Gary was speaking from experience. Teams knew they could physically bully Arsenal in the centre of the pitch and if you successfully did it during the game, Arsenal would be there for the taking. Arsene Wenger truly believed that if he had enough ball players, his team could out-pass their opponents. That's the belief Henry mentioned. And even when results showed the players he trusted to do that either wasn't good enough or couldn't do it for whatever reason, he still persisted. That is the arrogance that Gary was talking about.

Well said. That's exactly what it was. Soft players in the middle of the pitch were bullied. It's all nice when it does work out and passing is flawless but once it doesn't other teams could smell the blood. I believe we are still paying for Wenger's arrogance. Losing players every year and blaming the stadium was just a way to justify not spending any money. Partey looks soft not to mention the rest of our midfielders. We need a strong physical presence in the middle of the park.

As much as I hate Gary Neville and love AW, Gary is very much right here. Building stadium and not having funds to buy star players(the 40-50m kinds during that time) is one thing, but buying wrong profiles again and again, not addressing weak areas is different thing. We were crying for a top GK during 07-10 era, a DMF during 11-14, a prolific striker(partner or replacement of Giroud) during 14-17 but none of these positions were addressed. If that squad with Sanchez, Cazorla and Ozil had a prolific striker, Arsenal would have become champions at least once. Wenger always says that he was not given money but during his later years, he was given money and he used to waste it on average players like Mustafi, Lucas Perez, Chambers, Asano, Park Chu Young, Welbeck. I can never understand these signings.

Yes, the second half of Wenger(post 07) was full of technical players with no physicality. And this is what the current Arsenal team built by Arteta scares me.The current team is also full of technical players but the team is not strong enough physically. We have seen this team being outmuscled by opponents on several occasions this season. I hope Arteta addresses this situation in the 23/24 transfer window. If we want to challenge City and win the title, we need to add physical monsters(with good technique) in this team.

I noticed something from the Emirates on Sunday !! It was the awful look of the faded red seats in the stands !! That ground looks 50 years older than it actually is !! The amount of money they spend per year in wages and can't replace faded seats that make the stadium look terrible !! The seats in Highbury didn't look half as bad as that when it was demolished !! It costs a couple of pounds per seat in a football stadium the size of Emirates. 60,000 x £10 per seat including fitting would cost £600,000 ????? That's less than a months wage to Gabriel Jesús. Do you honestly think Man City's owners would allow plastic seating to fade that way and leave it looking old and tatty ? And City do not even actually own the stadium, it's on 250 lease !! Arsenal didn't move into Emirates until 2006, Man City moved into Etihad in 2003 and their Stadium was used for the 2002 commonwealth games the year before. That Stadium is a representation of the club to the world. The photos, tours, television coverage etc all have the world's eyes on that structure to display the club to the whole world. And the seats are faded all different drained shades of red? A club of Arsenals size should easily be able to afford to replace the entire 60,000+ seats every single summer to keep that stadium looking at its best !! Minor details make massive difference !! City don't only develop the squad, the backroom staff, the academy, the training ground, the stadium, the sponsors etc !! They spend fortunes every year identifying ANY areas within the clubs infrastructure and global marketing and research everything the best clubs in the world are doing to improve, strategize their plan and immediately take action to better the competition in every single area from restaurants, to match day programmes, to safe standing, to club tv, to interviews, to facilities, to stewarding, to hospitality, to dressing rooms, training grounds, coaches, playing staff through every age group, education for youth players, female sides, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING !! It's that attention to detail that is bringing the club success, they do not stand still or rest on their laurels, they want to grow, to sustain success, to be the best in all areas not just on the field but throughout the whole club !! Maybe 10-12 years ago when City were initially sold to Thaksin Shinawatra and then the Abu Dhabi United Group, players wanted to come for financial reasons solely but not anymore, they want to come now because we offer the best there is to offer in every single department and if there's better anywhere, we address it and up our standards to surpass them time and time again.

Gary making valid points that Arsenal fans don't like to agree with because they can't question Wenger. There are so many good players he spotted who ended up going elsewhere while we ended up signing below average players. Yes, they say there was no money because of the stadium, but let's not forget that players weren't that expensive back then. Also, signing players and converting them to play in different positions. The problem with letting other teams improve while you're not improving is that it becomes very difficult to catch up. Just see how Manchester City have invested their way into being miles ahead of everyone else in the Premier League. Catching up and going past them will be very difficult.

Arsenal signed Diaby. Has Neville forgotten? He was identified as the new midfield general. Unfortunately was injured too often. Wenger was one of the first managers in EPL to signed 2-footed technical players liek Hleb, Rosicky, Cazorla & Arshavin. Arsenal just couldn't compete with Man Utd & Chelsea's spending power. Wenger also revolutionised thr culture of football in England with diets & training & limiting alcohol. Other clubs caught up.

The key part was Vierra leaving and Wenger bought in a lot of soft players. when Vierra was there, no team want to mess with his teammates on and off the field . Several years after he left, other teams started to bully Arsenal players including multiple career-ending tackles during that period. He together with Roy Keane were true leaders and bosses. But unlike Wenger, Fergie knew this and brought in players with tough character to balance the team (Vidic, Rooney, Evra, etc)

He was just about all right, definitely nowhere near the profile of a Vieira, Gilberto, or even a Partey or Song. We’re defensively weak, I don’t think Gabriel’s composed enough to lead from the back. Would a strong technical DM help? Certainly. thierry knows its not good enough. hes just trying to be nice and PC about it...after all he still has a close relationship with arsenal football club, and that includes everyone from the board down to the players. he doesnt want to visit the club one day and have players remember him slating them on international television.

If it’s about the goal post to fit narrative, how about net spend since 1960s? 🙄 As much as money is a big factor to success, the recipe is spending wisely which Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man United have all failed to do! Before you start any project, a club should invest in a world class manager that they actually trust and will stand with him when results are not going their way! Chelsea has been good at investing in good manager/world class but they lack patience that’s why they’ve never had a period of sustained dominance like we’ve seen with Man United or Man City currently. If only they could’ve kept Tuchel 🤔 we’ll never know 🤷‍♂️

I don't know what Thierry is talking about having Coquelin and Cazorla being 'good enough'. Wenger got seduced by Barcelona and their small sized, nimble, skilled players, but they had big soldier like personalities to support the skilled players, win the ball back, and put some muscle into defending. Wenger filled up the team with small sized players and forgot to add the muscle.

Man City decimated Arsenal's squad and they never recovered. Then you lose Fabregas, RvP, Song, Hleb, Rosicky with injuries, Almunia was awful, don't even mention Sanogo 🤦🏾‍♂️, and the team never recovered. Moving from Highbury killed Arsenal along with the new owners the other teams had

Wenger struck gold by being the first one to really give foreign talent and especially Black players a chance. They turned out to be more intelligent (Bergkamp), skillfull (Pires), faster (Henry) and stronger (Vieira) than their White British counterparts, often by an embarassingly wide margin. Then everyone started doing it, and the gig was up.

Being White or Black has noting to do whit it. It all comes from the upbringing, black players are good at football because they are ofthen from poor places and have the drive to be the best and help their familly. Afcorse if you come from a competitive familly or a very good footbal nation. And not to mention the teams you played at as a young boy, who might or might not be good at bringing talent up.

We need to add DM, CM, CB and CF to our squad. We need quality not quantity. We need to sign Declan Rice, Caicedo, Tielemans, Vlahovic, Gundogan, Cancelo etc that has quality and mentality. Is Arsenal the big team ? Or become medioker team ? Come on, wake up, we need more quality and mentality in our squad.
