t hate it enough to turn it off? This is one of those for me. It’s so far removed from its parent series that it’s more like the devs tried to make a fan game but not do enough to get sued. It’s an odd one, for sure!

Flatbred I actually cut out a long section where I compared the two games. It really does feel like the team tried to replicate Dishonored with absolutely no understanding of why it was so successful, which I think is why Thief plays quite well but fails in many other respects.

Most of the devs from Looking glass studios that made Thief 1-2, ended up at arcane studios and made Dishonored 1-2. Even the original voice actor for Garret did the voice of Corvo. Thief 4 was made by people who never worked on the original Thief games.

I found Thief 2014 to be a perfectly serviceable and entertaining game for what it was, though I purchased it for pennies years after it released. The gameplay and controls were solid. If you're ever wanting to give Thief Deadly Shadows another playthrough, I'd definitely recommend using a mod called the sneakytweaker. Essentially patches the game to run on modern OS's and modern video resolutions, while also removing the loading zones from the levels and just making them all one big level like the old games. It's incredible, lol.

There are also some problems with things that are overly context sensitive. For an example, places where you could use rope arrows in original thief were wooden while in reboot, only specific marked places could be shot. Also, I would say that the sound mixing in this video would need improvement. This type of voice needs a bit quieter background music.
@JackTrustReviews6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it definitely suffers from being over simplified and restricting player freedom, despite the confidence of the devs. I’ve watched this video back once or twice since I made it and I do agree, the audio mix is rough. I’m still using fairly basic headphones when I’m sorting out the audio so what sounds fine to me would definitely sound awful to someone else. Appreciate the feedback, thank you!
@Altair20005 жыл бұрын
the hands are the worst part. knocking a guard out takes 5 precious seconds where og thief took less than 1. literally anything you do in this game forces you to sit through an animation. everything. it doesnt let you skip it or speed it up. it makes things more difficult and ironically less immersive.
@noobbotgaming21734 жыл бұрын
The hands are the least of anyone's concern. The presentation is mostly great. It's the linear design and the outdated tech (segmented levels) and story that drags down Thief 2014. I think it's funny people who dislike Thief 2014 say the stealth is not as hard as the first 2. But the fact that things take time as you mention show that Thief 2014 is hard if you don't wanna be caught doing stuff and not ko'ing anyone. Adam Sessler reviewed it best. There are great ideas to Thief 2014. It was just lazily made. Swoop, etc I think Thief 2014 has great gameplay in theory but the devs didn't do it well. The stealth is there. Different surfaces have different levels of noise and you can hit surfaces to distract people. The stealth is there but the gameplay and story isn't. If this game was made from scratch and a different engine and be like Assassin's Creed in the sense that it is open world and big. Citizens and guards roam the streets and you enter missions etc. Such a shame because Thief 2014 had potential.
@KaiserAfini2 жыл бұрын
Looking at some design documents, the devs were obsessed with this as a way to create immersion. But taking control from the player did the opposite. They would have been better served with a combination of a more diegetic UI design and instant interactables.

In the earlier games Garrett was young naive and ambitious. But Thief 4 shows an older and experienced Garrett. He lived through everything, and he is part of the city as much as the city is part of him. Forgive him for losing his humor and snarkiness, the horrors and disasters that he had to witness took it from him. Forgive him for not being a hot stud of a man, he has aged. And his lifestyle has aged him even faster. He's sickly looking and pale, but what are you gonna expect from a man living in the night and traveling the sewers for survival. Yes the map is complex and difficult to navigate until you get familiar with it, what can you expect, he can't really take the normal civilian roads now can he. Yes Garrett is depressing and unmotivated. He lost everything due to his greed and ambition when he was young. And he lost the only person he had any relationship beyond business, no matter if she ain't exactly a beautiful kind mannered princess. His life sucks and Garrett sucks and that what the game shows. And it's realistic and grim. The game, with its many flaws, is indeed a fun game worth playing. It ain't got the best story but it's still acceptable.
@dranyth3 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's anything about this statement that is correct. Firstly, it isn't even the same Garrett, and this Garrett is probably younger than the one in the original trilogy. The game is not fun or worth playing and the story is absolute garbage.

