Being from Ohio where I had to drive a lot in the snow "when I wore a younger man's clothes", I drove cars with and without winter tires. Somehow I survived but I think it was more due to luck than anything else :)

I think a lot of people, especially, younger people, feel that the reaction rate and skill are good enough. We may never need the full potential of the winter tires, but it's better to have them then not. It's like a good insurance policy, but one that protects you every day.
