You can filter the charge location results by clicking on those lightning bolts so that it only shows the high-power DC fast chargers. I didn't buy my platinum to save the world, probably the furthest thing from my mind. 1sr reasonfor buying it, I've been an electrician all my life. Love new electrical gadgets. I installed my own 13 kw solar system. Have owned several Toyota Prius. Wanted an all electric but never bought one. Finally ford came out with all electric truck. I've owned GMC, Chevrolet, Dodge, & Ford trucks. My last 3 were F150. I traded in my 2014 F150 V8 & 2018 Prius which got the price down to about $50k. I put a down payment on a mannequin back in June 2022. So I had plenty of time to get to know the vehicle I'd own in 6 months. Test drove it every Monday for 2 hours, probably watched close to 100 youtube videos on it. After 4 months my dealer allowed me to take it for the weekends, then the final month, the owner of the dealership let me take it home for that entire month. So I was the one that put the majority of the 5k miles that were on it, when I took possession of it December 5th. 2nd reason I bought it was to rid myself of all the maintenance required on my ICE vehicles. I was also the mechanic that did all the work, that was required on them. 3rd reason as I mentioned I have solar that runs my home, with grid as backup and 11 kw generator as 2nd backup, now I have a 3rd backup, with a 10 awg drop cord I connect my truck bed receptical to my solar inverter/charger and charge my solar batteries while powering my home and everything in it, including my deep well pump & all the tools in my shop. It tows & hauls like my 2014 f150 did only much cheaper. I can drive approximately 100 miles for $5. I couldn't even drive my prius that far unless I could buy gas for $2,50/gal. I haven't seen those prices for many years. This has been a lengthy comment but wanted to express my true feelings about my lightning. One last key point. At the present this is not the best vehicle to buy for long distance traveling or towing. Not the trucks fault, that falls on the vehicle's charging infrastructure. Once there are as many charging stations as there are gas stations there won't be a range issue.

Seems like the charging locations could use a camera network you could pull up on your Ford display, showing status of the chargers, AND a live stream showing how many slots are currently in use. We were weighing a new plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, but the vehicle we were looking for is primarily planned to be used for long-distance road trips. With the charging issues these days, we just bought a standard, gas-burning Subaru Ascent. 25 MPG, but NO PROBLEMS getting it fueled up and on our way.

@Jetters Garage; there is something that you should mention about the charging locations... over time you will know where the best ones are located in your area. The problems you've talked about would be more of an inconvenience when going on long trips. The biggest "pro" for EVs is that you can charge at home so you never have to go "fill up" somewhere
@JettersGarage Жыл бұрын
This is true and what I do 90% of the time. The problem is that if you only charge at home and need to go out of the norm it can be a big inconvenience for me at least. Not trying to be a negative nelly but speaking the truth as I see it. Thank you for commenting.

@@somersetcountymd yes, that is a problem that will have to be solved in the future. EVs aren't for everyone at this point. That's why I don't get the really bad negative feedbacks. EVs and the power grid expansion is still in it's infancy.
@normang4 Жыл бұрын
@@yvongauthier4409 To assume that the EV charging problem will be resolved in the future, IMHO, is a pipe dream, with constant attacks (at least with current administration) on Fossil fuels, which are required to power the grid, on which charging relies, its not going to improve anytime soon. Not to mention the utter lack of grid improvement. This can also apply to ICE cars as they are making it harder and more expensive for gas production as well.... They are inter-connected. However, the battery problem is the biggest issue, they cost way to much, will never get cheaper because of the cost of gathering raw materials, and waste more of your life charging unless all you do is commute and nothing else from one charging station at work to the one you installed in your garage, if you have one, which many people don't. the list of cons for EV's really out-weighs any benefits, which they never really had.. They've always cost to much and will not get any cheaper... I can buy a lot of gas for the cost difference from most any EV to a reasonably priced ICE car.

Very well balanced video about your situation with ev's. I live in Michigan which isn't as ev fast charging friendly as some other states especially if you live away from the city type areas. I have a chevy bolt and charge at home. Never need to charge at fast chargers. But I use the bolt for 95 or more percent of my driving. I have solar to and it's a lot easier to charge the bolt. My point is that ev's work awesome in certain situations right now so get one if it is in that parameter. Or wait til the parameters change. There are a lot of people in many different states that can use ev's to do most of their day in and day out driving and charge exclusively at home. Also they have more than one vehicle and can road trip or tow and haul with a gas vehicle and still benefit greatly.

