I get that. It's our beliefs, and let us believe in what we believe. I believe it was Dr. Phil in one of the Trump campaigns who said something like if your neighbor decides to vote on the other side, love and respect them anyway. And I wholeheartedly believe that. It's America. The 1st amendment states freedom of speech, and people don't always remember, nor respect that unless it's in their own favor.

I took care of a woman with DID on a locked psych unit. She never made eye contact the entire time. Her voice and inflections changed depending on which personality was in control in that moment. Even her body language shifted in unnatural ways when the personalities fought to be the one “in control” of her voice. I know that not every DID person is the same, but that TikTok girl with the bird in her head seemed completely in control of holding her own while speaking to the camera 🤷‍♀️.

I went with a woman with "DID syndrome" - known as MPD back then - for two of the most hellish years of my life. She did NOT wear it as a badge. She didn't "identify" with her disorder. She never said "we" when referring to herself - she was whoever she was in that moment. I could never imagine her making demands on society as a member of a "protected class". She was a severely-wounded person who was trying to find a way to heal from horrific childhood traumas visited upon her by sick adults. I hung in there with her as long as I could. I had to pull back when the relationship proved to be increasingly life-threatening for me. We stayed in touch for a time, and she eventually "integrated" into a much-happier person.

@@AsclepiusHoe To be clear, I believe that DID/MPD in her case began as a defense against the traumas being visited upon her. It was a coping mechanism that didn't serve her well later in life, when she was an adult with distance between her and her abusers and could defend herself. It was a "result" in a sense, since sans abuse, she wouldn't have needed to develop this novel coping mechanism. But there are a variety of coping mechanisms, so it wasn't the only "result" possible. I'm glad her life is better, too.

She has a bunch of different personalities that were created to protect her conscious from the pain and memories of each horrible instance of trauma she experienced. Yeah, I remember discussing this in AP Psych. DID is exceedingly complex and rare even by the standards of the mental disorders. It is also one whose prevalence mysteriously increases by orders of magnitude in populations that are aware of its existence, almost like it’s a fad. DID cases that seem too textbook perfect are regarded as people imitating the disorder (consciously or not) rather than truly suffering from it.

THANK YOU BRETT, I get so frustrated when people say "I have DID" and as a psyche student, so many people don't know how rare the disorder is. It's also something someone doesn't realize for themselves, you literally have to have therapeutic intervention for you to be diagnosed and are immediately started on LONG TERM treatment to join the alters together into one identity because DID is a very intelligent way of the brains use of 'safety mechanisms' to shelter the host from it's abuse/trauma. Also the trauma MUST include psychological, psychical, and sexual abuse with no exceptions. Idk about you but trying to promote your abuse and SA as "something I live with" is my immediate sign, its Bullsh*t! I am so happy she educated herself on this and honestly I would love for her to do a whole video on people in this new woke generation using psychological disorders as a "pass" in life the same way people play the race card. Not only will it educate people further but they honestly need to be called out for being the reason mental disorder stigma exists, because a bunch of insecure teens found comfort in the attention of playing fictitious disorders just to lash out and falsely attach stigma to the disorders, and you wonder why people avoid you. Meanwhile those who actually need the help, are deprived and isolated by society instead of receiving the care they need because we see them as the tiktok wannabe mentally ill kids online! (thank you for reading all of this, have a wonderful day!)

I have a story about DID self-diagnosis. Long story short: I researched DID thoroughly before self-diagnosing myself, and I was still wrong. (And dumb, because I should've known better about the self-diagnosing thing) Basically, when I was 13-15, a bout of major depression coincided with a raging obsession with psychology and knowing the ins and outs of ALL the mental and neurological disorders I could think of. (Which was how I found out I was depressed a few years before, and that it had advanced to major depression a couple months before my parents took notice.) Anyway, one of the many things I did rather obsessively when in a particularly low mood was research psychology to try and figure out how I could "fix" myself, and I often went down tangents because, y'know, psychology was one of my obsessions, an area of extreme interest. (More correctly, it was one of my autistic "special interests", but I didn't know that yet.) One of the many "waiting-to-be-confirmed-by-a-competent-authority-or-disproven diagnosis" paths I went down while researching why my social tendencies had always been so weird and why I felt like I was going insane was "Could I have DID?" At first, I was 99% convinced that was what was wrong with me. (I held out a little because, as you say, it is so impossibly rare, but I was like, "What else could it be???") Guess what? It wasn't that. Turns out, I was autistic and my parents knew since I was little, they just never told me. (That covered most of the bases....) Then I found out about this thing called "psychotic depression", and that basically covered the rest of the bases. (I'd also, in the past, wondered about schizophrenia and an assortment of other things, but since all my symptoms coincided with the worst stages of my depression, psychotic depression fit like a glove. Important note: I have blood relatives with such disorders, so it was not out-of-the-question that I could develop them as I grew older.

