These are the things I wish I knew about selling art, before I became an artist. Many of these tips refer to selling art online and how to make a living as an artist. Of course these tips might not be for everyone, but this is the art advice I would give to myself as a beginner artist. These tips would definitely been helpful to me before I started selling my artwork. I really hope you guys enjoy the video!

my best tip is on pricing! when you price your art and are unsure on what you think is too cheap or expensive, ask a friend, family member, stranger/acquaintance and yourself how much you think the painting is worth then get the average!

I would suggest asking someone that doesn't have any relations to you, that way you can get a clear unbiased opinion - and make sure you ask a few people too just to average your results. Speaking from experience in a different medium, family members and friends tend to sugarcoat, unfortunately, even subconsciously.

I love these tips - I've been painting 20 years and I agree with all you're saying. My website is quiet too - although one thing I've noticed is that people regularly sign up for my mailing list - and that is one of the top ways to find new buyers, through your mailing list. I've always, from the very beginning of selling, collected emails (asking permission first) and kept a mailing list. I've sold lots that way over the years. I'd say right now I sell the most through Facebook and Etsy. And it was through Etsy that I just got a new licensing deal that will put my art on Target, Bed Bath & B, etc etc. It's a great place to get discovered. Just a little tip - a GREAT way to get your art videos in front of new people is to post your work and then share a video you made about the painting in the comments. That's how I was able to grow my KZbin channel. And I think artists really need to focus on growing their social media followings like you were saying. So understanding the algorithms is key for each different social media site. I admit, I still haven't conquered Instagram, but Facebook has been invaluable to sharing my art adventures with the world. It's really limitless. We are so lucky as artists to have the world at our fingertips! I wouldn't be an artist without the Internet.

The idea that you have to keep working hard on your art resonates. You can get better, it's not a natural talent, it's a skill. Just like no one wakes up one day to become an accountant (like I am) and perfectly succeeds with numbers, no one wakes up to become an artist and paint a Rembrandt. Since art is becoming a hobby for me (yay!), I can get better by working and practicing on it. No worries about having to be "a natural"!

hmm, charging more money for commission makes a lot of sense, now that you say it. I never did, I always charged the same amount like for the paintings I just did "for fun". This helped a lot, thank you, Katie. Great tips!

Three of your tips helped me: 1. Daily intensive effort of hard work pays off at some point, because success doesn't happen suddenly, you make it happen. 2. Don't paint to sell, paint what you like. 3. Don't charge too little for your art. I still have two major problems: 1. As I grow better, I see even more flaws in my paintings. This sends me right down into the rabbit hole of imposter syndrome. Also being a true perfectionist, which is far from being a positive trait, I always have the feeling I need to make my work better before I can release it. It always was like this with my writings - I used to be a professional freelance journalist and also wrote for personal gain, and I still do the very personal stuff. I always needed somebody to literally take away my work for release. This is the real problem of a true perfectionist, that one can't let go as the work *always* is perceived as being unfinished and not good enough. So now I have the same issues with my artwork. Is there a sort of trick to ignore real and also peceived flaws in your own artwork? 2. At the moment I do some illustrations and sell a few little pieces, mainly for decorative purposes in other people's homes. I still dint have a unique personal style and therefore don't consider myself as real artist. This leads to me asking only little money for my work and making lots of art for people in my social environment, and very often for free. I know that people won't perceive my artwork as valuable, if I don't do so. How can I trick myself into believing in me as artist and become my own cheerleader, as you said so beautifully. 😊 Or is there a practical way to find and embrace the unique personal style? I don't have a personal style yet and it never just came to me and people see me having several personal styles. I don't even have a favorite medium. I jump around between mediums when painting daily. I haven't tried oil yet, but surely will take some classes on oil painting. But other than that I am trying out whatever I can get my hands on. I always loved charcoal, learned watercolor about two years ago for therapeutic reasons (I have cPTSD, since the last assault on September 7th in 2011, I can't work as professional journalist anymore.) and I truly love watercolor, especially for illustrations. I paint with acrylics and love to discover and also come up with new techniques. I also love mixed media, it's pure freedom and limitless. I combine my painted and monoprinted art with handicrafts and also like to go down the antique, archeological road. Monoprintung really got me and I have a few special ideas that aren't anywhere to be found. Anyhow, my ex-partner told me recently, that he believes my variability and me concubine so very different mediums and techniques are my personal unique style. I dint know. It just feels like I am all over the place with too many focuses. When I plan a piece of art, I always also think about how it needs to be presented as a finished piece - lighting, surrounding colors, sometimes even music. Why can't I just see the painting and nothing else? It would be so much easier. 😢

I don't think I could ever do commissions work, I think it would just get so annoying trying to satisfy someone else's vision. I just want to feel free and do my own thing when I paint, and not turn it into labor.

I've done 3 commissions and it was hard. All 3 customers gave me really bad reference photos. One reference was a 70 year old wedding photo, it was terrible. Won't do it again.

I stopped doing commissions entirely after not getting paid for the last two. I'm now focusing on developing my style. I appreciate you mentioning the skill development. I cringe every time some one says "you're so talented". I know they mean well but I draw and paint everyday. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. I totally agree with point #1 I'm a Network Engineer, and I only spend 5-10 percent of my time painting, when I thought it's gonna be 80 percent painting and 20 percent admin. And another point you made was "you need to be your own cheerleader". So true 💯 especially in a critical society that consider art as something that's not of much use. The advice I liked the most was the reminder that nobody starts out a perfect artist. I always thought I had no talent because it didn’t just “happen.” My Mom and Grandmother are/were both fabulous artists. I never felt I could measure up so I didn’t try.

I come from a family of artists. Art, music, photography, writers, composers. I always felt out lol. I can draw what I see but not what i imagine. I can write beautifully but I can not express myself too well verbally. But painting is something I love to do. It is hard for me because as i said I can't get my images out. That's the thing that always frustrates me! The main thing I get told is that I'm so "talented" and while I do appreciate it, it's an ignorant (sorry everyone who says it trying to be nice!) thing to say. I've worked SO hard for well over a decade to get to where I am with my art and I will continue working hard.. talent doesn't take away the hard work! Ps. I love these types of videos from you :) My tip would be not to base yourself on how many followers you have. Counting those numbers isn't good for your mental health and it doesn't define you :)

The only possible tip I can add about being a professional artist is learn about taxes in the area you live by talking to local business organizations that support small business. 1 It a resource free most of the time about how to operate a business 2 Taxes come and you don’t want to get hit with a huge bill at the end of the year! Artistic You hit on everything the tip that resonates with me is the tip about filling the artistic need. Business is going to be up and down you got drawn into the world of art for a reason ( pun intended) don’t forget to feed that need or it will die and once that dies it’s not long for everything built on that desire to die too! Now get out there and create!

How do you get into art world? Do you need to go to art school?

@@wendydavenport9418 I didn`t. In my youth there even weren`t any art schools for children. The only way then was to teach yourself and that was an unsurmountable barrier for getting into a gallery. So I found other ways to show my work, started teaching and even founded a public gallery in our local evening school. That way I gradually got seen as an artist in the public eye and so slowly I built my own buyer clientele.

I couldn't pick out one tip as it was so inspiring to listen to you sharing when I'd had the same feelings and thoughts. I did a commission a year ago and haven't been able to pick a brush up since. Self belief I guess has to be the biggest thing and I love to paint and for me to sell my work is mainly to make space. Thank you Katie for your inspiration and great Tutorials.
