Hi Greg. As a true Irish man from Dublin Ireland, who have seen Thin Lizzy 6 Times in my Lifetime. It is awesome to see that they still capture the younger people with there Music today. I would like to take the time to explain the Names for you. "Roisin Dubh" is the Irish Name for Dublin, as you know we were suppressed by the English for 800 years, so a lot of people spoke in their native tongue Irish to confuse the English. The best pronunciation would be Rushine Dove.... Most of the Artist Names are Great Irish Poets. James Joyce , William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde.. George Best the Footballer, Brendan Behan, Dublin Writer and Actor, Van Morrisen, Whiskey in the Jar, The Mountain's of Mourne, Playboy of the Western World, is one of Irelands oldest and longest running Plays, Arsures Shan I was born and reared there, is a tribute to when Scott Gorham was born in California, A Long Long Way from Tipperary , great Irish Song. I hope that they help you out.. Regards Alan Long , Dublin

Flawless epic from Thin Lizzy's finest studio album. Tony Visconti really brought the best out of the band. I remember the very first review I read of this album, Record Mirror, I think it was, singled out Brian Downey's performance across the entire album. Quite rightly, as you did. And then there's the irresistible Phil and Gary combination telling the story. I don't know if there was another guitar player in 1979 who could have created and played a solo like that?

Thanks for a great review of one of my favourite Lizzy tracks. Along with Emerald and Vagabonds I love the Celtic nuances. Saw Lizzy at Manchester Apollo (UK) on the thunder and lightening tour. All the best from the Isle of Skye, Scotland

Love love love this song. So much I got a Black Rose tattooed on my arm… Roisin Dubh - is actually pronounced - ‘ro-sheen doo’v… but with poetic licence Philip pronounced it ‘dove’ in the song… Here’s a quick Irish lesson - if there is a ‘h’ in the word it softens the letter… ie the legendary Irish name Siobhan - becomes Shove-on…, Caoimhin - Kee-veen … it usually makes the letter before turn into a V. And in this case … it’s ‘doov’… with an almost silent v at the end… Here endeth the lesson… lol

It gets more complicated, dialects. So Ulster Irish has Dubh (Black or Dark) pronounced as 'Duu', but Munster Irish has its 'Dove' . And then Roisin, it also gets a few angles. Up north it is more 'Raw sheen' and in Connaught its more ' Row' as in what you do in a boat. Its all good craic (crack). - (not the drug lol).

Thank you for sharing this, it's obvious you love Phil's music as much as I do, he was unique and there will never be another like him.

Greg this is a wonderful choice to celebrate Phil's birthday. Sorry I am on catch up, but I am sure Phil or you wouldn't mind for these delayed comments. I was so touched that you choose this track for Phil's birthday because this track celebrated Ireland from both sides Belfast as Gary comes from Northern Ireland and Phil brought up in Dublin which is Southern Ireland. I think you made a fantastic choice mate. Sorry again for the very late catch up. But I appreciate you for keeping Lizzy's legacy alive. Your videos and reactions are awesome. Phil would be so proud of you. Oh and just to add, Rockula and A night in the life of a blues singer was recorded during the Black Rose sessions. Both classic sounding songs but for some reason got listed not good enough to go on the album. But due to time restraints I guess something had to give. But I think the record company should have released them as b-sides on the singles from that time. Instead of using With Love as a b-side. Strange choices were being made back in those days from record companys.

An excellent choice for the great man, really showcased his brilliant if not underrated vocal range. Ps Gary Moore was killing it on this track

Thanks for highlighting this mate. Although Robbo and Scott were my fav pairing in Thin Lizzy, without Gary Moore in the band, this songs solo guitar work couldn't have been performed in the way it was, so hats off to Gary. He was awesome on this song.

Great to see/hear someone reacting to my favorite Thin Lizzy song! Summer of 2019 i visited Dublin and went to Phil's statue and also his grave. This song is imo best of Ireland! Scott Gorham's first impression of Gary Moore was "uh oh i think i'm in trouble here, don't know if i can catch up with this guy"! At the end of the solo you only hear one guitar Gary's. Brian Downey really gets to show his skills of playing fast!!

So happy I found your channel… so much Lizzy to binge on. 🤩 As a proud Irish woman I’m delighted to learn even more about Phil and Thin Lizzy from a true fan. Your pronunciation of Irish words isn’t too bad. It’s a difficult language. Dubh as in Roisín Dubh is pronounced Dove 🕊 or Duv

Hi Greg. Just catching this video today . Great track and good choice for Phil's birthday tribute. If you like Celtic rock can I suggest Irish rock band Horslips - they were contempories of Lizzy and very much the original Celtic rock crossover band. Phil and Gary would have been very familiar with them. Try "Dearg doom" or " Book of Invasions " for a Black Rose vibe from earlier in the 70's. Cheers.

In terms of the references; 'it was a joy that Joyce Brought to me' is referencing James Joyce, an Irish Novelist 'while William Butlar waits' is referencing W B Yeats, an Irish poet 'And Oscar, he's going wild' is referencing Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet 'Ah sure Brendan, where have you been?' is referencing Brendan Behan, an Irish poet 'and Georgie knows best' is referencing George Best, one of the greatest soccer players of all time 'van is the man' is obviously Van Morrison Great song, I was 'born and reared' not far from the 'Mountains of Mourne', but moved to England when I was 22. Listening to this gives me a taste of home, it's good to see it being appreciated by people from across the pond.

Epic track, Great reaction Greg and interesting information. I didn't know the solo was made up of trad Irish folk tunes. On Lizzy I was surprised Andy didn't really care for Jailbreak when he and Alex did their reaction. I think it was the second Lizzy song I ever heard after Boys are Back in Town and I loved it on first listen.

Beserkers aren't fictional, I know a few 😉🤐🏴🐙 historically they existed as the Celtic front line right up to 1745 and Culloden, arguably after the clearances they still existed in the Confederate States ACW?

That was cool. I caught a lot of the references at the end, but not all. A monster of a song to play bass and sing at the same time. It was hard just counting it! lol! Definitely an epic that deserves multiple listens. Thanks! I mean...T'anks. (another American who strives for authentic pronunciation) hahaha!