@Darth1Marik4 жыл бұрын
Oh man this video is fantastic, it's rare I find one like this where I totally 100% agree with everything covered in the video. The reason the original Thief Trilogy was so massively successful is because it was a victim of it's time. What I mean by that was the human imagination, the developers had a very ambitious idea. If you watch documentaries about the Thief series you'll learn they had alot of different ideas and in fact the game wasn't originally meant to be a sneaking stealing game at all actually, it just evolved into what it became by the ideas they kept adding and realized the potential it had. Going back to what I said about it being a victim is the hardware limitations at the time and as I stated the incredible ambitious vision the developers had. Thief: Deadly Shadows was what they originally wanted for the series in the first place but could not realize it until advancements in technology were made. This led them to be more meticulous and dedicated to creating a world that really felt alive, that each guard while simple an NPC to be an obstacle to your ultimate objective still felt like a real living breathing person. The guards have several personalities (although still pretty itchy for a fight) and you hear it through several conversations that they have for the player to find. One personality is a bumbling idiot whom the fans dubbed "Benny" which if from the way he talks and the things he says wasn't obvious of his lack of intelligence it's definitely the voice. Then you have the stern rule following no nonsense guard who doesn't ask any questions. He does his job and as long as he gets paid he doesn't give a rats ass. There are a few others but I think I've made my point. People who played the original series will know what I'm talking about as simply playing and listening you pick up on the guard quirks. Meanwhile in Square Enix 2014 reboot all the guards are just NPC's lifeless and not memorable in any way and this ruins the immersion that the first games had because as stated the guards were real people with real lives and personality. The limitations meant almost every NPC needed to be an asset that fulfilled a purpose of making the player feel that they are in a world set apart from the one they actually live. Tiny bits of lore are left around each level building the world of "The City" as well as conversations between NPCs informing the player that it's not just a game but a world that is existing. Because there was a limit to the mission briefings and in between cutscenes the games story had to unfold during gameplay for the most part. Meanwhile the 2014 Thief just has a lifeless mediocre story told through the typical modern graphical cutscenes during some missions and at the beginning or end of others. It's sad because alot of the ideas they had and what they did for 2014 felt like a real advancement of the series but it was poorly implemented and of course the fact it's NOT the original Garrett already has a bad disconnect from the original fanbase. I suppose it might have been hard to go back because the original Garrett's story did end after the conclusion of Deadly Shadows. But one of the most egregious sins the 2014 game had was the elimination of the fanatical factions that were essential parts of The City and the lore of the world, such as the Hammerites and the Pagans. All we got was Hammerite Cathedral in ruins towards the end of the game as a nod towards the original series which end sup being more of an insult. If you ask me Bluepoint Games needs to do a Remake/Remaster of the original trilogy to restart the series since they do such wonderful remakes. They could most definitely bring back the original series with updated graphics, mechanics and physics to start off getting interest of not only the original fans but attract new ones. THEN a possible sequel could be made maybe depending how successful the remade trilogy does. It seems like a fleeting dream at this point though.

It seems like by setting the game later they made it far more generic, what was cool about the setting was the 12th century steampunk setting with a knight juxtaposed against a factory with supernatural elements. It's what allowed the game to be so flexible with a large variety of enemies each with their own mechanics and a bunch of different tools without feeling jarring, you had magical elemental crystals and flashgrenades and it was naturral. Thief just looks like they stripped all the creative elements (Undead, hammerites, pagans) and just had guards with occasional mutants, heck although using it was usually last resort the original had a magic sword. Even the steampunk elements have been toned down to just victorian fare, they had electricity and cameras in the original not to mention what the mechanists could do. Heck the first game had you looting a wizards tower and killing a god, this just feels like dishonered without any of IT'S interesting elements.] TL;DR: they took out all the settings cool stuff.

This is a very thorough and well made analysis. Thief 2014 rubbed me the wrong way, and in so many ways, but to put it into words has been tricky. I especially like how you also give your thoughts to the game disregarding the context of the previous games, it helps sell the views presented as being more than just nostalgia talking, an excuse that sadly gets used a lot to defend against deserved criticism. What an excellent and fair analysis of what stopped Thief 2014 becoming a worthy addition to the first three classics. In a nutshell, atmosphere and character were not well developed. Game mechanics and overall look were fine, in my opinion. But to return to atmosphere, here is a great example. The Shalebridge Cradle level of Thief 3 was so terrifying I had to stop playing on several occasions. By contrast the Moira Asylum level in Thief 2014 had a few jump scares but almost no sense of growing dread, the very thing that made Shalebridge so nerve shredding.

