One thing I loved about living in Italy was the trains. They were always on time and left on time, plus you can get to most places by train plus the tickets are cheap. Anyone can easily do a train trip around Italy if you want to visit as many Italian cities as possible.

On time??? In italy?? Are you sure? 😂

You should go and see his tomb in Ravenna (which is a far bit away from Florence, unfortunately). As he died an exile in their city the people from there refused to ever get his body back to Florence, to respect his wishes. So, now, every year, on the day of his death, the city of Florence sends a year-long supply of olive oil to burn on a lamp, that's been lit non stop on his tomb for more than 3 centuries. Not gonna lie, it was an emotional experience for me.

If you're 25 or younger and want to visit the art museums but don't want to spend a lot of money go to Palazzo Pitti instead of the Uffizi. When I lived there it cost 3€ to visit the museum/palazzo AND the gardens. You'll get to see a couple Raffaello paintings among many other beautiful renaissance pieces that cover every single wall plus you'll also get to see the palazzo itself, so the furniture and decoration and fun stuff like what a bathroom looked like back then! And the gardens are pretty nice if you want a break from the busy streets of downtown Florence. Even if you're older than 25 it's way more affordable and to me it was a better and more immersive experience than the Uffizi :)

Visited Florence as a day trip many years ago during a coach tour around Italy with my now late Nan. It may have been Tuscany where we visited a vineyard. I had just finished my first sample wine when without saying a word she swapped my empty glass with her untouched one. She did not want to drink but felt it was rude to refuse the differing wine samples. Am not tea total but still a lightweight. My Nan had to help steady me on the way back to the coach as the path was both cobbled and steep. Luckily wasn't hungover but slept deeply until the next stop

It is highly overrated, I avoid them whenever possible, just so uncomfortable. and you'll get there if you want, but don't let that define you. just a little PSA: You are a museum person, you just need to figure out how & what you like to explore. museums are for everybody, and there's almost always something for everyone. you don't have to look at everything in order. you can wander around aimlessly, just enjoying the beauty. you can ignore exhibits and look at the building itself. you can play a silly game counting ding dongs or headlights in classical art. just don't be rude, mean, or aggressively loud, and we love to see you. if a staff person is snooty or rude to you, they are a bad museum professional. we want to share our treasures and their meaning with you, please come see us, where ever you travel. ask loads of questions, most of us just want you to find what you're passionate about. some people talk to the desk person while their families tour, just to tell or hear stories. we love it.

My husband and I don't drink alcohol, and I'm nervous about this for our upcoming trip. I found Parisians to be more polite about it in the past than Germans (opposite of what I expected), but how are non-drinkers treated in Italy? Should I expect this to be an issue? Any good way of dealing with it? We just try to be as polite as possible. In America we over -tip since our bill is less, but that's not a thing in Europe.

He died, last year, before we ever got to go. I have no idea how to go alone. I could travel for work but my days were planned. Where would you go, what would you do, if you traveled to Florence for the first time? Sounds silly and I understand that I am a silly old lady. But I would like to see and visit one of the oldest and most beautiful countries in the world.
