I often get business-related questions about how / when to start your own business, how to turn a creative hobby into your job or how to grow a business.
In this video I share learnings from my own experience, which might be helpful for you too:
- What is your product and what's the story you want to tell?
- People are not "waiting for you", go find them!
- Find the "right level" of pressure (time pressure and financial pressure) for you
- How to know when to size up or down (things take time!)
- Nobody is good at everything: delegate!

Evelyn Silverknight I would start at a commumity college class to learn how to sew in depth. That or lots of online tutorials. Look at Angela Clayton for inspiration, she is a fantastic seamstress. Another idea is to find a tailor or seamstress or anyone good at sewing you would be willing to pay to sew for you

I have a small lip balm and lotion business on FB. It's local and I make it all from natural and organic ingredients. Just not enough people know about it, I think. It's Selah Beauty on FB facebook.com/selahbeauty/ My friends love it!...Editing to add: I forgot to mention that if anyone decides to look at the link and has suggestions, etc. I'm all ears. I don't have the budget to promote it, but I'm assuming that's why it's not selling. The products themselves are great quality. I haven't found a better lip balm and I am VERY picky about my lip balm! lol

Hi, thank you so much for making this video. it's exactly what i needed. i have a small bussiness in plussize clothing. while the creative part comes naturally for me,(sewing and developing patterns is a second nature for me) the business part is where my insecurities and fear of doing the wrong things and making the wrong decisions rears its ugly head. i just cant seem to get the right words and thoughts come out of my head and on to paper. i want to do everything myself. its so exhausting. i dont even have enough patience with myself and my mind keep on running and running until i had enough of it. and then nothing happens. sorry for the rant. anyway. i've been following your channel for a while now and you are my favorite youtuber :D Greetings from Belgium Merci pour le conseil, vous etes une personne magnifique et un source d'inspiration.

Hello/ Bonjour Justine , I am french like you but will post my comment(s) in English since your growing audience seems to be English speaking . Great video as usual , your videos are always delivered in a highly structured and informative manner ...yet friendly and straight to the point about fashion, trends , French ways etc...so well done ! I never / rarely comment on videos and i had to register and get a youtube profile just to leave you a comment and congratulate you :-) In fact i wanted to comment on the video you've made on the 5th of july about how to start a business , which is similar to the subject of your first video you've made when you started this channel , which purpose was to make a journal of your journey as a young designer launching her business ...and in between you seem to be adding so many advices on clothes, fashion and so much more ...There's something you do not mention in your video about how to start your business and "market it" ...for instance i was wondering how you've managed to turn this channel since your first video into such a success 175 000 abonnés , that's not a small number ! Félicitations...could you be kind enough to reflect perhaps on what / how you've managed that ? which video perhaps helped to bring you an audience in the jungle of all the youtubers talking about fashion and beauty etc...plus in your first video which introduced your channel you've explained and offered to share a sort of step by step journey / journal on you building your business and fashion line? which somewhat has turned into one of the most informative and well researched channel on fashion , clothes, trends etc...anyway CONGRATULATIONS / mes félicitations les plus sincères ...a bientôt et merci de partager avec nous d'une façon aussi claire et intelligente sur des sujets variés ...vous avez vraiment un style très personnel de présenter ces sujets ...and straight to the point ! Si je parviens à écrire et compléter tout ce que j' aimerais faire and "achieve" avec mon blog , je ne manquerais pas de mentioner votre chaine et certaines vidéos bien précises ..pourquoi refaire ce qui est déjà si bien fait ;-)