I was somewhat surprised to see that J-1772 at an Electrify America, because most EA locations don't have one. But since no PHEV can charge at a CCS1 fast charger, the J-1772 you dismissed, is what PHEV drivers need to use in order to keep driving electric, rather than shifting back to using gas. And with that lone CHAdeMO off-line, as they often are at EA locations, the J-1772 could become a Leaf drivers lifeline. Also some of us like to do something else, rather than just staying with the car while we charge, so my wife would love having a charger right buy a Target Store. A J-1772 with its slower charge rate, and lower price point per minute is well suited to that sort of opportunity charging.
@phil4986 Жыл бұрын
Great video. First off, your F150 intro should be used by Ford because it really highlights the various features of the truck. Secondly, the apps need to get way better at showing the status of every charging unit real time. The entire charging process is digitally recorded real time so it would take nothing to tell you there are three chargers, two are not working at all and the third is occupied by a vehicle at 63% and that will require another hour to complete the charge. It is absolutely horse 'stuff' that the charging apps just give a ...there it is... location report. The digital information should be so complete as to prevent you from making fifteen stupid trips to fifteen places that have malfunctioning or occupied chargers. Thirdly, people don't have any right to say you are a whiner. The solar panels are at least thirty grand. I am guessing the Tesla walls were at least thirty grand and the truck is one hundred grand. The charger installation was probably another three grand. So that's $163,000 you spent before the Ford ever made a mile. (I know my numbers are probably hilariously low) A used ICE truck is less than ten to twenty grand, and it can outrange your truck forever towing anything. I know the solar panels and especially the Tesla battery walls let you reuse stored power but that's beyond a majority of Americans right now. Please keep updating us on your electric charging challenge experiences. The truth is always appreciated. I just hope your Ford is reliable for you. There have been some issues with batteries dying in new Ford Electric F150's recently. Covered by warranty though obviously.

I guess those are synthetic terra cotta tiles on your roof but man, what a wild roof to put solar panels on. having solar panels on a vehicle would take weeks to charge making it inefficient and adding more cost. EVs already have "alternators" on each wheel and are used when braking or going downhill. @Paul-cj1wb Жыл бұрын
Great to hear a Tesla owner welcoming the opening of the supercharger network, although that'll only be in locations where they are not super busy. Most Tesla fans think they'll ALL be opened up. That's far from the case. The only reason Elon is doing it to get part of the infrastructure bill money. But anything helps, especially with all the advanced experience Tesla has. Eventually, this will be a major money maker for Tesla, especially when they start adding solar (by that I mean entire massive parking lots covered in them -- think Walmart supercenters parking lot size or larger) and multi-megawatts of battery storage capacity where they don't have to buy electricity but will be actually making it for free. That's 100% free profit.

About saving the world by driving an EV - well... the Ford Lightning’s battery weighs in at 1,800 pounds and bigger batteries require a lot of critical minerals, take a lot more electricity to power, and the electric grid still relies heavily on fossil fuels. The critics of electric vehicles are not wrong, but only because of the current market trends of EV's with bigger, and bigger vehicles with longer and longer range - not because it is an inherently bad technology. Mining is bad, but it's not any worse than drilling for oil. However, gigantic EV's with huge range hordes critical minerals that came with real environmental costs to gain access to and there is an intersection in that analysis where you aren't doing the environmentally right thing anymore when you drive such an EV. For instance, I have read that even a Model Y charged on a legacy power grid is only as clean as the most efficient ICE vehicle. Another article made a convincing argument that we could reduce far more carbon if everyone drove hybrids and plug-in hybrids instead because of 4 compounding reasons 1. Even though the majority of daily commutes are under 40 miles round trip, 2. most people hesitate to buy ev's because of range anxiety and the inconvenience of finding and waiting for a charger, but 3. you could make 10 plugin hybrids or 60+ regular hybrids with the same amount of minerals that it takes to make the battery pack of one Ford Lightning, so 4. there would be less overall fuel emissions if we as a society focused on shifting everyone to hybrids rather than huge, long-range EV's. I am not a critic of EV's, I own a Chevy Bolt, and I'm not even saying that nobody needs something like a Ford Lightning - it's just a very, very small segment of truly environmentally-conscious use cases (for instance, contractors or anyone who *really* needs the load and tow capacity but will only drive it locally and charge at home/site >90% of the time), although nobody really needs a Hummer EV - those are gross for the environment. I drive my Bolt around town and take my Ford Maverick Hybrid on longer trips. Yes, hybrids do not get as good mpg on the highway as they do in town but it's a small truck that fits my family, luggage, and can even tow a bass boat. I really wanted Ford to come out with a plug-in Maverick though...

