The only time I ever talked to a chef at a restaurant was when I had this amazing steak and the mashed potatoes were perfect. The veggies were awesome, as well. I asked the waitress to please let the chef know that the food is beyond amazing and a perfect way to end my evening. He came out and thanked me. It was pretty awesome. This was at 3-Forks in TX.

a thank you for the Chef and the kitchen crew is always appreciated. and while of course each and every guest will be taken good care of, some guests we take care a little bit more, like THESE gusts. after all also Cooks and servers and Chefs are just humans. even after 50 years of hospitality industry (me...) a please and thank you will go a long way. and if it is accompanied by a bottle of beer or a non alcoholic drink, even better. Whenever we eat out at any restaurant where the food is absolutely the best, I sometimes tell the server, "You must know that the food here isn't very good". . . 90% of the servers immediately get a worried or very concerned look on their face. . .Then I say, "And do you know why it's not 'very good'? . . . . . . .. It's because it's excellent!" 10% of servers are catching on & when I say " And you do you know why. . ." They say " Because it's great or superb or the best in town etc. . ."

Lol. This reminds me of the time I was in a Chinese restaurant and a guy came in wanting to place a takeout order and got upset. He asked for plain white rice with butter on it. The lady told him, "We don't have butta! This is Chinese restaurant!" He said, "Every restaurant has butter!' She said, "No! not Chinese!" He stomped out in a huff. So clueless!

The chinese didnt have cows or goats until international trade iirc, so their food culture had no reason to develop recipes that call for butter. @@chrishubbard64

Even IF they had it, he may not like it. Practically everyone has a fav recipe, often the one mom or grandma used. It varies quite a bit as to how it's seasoned, topping (bacon slices, ketchup, BBQ sauce), brown gravy or not. The list goes on. Now I NEED to have meatloaf! You fiends!

Come to think of it, meatloaf is rare to see on the menu of any restaurants. Though I do remember a family diner that had it on the menu, and they even made it without onions if you asked them too. It was well done, not dry, it had a rich gravy/brown sauce, lots of small potatoes and fresh vegetables on the side. It was really nice.

I think meatloaf is really a home kind of food. Like pretty much every family knows how to make it. Which is not to say restaurants can't do it, but more the family Mom & Pop kind of diner.

Remember to use a USA recipe, not one from anywhere else. Ones from the UK and its affiliates are vastly different. I'd recommend a recipe from the Midwest of the USA.

In 2015 i was in a restaurant. They made meatballs from just meat. I told the waiter and he sent the cook to me. I explained to the cook how to make a meatball and wrote it out for him. He was mexican and just hired. He thanked me for giving him the recipie.

I don’t even like meatloaf, but i learned how to make it with a recipe on the stovetop Chicken stuffing mix. It was delicious and my husband even said it was the best meatloaf he ever had. The BBq sauce made the dish.

I once asked the chef to come out and gave him the tip and stiffed the waitress who had only come and taken our order and then and stood in full view of the dinning room on their phone and made the other waitstaff server us. I offered to tip the other waitstaff and they said the owner wouldn't let them take it which is why I tipped the chef instead.

I have an idea for a video: "pranks the kitchen plays on the waiters" Back when I was a waiter at Outback Steakhouse, the kitchen did things like made fake sundaes, that were scoops of shortening instead of ice cream, or they're make pieces of the prime rib gristle look like coconut shrimp.