I never had the chance to properly play all the Thief games, but I'll hold on to one phrase that stuck with me halfway through and was said towards the end as confirmation: "Thief is not a game about thievery". This sums up what went wrong for the most part. It seems that the studio's thought process was "everyone knows what Thief is so let's make a spinoff/side-story in this world" for it looks more like that rather than having its own identity. The lighting in some areas feels better integrated in the old games, those also have a better AI. Thief feels like the Ground Zeroes of its franchise (but not a cashgrab). Ah, 57 minutes of JackTrust is a good thing to wake up to, love these long videos! Honestly mad respect for these. Umbasa. (I hope we won't have DS remastered be a meme compared to Shadow of the Colossus, fingers crossed)

Smaller map with less ways to get around it, fewer guards and many scenarios that are forced (no choice in how you go about them), and at least early on they never give you a good reason to collect gold. As someone who enjoyed the original I would have been happy with the same sized maps, maybe a few more ways to get around (more open windows), and a basic rogue like system for upgrading your character to make harder maps more quicker/fun.

Ok, so I watched this video twice. While I'm a huge fan of the original games, I never tried to care about Thief 4. It was just too obvious it would be heavily simplified. And of course the rough development didn't help. 8:24 I actually think it's the opposite way. The levels in the first two games are sometimes built almost like real places, so a map isn't really needed. If the mansion is a big rectangle, then why do you need a map? On the other hand, the city in Thief 4 has a nonsensical layout, so playing without guidance leaves you with no logical way to go. The same might go for all the levels in Thief 4, but I can't remember them. 8:48 Garrett didn't draw the maps. He usually says where he got them. ;) I don't have much else to say. You have my respect for analysing this dreadful game so deeply. Really the only gripe I have is that the background music is sometimes pretty loud. It makes it harder to concentrate for long and I don't understand what you're saying sometimes. English isn't my first language and I'm not used to this heavy British dialect. The generated subtitles did help, though.

Thank you for so artfully articulating all of my thoughts on and struggles with this beautiful, terrible game. My initial interest in it came from an undying love of the series (Deadly Shadows in particular), but slowly became an obsession with the collect-a-thon, the one thing that gave me satisfaction after finishing the cut-and-paste story. It was an excuse to enjoy the gameplay loop, which as you mentioned is fairly fluid and engaging. And like you, I was endlessly fascinated by the story of how things turned out the way they did with the game. All the pieces are present--some even surprisingly polished--but the cohesion and care to create something greater than sum of its parts, something that did the original trilogy justice, is noticeably absent. Well When I played this game, I had no clue that it has predecessors and didn't bother watching reviews before playing this so I enjoyed it. Didn't want a remake. I would have preferred the continuation. Thief 3 left off to very promising horizon. A potential new character, with the potential of new dangers. But industries seem content with regurgitating content rather than making new things. I thought Theif was going to be sequel until I played it. Thief trilogy is the best there ever will be. I do not consider this remake part of the franchise. This remake is pretty, but it does not in any way belong to the series. It may as well have been its own thing, with different named characters.

I'm amazed with all the games you have! God, you'll be the perfect girlfriend/waifu for us guy gamers. Btw, I've played that game a long time ago and I was a bit disappointed with the mechanics because I had high standards when playing stealth games after I've playied dishonored and the MSG franchise.

John Michael Haha, I have been collecting games since the mid-nineties so I do have a huge collection of games. N64, Game Boy, Gamecube, PS1, all sorts. Best of all, all the old games and my consoles still work! I’ll play any game as long as it isn’t sports games. They’re the only thing that don’t interest me. Yeah, I’ve played the Metal Gear games and Dishonored was my favourite game back in 2012 so I was really disappointed that Thief tried to copy the style/gameplay but failed to understand why those series are so well loved. If they ever make another game, they need to do their research. Maybe hire some of the original developers!

Jack Trust you're lucky to have your old consoles still working. My ps1 and and 2 were long gone so I can only play those types of games from emulators. Btw, if you have played "limbo", "inside" and the "long dark" can you make a review of them as well. For me, those 3 were the most soothing and relaxing games I've ever played so I figured out it will go well once you make a video of it with your soothing voice. 😊
@JackTrustReviews6 жыл бұрын
I've played all three of those games, but I haven't finished The Long Dark. I plan on doing a video about Inside, but I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it yet. I'll probably tie it in to Limbo as well. TLD I'm not sure - I liked what I played of it but it didn't massively grab my attention. I'll give it another shot though, for sure!

