The любитель is interesting, because, not many people know, the word amateur also stems from "amar" which means to love and thus means a person doing something out of love/likeness instead being a professional. So the russian word works the same way. Cool :)

Мой родной язык Русский, но изучаю Английский язык. Мне так нравится Ваша харизма, то как Вы преподносите информацию. Мне очень нравится как Вы сначала говорите предложение на русском, а потом это же предложение на Английском, почему то так у меня больше запоминаются слова и фразы. Thank you so much!

There's also a negative usage of любить to mean "to not like it when something happens": он не любит, когда его критикуют/перебивают/etc. = he doesn't like to be criticized, he hates being interrupted, etc.

Hello, I have a question, non-related to language learning. Is it okay and safe to make a VK account for someone living in an EU country, regarding the current, very unfortunate situation, with this buttload of sanctions. I would like to follow some really good musicians there and I guess that here are at least one person who can answer me😃

СЕК (sec) - это сокращение слова "секунда". данное сокращение чаще всего употребляется в смысле "через секунду (а точнее, очень короткий промежуток времени) я освобожусь и смогу сделать то, что ты попросил" на английском это было бы скорее всего "one moment please" или "give me a second"

This is very interesting, because in the Croatian language, everything is slightly shifted, so to speak. Ljubiti/poljubiti in Croatian means To kiss we also have word Cjelovati for To kiss as in Russian but it is more literary word. For To fall in love we say Zaljubiti/Zaljubiti se and for stop being in love we say Odljubiti se. We also say Ljubav for Love! Also Ljubavnik/Ljubavnica exactly the same meaning as in Russian. "Među nama je ljubav" we have a lots of names with Ljubav ,male and female, Ljuba,Ljubo,Ljubomir,Ljubica,Ljubivoj and so on....We also say Ljubavni roman, ljubimac for favorit and we also have word Obilno/Obilni with exactly the same meaning as in Russian. So we can actually see how similar Russian is to Croatian!

Yes. Americans will say "I love chocolate!" or "I love that TV show!" Russians tend to reserve the word love for more serious things and not so casually as we declare our love for practically everything when we really mean we like it.
@Aeduo
@Aeduo Ай бұрын
I'm American and I don't tend to use it that way. It just comes off pretty superfluous in most uses, but yeah it's certainly some difference in the language for many.

I am learning this. Fedor's video on the subject is great from a Russian perspective. I live in southern Michigan and the only native Russian speaker here is the Google Girl in Google Translate! I need to find me a native speaker in real life!
@coldhandjacinth9069
@coldhandjacinth9069 Ай бұрын
Yup...most Americans and poorly instructed English students have lost understanding of what love should consist of before they utilize that verb. When it comes to foods, crave, desire or appreciate is appropriate. When it comes to things, 'love' should never be used to describe emotions toward a trinket, object or belonging.. I suppose I am not part of your 'we' group when is comes to misuse of the term 'love'. There is a reason that.love = 0 in tennis before ball and racket offenses begin.

Duolingo has been translating this word as "to like" in some exercises. I'm guessing it's wrong???
@Bread992
@Bread992 Ай бұрын
Not neccessarily. In russian you can say for example Я *люблю* гулять по вечерам. I *love* going for a stroll in the evenings. And you can translate it both ways, as "love" and as "like". "Люблю" just signifies that you like it a lot. Not much is lost in such a traslation :)
