Its stupid rule in america, that the waiter gets her/his money from tips, while it was the cook who made the delicious food in kitchen, so it could get tipped then, so waiter could get some money. Waiters should instead have salary, where they get paid the same amount of money every month from their boss no matter how much tips are given. In Europe tips are not always given, when its given to show appreciation for how delicious the food was and you tip more money to show that you appreciated it even more, while if the food was disgusting. You dont need to tip at all. Its ridiculous that in america you must tip, so tipping losses its meaning, when no longer it means that you appreciated the food a lot, when everybody must tip from now on. No wonder people longer going to restaurants, when their expected to tip every time, because the stupid rule that waiter gets her or his money from tips, instead from regular salary, while good food is the job of the cook, that leads to bigger tips being handed.

Don’t pay a tip unless you’re being seated and served at a restaurant. That’s the only time I’d justify it.
@3Hose6 ай бұрын
But handing me the wrong overpriced coffee is not some super laborious task. You chose to work for a wage.... I am assuming that it's a standard minimum wage job. Well guess what, minimum wage is all that job is worth. Baristas seem to think that fixing coffee is some elegant job that deserves more than any other fast food. It doesn't. If you are nice, pleasant and get my order right then I will CONSIDER giving you a tip. If not then expect a complaint not a tip. Wait staff work for waiting minimum wage (usually) and still make waaayyy more than minimum wage and usually more than a lot of blue collar work. So, everyone can just stop with the whole tips are an evil concept that only profits the restaurants. It benefits all involved. Restaurants can have lower prices and a better profit margin, wait staff make more $$$ (that they don't report) and the customers get better service. And I completely agree that tipping is only for sit down restaurants and bartenders.

In the case of delivery drivers, they know what they are signing up for, no different than a minimum wage barista. You get paid what you get paid. If you earn a tip then you might get one. Some people are cheap and wont give you a tip even when you have stellar service. That is the risk you take being in any field that is partially tip based pay. What is a livable wage? Where I am at $30/hr would be livable. Pays for a small 1 bedroom house, food on the table, a car to get you back and forth, and some play money. While $15/hr is poor. In other places of the country $30/hr makes you very wealthy. So, what is "livable"? Arbitrary names without definition make pinpointing these things impossible. Everyone's definition is different. To me livable is probably something way different than what you think livable is. This could also be because of my experience in life over yours giving me a different outlook on things. Like living in a trailer parked somewhere semi-nice could be enough for someone like me. Eating the same three meals everyday is also not a problem. Driving some car that has to be "fixed" once a year or less is okay with me too. For others it is, a 3 bedroom house, an almost model year car, and plenty of food variety.

Well, when someone is actually working hard to provide a service (waiter, barber, etc), they should be paid based on how well they do their job. If the customers leave tips for them, they'll be more inclined to leave more the better the service is, thus rewarding the service provider's effort and skill and incentivising them to work harder. That's silly. The needs of the seller are never related to the value of what is being sold. That is as true for labor as anything else. Government mandated prices only make it illegal for the seller of lower value things to trade. If government put a minimum price of cars at $5000, that would only make it illegal for anyone to sell their lower value cars. The same if true for labor. If you have some handicap and can only produce half what others can, you should still have the right to trade it. Think about it! Suppose you have a business selling twisted widgets and it takes the average employee 1 hour to twist a raw widget, and you can only get $10 more for the twisted that you paid for the raw untwisted ones. Your break even point, ignoring all of the other expenses, is paying something less that $10 per hour. That is the maximum possible value of the labor! Now someone with a disability comes in and is only able to work half as fast, taking two hours to twist every widget. Obviously, that person's labor has a value under $5 an hour. If you pay them any more, then you lose money every hour. Notice how their needs isn't part of the equation.

The reason it’s structured with a lower wage plus tips is that it allows for the owner to afford to pay their employees if business is slow. If it’s busy the worker makes more bc of tips. They need to be compensated fairly though.

The hourly wage is so low in the United States that service workers rely on their tips. If they were to pay a decent hourly rate, then tipping wouldn’t be such a big issue. I also live in a country where we have no tipping culture and we pay a mostly decent hourly rate. The government has set standards so that there is a minimum wage/ hourly rate. Employers trying to pay less to their workers can get into big trouble if they try to abuse the system and their staff. 🙂
