Another good thing to add is that if you are worried about cost, buying used equipment and supplies is definitely cheaper. Any stained glass artist knows that taking care of their equipment is a must. You don't really have to worry about buying used equipment for stained glass like you would for other things. It is also a great way to see if stained glass is for you without burning a hole in your pocket. You can find some really great deals on stained glass supplies from people who are looking to get rid of their stuff.

I took a 5 night adult school course many years ago. I think I paid about $70 for the initial supplies. As I began my first project, I had trouble with the pieces being cut properly. My husband, who was a mold maker and engineer told me if I was serious, I had to invest in professional, quality tools. He took me to a stain glass shop and bought me a top of the line glass cutter. From that point, the work was considerably easier. My first project was a small window frame of a hummingbird and flowers. The teacher told me not to bother cutting glass for the hummingbird's eye. "Just put a dab of solder in that spot", she said. When my project was finished, she looked at it, and seeing I had cut a tiny piece of glass for the eye, she said, "You brat. You did it anyway." She smiled and congratulated me on my finished piece. It was a fun hobby to take up. I immediately took another short course at the glass shop near my home.

I'm brand new to stained glass and starting out from scratch. I've been watching a ton a tutorials and I'm at the point I want to start getting my kit together. Most of the info I'm finding regarding types or brands of soldering irons is geared towards soldering for electronics and not stained glass. I was wondering, when you do your equipment video if you could get specific about brands and features the soldering iron and other tools need to have for stained glass specifically? Thanks for your vids!!

I’m taking my second stained glass class tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it as I had always wanted to try it and was definitely hooked after the first class. Loved it so much I booked a private class for my sister and me. I know there’s a place in town that rents out the glass grinder. I’m thinking about doing that before I consider buying my own. The only thing holding me back right now is I’m already into quite a bit of expensive crafts/hobbies. My brain keeps going back and forth. 🤷🏽♀️

Do put the piece together as a whole and then just run the flux over the copper or do you have to do both side of the piece with the flux ??
@StainedGlassDIY8 ай бұрын
Both sides need flux and solder to complete the project. And edges of the glass too.

Discard if they are too small to keep. You can also keep them in a container and use or sell for frit or fusing projects.

If I live in a complex with others and share a wall with a neighbor, would the loudness of the grinding machine be too much you think? Do you need a secluded space to make noise or is it not too bad?

I used mine during the day and minimally at night. If it's a bigger session then they will probably get annoyed like hearing a blender run for too long.

Do you ever use foil or lead scissors to cut your patterns. I’ve gotten back into glass the last couple years as a hobby and am doing mostly foil work like you but I’m getting into lead came for large pieces, but I’m not sure whether I should use the scissors
@StainedGlassDIY5 жыл бұрын
I haven't actually but I just make sure to cut my glass slightly smaller if fitting becomes an issue. I would imagine you would have to pay more attention with a more complicated piece.
