Puerto Ricans come from a main mix of Africans, Spains and Taínos(native tribes) So there is a big variety You can see blondes, redheads and brunettes. Black with dead hair, trigueño(lightskin, that is more taíno than black) with green eyes and white girls with afros. People around the world tend to think that Puerto Rico is mainly made of black people. I am fair skin with hazel eyes and brown hair. My mom is black with afro and my dad is white and blonde. There is a lot of that in Puerto Rico

Definitely not judgmental about Mexican culture. I am however, judgmental toward people who insist that there’s no difference. I think a lot of us are tired of the dismissals. When we correct them and tell them we are in fact Puerto Rican, their response is usually something along the lines of “meh, close enough” or “same difference”. Like, NO, we are two different cultures and it’s not only offensive to Puerto Ricans, it’s offensive to Mexicans. The fact that they’re uneducated on those differences is bad enough, but to be dismissive when we correct them is just unacceptable and offensive. Then they turn around and twist it around to try and make it seem like we’re offended to be perceived as Mexican, when that is not the case at all. We’re just tired of every Latino/Hispanic being perceived as Mexican because they’re too intellectually lazy to understand that these cultures are distinct from one another. Just my two cents!

Ariel Taverniti so? Being gay isn't something great. It is the same as any other thing, so instead of focusing on LGBT 🏳️🌈 focus on celebrities, music, etc. As you may see, Puerto Rico have a lot more of those than the Dominican Republic, and let's not even start with the numbers by capita. Y por último, focus on the history. We are one island that we don't have to share it with anybody else, we are one if not the whitest country in the Caribbean. While Dominicans? What caught me totally off guard when I was 23 years old was the very intense animosity that I encountered from a significant percentage of Mexicans at the JWs church in Chicago simply because I was Puerto Rican. I had not encountered that animosity based on cultural differences from the Anglo Americans I had met at church. I figured it was just the Chicago Mexicans, But then I came up against the same attitude from a significant number of Dominicans in New York City. Never had imagined that could be possible You see, I grew up being hated by Irish and Italians and had figured that all Latinos were all in the same boat in the USA. I was suddenly forced to conclude that I had been wrong.
@radrook75842 жыл бұрын
That relatedness might be true to a certain degree. But we do not all share the same social concerns and that prevents us from having the same cultural unity that African Americans have. For example, Puerto Ricans don't worry about borders for entry into the USA. Mexicans aren't living under communism as Cubans are. Other Latin Americans are not constantly concerned about the Falkland Islands, as Argentineans are.
@radrook75842 жыл бұрын
I guess there are definitely affinities based on sharing the same language, religion, and general history in this hemisphere. . However, not always does it pan out that way. For instance, Island Puerto Ricans don't identify culturally with New Yoricans although they both groups claim to be from the same place.
@amiquigonzales7917 Жыл бұрын
@@radrook7584 That's so bizarre ... In general Latin American usually like and greet each others, especially if you are in " extraña nación pues lo quiso el Destino". Being different, we have a lot, a lot in common, especially the most important of all: moral values (which even if you are not a Catholic, prevail). You must have had very bad luck. I lived in the UK and France for 4 years while a student and I couldn't be more grateful for the warmth, the caring, the affection my fellow Latin Americans showed to me as I was all alone, young and struggling with the languages as I did. REally, I wouldn't have survived without the family affection, which we all cherish, they shared with me. And, asyou say, all this in a religious context, within a Church, so so bizarre ..

To redirect the comments into the constructive conversation we had previously, I will like to as that some people point out that reggeaton came up from the city of Carolina first. In any case, the surge of salsa and reagueaton share many similarities, including themes discussed in songs as well as initial rejection as an underground music but transcending into "mainstream" or more popular music. One interesting contrast is the lead of the dance: while in salsa the male leads the dance, in reggeaton the female actually does. Whatever the rhythm, let's keep dancing and sharing the moves and love with all the nations on Earth. Lol
