Your quote about "desperation is the downfall of success" reminds me of something Arnold Schwazzenegger said about when he was buying properties before he became an actor. He said that he quickly learned the "he who wants it the most losses" in negotiations. Even if you do really need it - learn to negotiate like you don't.