Developers had no idea what made the original trilogy work. So they created just another AAA action title. All the people claiming the reboot is a great game are obviously suffering from gamer Stockholm syndrome. It's not just a bad Thief game, but seriously mediocre when viewed as just another game. So many BAD design decisions...☹

City hubs loading screens that require the players input as a quick time event are absolutely obnoxious, why do i need to make the effort to hide that fact that the game is loading? Also you must be 1 of the first people to mention about missions having so many points of no return, it's called Thief, it's a game about stealing things, and yet there are 1 way check points where anything behind you is lost forever?! Why is so much of the loot junk? it was never like that in past games, but in 4 you're taking cutlery, scissors, mirrors, i get it i do, silver is silver, but it all still feels like junk and one of the biggest issues i had with the game play is how so many animations take control away form the player, take downs are 1 thing i dont agree with, but collecting loot is way too far, essentially playing a short unskippable cut scene for every single loot pick up or draw opening, it's infuriating, The Last Of Us did it right, play an animation for picking up loot sure, but don't tie the player down on the spot until the animation is done, who cares that the animation doesn't line up perfectly, and for the love of god, if i am sneaking, which, you know it's a thief game and theres a high chance i am sneaking, don't have me stand up to perform whatever animation the game is showing me and clawing away control from me oh and lastly, the sound and lighting are somehow implemented with the gameplay far worse then the originals 20 years ago, in fact few games even today come close the the sound engine used in the OG thiefs, and the lighting although looking great, very often doesn't match up with how well the player is light, as if the lighting is "baked" into the level and not lined up properly with the levels ambient lights and then theres the AI... the ONLY thing Thi4f does better then the originals is the graphics, ffs devs, learn, please amazing vid btw, the most in depth on The4f i've seen

50:19 Are you serious??? This has got to be the worst excuse for a story I have ever come across! Its flimsy,its badly thought out,the characters are less than one dimentional, there is basically no solid beginning nor ending and the middle doesnt make sense.If you have seen a worse story please tell me what it was I would love to see it.

Beyond: Two Souls has one of the worst stories I've ever experienced, mostly because of the way it's chopped up and thrown around without any real regard for narrative cohesion. Resident Evil 6, for as much as I love the Resi franchise (except 6 and Revelations) has an abysmal plot for all 40+ hours of its 4 horrifically long campaigns. Dead Space 3 has a terrible plot that was unfinished because EA shut down Visceral Studios before they could complete the DLC they had planned. Beyond the scope of triple A games, there's also just... every DigiHom game ever produced. A lot of crap that gets sold on Steam is much worse, but I accept that those aren't really relevant to the discourse on Thief 4 because they're just indie crap on Steam, whereas this was supposed to be a big budget game. The story isn't great, it's just very generic and poorly thought out. But I've definitely seen worse.

This title should've just been about being a thief in medieval times. No steampunk bs, no cameras and no third person climbing. If they'd kept it about being a thief in medieval times stealing valuables from castles ecc. It'd have been way better. Completely ruined a potential franchise, smh.
@ZemplinTemplar4 жыл бұрын
Dude, the original Thief had a medieval atmosphere, steampunk tech, magic, etc., and it worked. But it was because the original developers knew how to design and write a game. This reboot was, aside from maybe a few competent devs, in the wrong hands. The writing alone is terrible. There is a Thief franchise, from 1998-2004, concluded. You can buy it very cheap on GOG and it's easy to run today, especially with the latest patches. Also, if you want a freeware alternative, google The Dark Mod. A freeware clone of the original trilogy's gameplay in a more modern engine. Do you want to be a medieval thief ? You have four different options, all great.

Dear Developers!! Thief is a Great, unique and awesome game and We Want Another!!! Remake all the old ones or make new ones but this great game needs to be revived! If the pc players don't want it then definitely make it for Xbox Series X and other consoles if ya want but we need another Thief game. I loved that remake gameplay and was left wanting more! We've been waiting for over 8 years now. 💯🙏🤞 and keep the supernatural and mysterious feel.

Actually, they didn't try to appease them at all. There's almost no respect for the previous property, but a lot of aping of Dishonored and various juvenile attempts at "edginess".
