She raised them from the 19-teens through WW2, and until she passed in the early 70’s when I was an infant. I would’ve given an organ to get it back. My kid made an art exhibition with real people's pictures in their frames that she's found over the years in our thrift stores here in México. They range from vintage 60s to early 2000s and go from small children to someone's grandma. It's a complete mystery for us how something as personal like your kid's pictures or a heirloom like your grandma's old picture end up being thrown away or donated. Some pictures have names and dates, but most don't. She called her exhibition '$30-50 mxn' because thats the price range for those picture frames, 30 to 50 mexican pesos, I call it "Los olvidados" or "The forgotten". And it's not just picture frames, we've seen books with gift dedications, full picture albums, custom mugs with old pictures printed on them, etc. The one that hurts my daughter the most is a drawing made in the 70s by someone's then 7 year old that was valuable enough to be custom framed but not valuable enough to be kept as a family heirloom of sorts. The one I value a lot is a custom drawing of someone's siamese cat by the artist GILPIN. Its a gorgeous piece of art.

My mother in law and my wife were in a thrift store some years ago and MIL passed on a gold bracelet that she thought was too ugly, but my wife wanted a closer look at it. Some instinct told her to buy it, and since it was in the junk jewelry basket, she only had to pay $3. Following that instinct, my wife took the bracelet to a reputable jeweler in town and they confirmed that it was a solid 24k gold bracelet and that just the recycle value was in the ballpark of $350, if it was made by a big name designer and could be confirmed, then it could easily have been worth 10x that. As soon as MIL heard about that, it suddenly became "a beautiful piece" that would "complement [her] other jewelry perfectly." My wife wasn't having it, but ended up having to sell it to her mom anyway to cover some money she borrowed later.

I need folks to know that families DO in fact donate or trash some of the most precious things. 2 years ago I called non emergency for a wellness check on my elderly neighbor and her dog. She was gone but I called in time to save her dog. Her kids live like 16 hours away and I never never saw them in the years of us living beside each other. Hell she barely talked about them. But they damn sure made it down in record time to go through her stuff and take only what they could put in their vehicles. When I say that poor woman’s 3 br house sat on the side of the road like trash that’s what I mean. I watched for almost a week as people dug through it. I was so happy when it was all finally taken… every time I look at her house I think of her and wonder what kind of person was she for her babies to do that. They didn’t even come over to talk. I went over there… no thank you… no words about a service… nothing… simply I could have anything I wanted 😢
