Coming from someone who just opened their own brewery with my wife, I gotta say, the sales part and figuring out what people like is a very fun and rewarding part of having the business. Granted, we’re small and unconventional operating a 1 bbl brewhouse. But it’s a blast getting to meet everyone and talk to them and figure out what they like. We’re releasing our first smoothie seltzer this weekend and we’re excited to see how the community reacts. In the end, whether it sells or not, we’ll be better off because we know what they like now. Yes the Brewing is fun and being able to be creative and create unique products is fun, but the sales part is too. Great video! I enjoyed watching it!!! Cheers!

Great video! Even moving from 5-10 gallon homebrew scale to 1-3 bbl is a huge jump!

When you transfer from boil kettle to fermenter do you do so. Is the racking port or dump port?

Glad you got to experience that, dude. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the ‘same but bigger’ comparison. Come by Prairie for a looksy if you’re ever in southeast Oklahoma.

Nice short comparison video! Will you be spending more time there learning the equipment differences?

They’re clear across the country but I definitely want to start collaborating with more breweries and learning more about the industry and the specific challenges you have to overcome to succeed

Dude, I just did a pro-am brewday yesterday too and felt the same way. The owners were homebrewers that went pro so some of the logic is still there from that but "the same but bigger" was definitely the theme of the day. It was fun seeing the things that are waaaay easier on the homebrew level (mostly just dealing with grain) while also seeing things that are a billion times easier (eg chilling). Like homebrewing, yeah there was a good amount of standing around watching water boil and still some "redneck engineering" going on. One of the more interesting differences I tried to consider the whole day (especially as someone whose day job is in the restaurant world) was just adding up costs between ingredients, utilities and labor. Real awesome stuff to observe and think about all day.

It really is pretty interesting to think about and in most cases there's plenty of margin, especially when you're dialed in. Can't wait to do it again!

@@HopsANDgnarly haha absolutely. I remember regularly bugging them during downtime to teach me more of the "boring stuff" which was really insightful

I'm a pro brewer and homebrewer here in Germany and I have to say that the two professions are still worlds apart from each other. I can see the comparison with the same but bigger but the technologies are quite different at the moment... One thing I've noticed is that the brewery is using tri-clamp which is rare in Germany (we use Rohrverschraubung für Lebensmittel und Chemie gemäß DIN 11851 if you want to Google it) The chemical products used in Homebrewing are not used in pro brewing because the companies who supply the breweries here are not interested in producing their chemicals for the open market. One big difference I've found was the difference in planning of production. I can come home and think about brewing a double triple dry hopped imperial something without thinking to much about if the market I sell to needs this kind of beer and if I can sell everything with a profit... This is a big hurdle for people going professional because they are not thinking about that at first. I'm looking forward to tomorrow for the whole brewday because I'm always interested in looking at different gear different countries use :) Have a nice day 🍻

Thanks man! It would be so fun to visit with an international brewery someday! I wonder why German breweries aren’t using tri-clamp. In the US even massive 100+ barrel breweries use tri-clamp systems. The sales side is what I was getting to at the end of the video. Definitely a huge difference that I’m glad I don’t have to contemplate. It’s great to dream something up and just go for it without thinking about the sales implications.