If you use your truck to tow, the range sucks too. For a commuting vehicle, great. For towing a trailer, nope. More bad news on Natural Gas. Natural gas to electricity? 40% efficiency. Coal to electricity? 30% efficiency. So depending where you live, you could still be generating a lot of carbon based emissions.

Realistically EV trucks are not usable right now for towing anything long distance. My opinion 10 to 20 years away. Gas stations are on every corner to fill up in less than five minutes. Battery technology is not ready for everyone to change over to EV yet.

EVs and EV ownership aren't perfect. It's still early days and there are bleeding edge growing pains to deal with. There are plenty of frustrating situations that should have been handled better and a severe lack of charging options here in the Midwest. Really no need to misrepresent that Level 2 charging is slow, that Ford can't navigate to DC fast chargers, or that you can't charge at a cherry-picked Level 2 charger in an apartment complex while towing?? That's not what those chargers are for so why complain that they can't do that. Sets a bad tone for the channel and lessens the veracity of your legitimate points. Much more useful if you point out how Ford shows stations sorted by charging speed, that at the 25 mph charging provided by Level 2 chargers your standard range pack could charge from 0-100% overnight, and that the apartment complex should provide more chargers for residents.
@JettersGarage Жыл бұрын
These are real life situations. The two Charging stations I chose were very close to the Tesla super charger station. @@JettersGarage Before Tesla introduced the Super Doc, Tesla superchargers were no use for drivers of cars with CCS like the F-150, so it was better to filter them out. From other video's I've seen, the Tesla Super Doc stations won't be as much use for F-150 drivers, because the power cable is just a little to short to work well. The apartment station looked like it was for residents and visitors rather than for road trippers passing through, filtering out level 2 chargers would solve that, so it was a poor example, but you are right that even many Level 3 fast charger locations are not well set up for Vehicles that are towing. I don't know of any app that filters for pull through locations yet. But apps like Plugshare, with user pictures and comments, or looking at the location on Google maps, can give you some heads up on a pre-planned route.

At this point my fuel savings is over $10,000, from using my gas powered Toyota Corolla, which died at 225,000 miles, forcing me to buy the Bolt. No regrets at all. The fuel savings greatly subsidizes the cost of the car. No real issues when supercharging on a trip yet, but the supercharging infrastructure need to be substantially increased to handle the inevitable increase of EV owners. Before you buy an EV, make sure you have a garage with a NEMA 14-50 240 volt outlet. You really have to charge at home in order to realize the savings.

Folks, among all environmental issues, climate change is unique and uniquely collective. Like, we're talking collective at a level unheard of in human history. Your entire state could eliminate all of its carbon and it would make no difference wrt climate change. This is not to say, don't care about climate change. But, this idea that your individual contributions, or lack thereof (i.e., your "carbon footprint"), is "doing your part" is just incoherent. Buy or don't buy an EV for the same reasons you'd buy or not buy anything. But don't buy it to "save the planet" or reduce your carbon footprint. If you're an upper middle class commuter to a major city and that's about the extent of your driving, EV's seem to make some sense. Outside of that, the sense in buying them starts to drop off a cliff. The lightning in particular seems to be quite the fail, and the sales are reflecting it.

Way too much money, way too much drama, way too ridiculous for any practical matter. It is no wonder that you live in San Diego. If it came down to dollars and cents, what did the solar panels cost (before tax subsidies), and what did the two Tesla Power Walls cost? A 9 kw roof panel solar system: Congratulations! At 100% output (which would be for approximately 3 1/2 hours a day in San Diego, UNLESS it is cloudy or rainy, you are producing enough electrical energy to run SIX hand held hair dryers! Not for the entire day, just for the 3 1/2 hours that your panels are actually putting out the rated full 9kw. So, let's hear how many dollars you spent today for the roof top solar, the powerwall storage (x2) and your wonderful Ford ProCharger, plus the electrician bill to wire this all together. Now we're really talking about the upfront cost vs. the "savings" over each future "fillup". No one wants to have this discussion, with this disclosure. And you're still screwing around with trying to time your charging with the midnight to 5am lower electrical cost. Spoiler: Why is the cost of electricity so high in Southern California/San Diego County???? RENEWABLE ENERGY MANDATES! Rube Goldberg would be proud!

ELECTRIC CARS ARE NOT ACTUALLY ECO FRIENDLY OR GREEN JUST BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EMIT AT THE TAIL PIPE! The gas tax that is paid at the pump will be put at the charging stations you going solar will do nothing. The materials for the batteries are not renewable. Even recycling them does not work. The government will end up subsidizing it and once the government stops paying for the recycle process. That then means in simple terms it is not making money for the company meaning they then stop the recycle process. EV have bought the lies they have been fed that without buying this EV.