Hi Justine, thank you for sharing your knowledge in this area. I think it is so valuable to have role models in the creative business field. More than a role model really, you are serving as a mentor to many of us around the world. I think your advices are very helpful and to a point for all kinds of business starters. I founded my own small firm in the culture industry around three years ago. And even though I constantly read articles and stories on entrepreneurship, I still suffered a lot in the three years. Two things I didn't manage well was the pressure and expectations. I picked my sister to be my business partner but she is simply not the entrepreneur type. I didn't accept the reality until very recently. Through out the way, I found myself doing everything full-time, the creative, the sales, the marketing, and the production. And I allowed the pressure to sneak up on me gradually to a point I was eaten up by my anxiety and insomnia. With the help of meditation and adjustment of expectations, I now can sleep fine. But I am still trying to recover from my painful anxiety. Having said so, I don't know if I could have avoided it without going through it. I felt I read everything I could have and evaluated my situation carefully before and during the process, but it still had to take me to actually go through it to learn what works and what doesn't. Still, I think this video would be very helpful for anyone who wishes to start a business. What makes you great and me love your videos is that you are creative, intelligent, genuine, good-natured and business-savvy at the same time. A lot of times you don't get all these qualities in one person. Good going and keep posting!

Excellent advice, and I agree 100%! My husband and I started our own business 21 years ago, and it (and we!) are still going strong. Yes, there have been rough patches, but that happens in any industry/business, whether you're self-employed or no. Luckily for us, before we started our own business, I did the book work/accounting at a couple of different companies as part of my administrative duties in the jobs I had while I worked my way through college, so I can pretty much handle all our accounting. :-) When you start your own business, it's an opportunity to apply every single thing you've ever learned...and you have to be willing to continue to learn and adapt, as you point out.

Thank you thank you!!! I think one back up plan could be being a business consultant online. I think you are full of creative great ideas, very down to earth, and professional. One video idea, I am very curious how Parisians dress for different occasions, like date, going to a wedding, clubbing. I have heard people saying Europeans tend to dress more casual? Very curious. I was also watching your guys fashion types video and you were so humorous. Could you please do one for girls? Or there is one you already made somewhere?

Every time I see one of your videos I feel deeply frustrated by not being able to give more than one thumb up. Really, honestly, one is far from expressing how much I appreciate your videos. You must be a hell of a woman. You're young and yet you exude such a calm and serene confidence. You sound and look balanced, smart, level-headed with no-nonsense. And just to add more to the pile, the content and the way it's presented makes it fascinating for anyone, related to the subject or not. So please, for my peace of mind, could you do a video of your flaws? :-P

this video was very inspirational. i love the ring you wearing i am a creative person thats where my passion lies i live in South Africa Cape Town is my city of residence because we a developin country great place to be an entrepeneur. i was a beauty therapist became self employed was tough thenwas going well onto getting good but left it to go to UK for the life experiences and worked in a prestigious spa in Dubai came back yo my country and was out if love with beauty theraphy. thats the reason i see now why i left my beauty business in S A. started working or dabbling in making organic hair oils and face creams. i love bespoke things in life thats why i started watching you channel the tips was awesome bec i get my clothes made for me by a local seamstress i bought my own sewing machine to stitch my own p.j.s but my latest passion i see is Jewellery. i will immeduately focus on an exceptional piece like your ring in this video in 2016 i went to abroad and got more inspired to buy and sell online jewellery in my country i am plannning to start but feeling abit apprehensive taking that first step thank you for the inspiration.

could you make a video talking about your studies, your experience in marketing and maybe some recommendations of books/ material to learn about your areas of marketing?

Hi Justine, I love your videos! They're truly life-changing. With that said, I would like to give you a little tip: add more pictures of whatever you're talking about. I'm telling you this because I'm a visual learner (like lots of people on KZbin) and sometimes I find myself getting lost when you're describing something without an image.

Such good information . I think a lot of artists have a hard time combining art and commerce. That is where you can get tripped up and you need to market your product. I do think the free social media has made it easier for more of us to be known. So much different than years ago, where you had to pay for it all. We should all take advantage of the minimal or no cost of it. Thank you.

Hi Justine! New subscriber here, I binge watching pretty much all of your videos in the last 24h ahahaha I could be wrong, but you never really talk about shops where find good quality clothes. I saw your video about how to tell apart a cheap one from a good one, but if you have the time, could you indicate me a list of shops where quality is pretty much a must? thanks! 💕