These details show their true character, I guess. It's a facade she built up to gain attention on the internet. There's nothing else in her life I gues, so she spends most of it online and if someone attacks her online persona, she defends it viciously. I mean, some of these peeps get mental breakdowns if their Twitter, etc gets suspended. That's quite a sign of their mental illness regarding internet and virtual reality addiction, or so. She consumed so much Twitter that she now thinks of herself as a bird. Someone needs to plug out her internet connection.

The disorder with multiple people in your head was actually proven to be false, if not extremely rare. There was one famous case from a girl named Sibyl and it turned out, decades later, she admitted that her disorder didn't exist. I wasn't aware of this until recently and she had came out about this before I was actually forced to learn about it in a health class and actually watched a movie on her life. She went through a lot of trauma, I won't deny that. Her mother had some sort of psychosis herself and tortured her daughter for so long from a young age, and it did impact her. Just probably not to create around 15~ people in her head. The interesting thing is that Sibyl and her family were Jewish and, apparently, I learned that the Jewish people (at least at the time), looked down upon seeing professionals that could've helped her mother, like the one she went to see for her "multiple personality disorder." This lady, the one with the green hair, just infuriates me. Not just as a conservative but as someone who is a writer and cares a lot about grammar and saying things correctly. Hearing her say "eir" instead of any of the three real types of pronouns just boils something petty and raw in me that makes me want to correct her so badly. The last two made me chuckle. The last one is relatable. I concur with that person's life choices.

We still can't agree on the mental health world of it really exists but we do know there wouldn't be a bird alter and you work to reconcile the different identities into the main personality. Typically the alters take on different aspects of a singular personality trait that serves the individual.
@wordsmith6154
@wordsmith6154 Жыл бұрын
@@terseandtiny1746 True. In versions I've heard of, regardless of if they're real or not, even in older studies, they've never been a different living creature. Different ages and genders, yeah, but never a whole different animal. I've never heard of a study of MPD where one of a patient's "personalities" is an animal like a dog or a cat. To prove your point, even if it wasn't true, Sybil's "personalities" were truly different personalities. One showed her kindness, another her innocence, another her depression/self-loathing, so on and so forth. I've felt all those in my life time as myself as they are emotions and parts of the human personality. "Bird" is not part of the human personality.

There is a book called "Sybil Exposed," by Debbie Nathan, that goes into the whole sham. My impression was that "Sybil" herself was a sick woman that her doctor, as well as an author, took advantage of to make money.
@wordsmith6154
@wordsmith6154 Жыл бұрын
@@Person117a Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that's true. When watching the movie in 9th grade, I couldn't help but feel that it was the doctor character that seemed more like the front-lining main character than the one the movie was named after. Examining it as an adult, it felt as if it was more about the doctor helping Sybil than it was Sybil finding closure for why she felt the way that she did. It's probably more probable that she had a form of psychosis like her mother and not MPD.

It's just not at all how DID actually works. I have watched probably several dozen of these DID tiktoks, and I am yet to see a single one that falls within the range of even potentially real. What these people fail to understand is that "alters" are not completely separate personas, nor do they possess anything akin to internally constructed background stories. Even after years of intensive therapy, alters certainly do not emerge with the degree of clarity as these people try to make it seem - their portrayal makes zero sense, and I have a hard time believing that these people researched anything on the disorder aside from the misconceptions given from other people who are faking it for attention. I have a sibling who was trafficked and severely abused to a degree that most people can't even fathom, who actually has DID. She has spent many years in facilities, even under the care of some of the doctors who are considered to be the foremost authorities on the subject of DID. These people not only are faking DID for attention, they are very likely fabricating the extent of their so-called trauma background. It's sickening - they are playing a game, making fun of a very real and very heartbreaking issue. This stuff absolutely enrages me more than I can say.
