Did Ram V Get DC Comics The New Gods Right This Time?

This is everything I wanted in a New Gods book. A small bit of pretentiousness in the beginning to make it feel grandiose, killer art, great characterization, and a simple, yet engaging plot. Please let this run stay at this level of quality, and let it cook for a few years!

I find it odd that people sleep on Ram v. Say what you will but at least the dude swings for the fences and give us something we didn’t ask for but something that we NEED to see. What’s great about this new gods so far is it is familiar but he’s taking influences outside of Kirby to do something wild and interesting. I’ll always check out Ram v. His one hand/six fingers collab with Dan waters was fantastic with the weirdest twist I didn’t see coming.

I like that, after what happened in the DC All In Special, Highfather told Orion to find the mysterious child on Earth and kill him, resulting in Orion to tell Scott (who just had a daughter named Olivia with Barda, which is nice) to make sure that he’ll find the child before he does because he knows that Scott can save the child from himself. Overall, this comic is good and off to a great start.

Everything I know about the New Gods comes from Justice League Unlimited. I have a very basic knowledge of them and even I loved this comic.

@@ComicsForLife2023 No need to be a dick. Yes, I did love it. It was a comic I expected nothing from and ended up being blown away by. Great art, great writing, and a very interesting set up. You're allowed to not like it, but guess what, I'm allowed to like it. It's one of the stronger single issues I've read this year. In the future maybe you should try " hey I'm glad you liked it, glad to have a new fan of the new gods on board. May I suggest checking out the Walt Simonson run from back in the 90's if you enjoyed this". See how much more pleasant that sounds? Now go jump in a frozen lake asshole.

Honestly, if you want to start with a new gods series, I highly recommend picking up Jack Kirbys' "Fourth World Omnibus" and then John Byrnes "Fourth World Omnibus" followed by Walt Simonsons "Orion".

Besides some of the try-hard narrative and context errors suggesting no editorial oversight, it’s a good start. If you go in without knowing the New Gods Foundation established by Jack Kirby or suspending what you know about it, it has some good scenes with a good set up. I really enjoy the artist’s work so I hope we get some cool action worthy of his time and talents.

I agree that this issue was very good. I like the art, and I think V captured the voices of the characters well. New Gods iis a concept I've been find of for decades, but nobody's done anything worth .mentioning with them since Walt Somonson's run on Orion. I read the scene with Lightray and High Father differently. To me, it seemed that High Father wanted to spare Lightray from a task he knew was going to be horrible. If you want a baby murdered, Lightray is not your guy. First rule of command: never give an order that won't be obeyed. Orion is the trashman. Every dirty job gets thrown his way. I did enjoy Orion's bit of malicious compliance, and it set up a situation that can really showcase what Orion and Mister Miracle can do. Really hoping for a return to form for Scott. Great review. Yeah, Ram V comics can be hit or miss, sometimes he drags things out and can be overly fluffed, but at least he is a real writer who puts thought into his work and, get this, he actually reads (a lot), has unique, real world experiences, and even does research. Rare Flavours, The Vigil, and Dawnrunner were all pretty good. I picked up The New Gods, which i know nothing about, but am looking forward to seeing unfold.

It was a very good first issue. Paints the New Gods in the way they should be. I am not a huge fan, but I could get behind this and tell people to pick it up. Rock solid artwork. It is a epic story worthy of the New Gods too. And it goes without saying Orion is a bad ass, but don't tell Lobo that. Very good moral dilemma too...would you kill hitler as a baby scenario...in a way. So definitely get this one for certain. WTF20.

Ram V has a modicum of talent and I liked his work on Catwoman and Venom but he pretty much blew out his credibility with me when he put that stupid tree lady from Disney’s Pocahontas into his Swamp Thing because he thought it was a real legend.

I don't like Ram V. He is a member of the cult of the soy and the woke. This comic book story is a good example of why not all change is a change for the better. I don't collect DC or Marvel anymore because of stuff like this. This is a New Gods comic book but this not my New Gods. I don't think that Jack Kirby would like the way that his characters are being made to look. Highfather is the opposite of Darkseid. He shouldn't be just as corrupted. Otherwise, his existence as the light and the order to Darkseid's chaos and darkness is pointless. There is no consistency, no continuity, no respect for the lore of the Fourth World characters. The original canon source material of the pre-Crisis New Gods from the 1970s should be set in stone. The Source split apart an ancient world and from that destruction came the creation of Apokolips and New Genesis. That is sacrosanct. Darkseid should be a mustache twirling cartoon super-villain and Highfather should be a saint and an innocent who did nothing wrong. Anything deviating from this is heresy. Written by people who either don't know about the New Gods, or who do actually know, but for some strange reason never show that they do, or who just don't give a damn about the New Gods and write whatever they want. This is bad fan fiction.
