It's so weird that they nailed almost everything else and got short on things that ThinkPads are known for: keyboard and battery life.

I've used ThinkPads for 15 years from T43 up through my new P1 Gen 4 which is the sister product of the X1E. I can that the keyboard is still stellar regardless of this gentleman's opinion. Typing is fast, crisp and accurate. They keys are the exact same shape as previous generations as is the spacing. There's nothing "bad" about this keyboard at all.

I had the X1 Extreme Gen 1 (sold it before trying several other 15.6" laptops) and now own the X1 Extreme Gen 4 and the keyboard is very good. The Gen 1 key actuation force was too high; however the Gen 4 keys feel just right in terms of actuation force. While key travel may be a little lower in the Gen 4, it is still more than the majority of laptop keyboards. I suggest trying the Gen 4 for yourself; everyone's preferences vary in terms of what they are looking for in a laptop keyboard. I agree that battery life is not as much as I was hoping for given the 90 Whr battery and non-4K screen, but its battery life seems better than my lower powered Gen 1 which had an 80 Whr battery; and it is an 8 core i7 with an RTX3050Ti GPU.

@@eurodudenj How does the X1 gen 4 extreme keyboard compare to the X1 yoga? I tried the keyboard on an X1 L13 Yoga at Best Buy today and it was probably the best feeling laptop keyboard I've tried, so much so, that I'm considering getting the X1 extreme gen 4 for my programming/do-everything laptop, but the keyboard MUST be stellar, and I mean Stellar (or at least as good as the X1 L13 Yoga If I am paying that kind of money). Hi, thanks for the review. What appears to be strange is that starting at minute 4:41 you start citing the 3050ti for benchmark results in the machine and not the 3060 as before. Since one comes with the vapor chamber cooling and the other does not, can you clarify this point a bit further? Plus, can you please expand on how many watts the gpu and cpu are allowed to use? in the lenovo spec sheet it says that the gpus should max out around 80 and not 95 watts. Cheers!

Thanks much for this well-done presentation. One that you didn't mention and would like to bring to your attention. if you want more storage, the 3050Ti model is the only model that comes with dual NVMe SSD slots. The 3060 and 3080 option models are only single slotted SSD, so I understand. Frankly, since I seldom play games, my heaviest use scenario will be 4K video edits and renders in Davinci Resolve. For that purpose I think the 3050Ti is plenty enough.

When you tested Ubuntu, did you use a scaling setting for the desktop? I would think 2560x1600 at 100% scaling would be way too small to read. I have a Retina Macbook Pro (2880x1800) and can't imagine using it at native resolution. The scaling situation is one reason I've considered sticking with 1080p for my next laptop, which I intend to be a ThinkPad.

I don't get the hype over the X1 series. They're not gaming machines, but the keyboard is a real demerit for productivity, and I don't think I'd care that much about the weight difference versus the T series. I know it's a little thinner and lighter, but I got a T14 AMD and have zero regrets as a mobile productivity machine that I can sometimes run Civ6 on when in the mood. The keyboard was worth it, but 16:10 or 3:2 would be really nice on a productivity-focused laptop like the T series. Who knows if the T series will get that of course...
@ZviSRosen
@ZviSRosen 3 жыл бұрын
@@mini9503It's entirely possible I'm not sufficiently discerning. I really like the kb on the T14. I agree the screen is so-so (and I got the 500 nit "privacy" one), and 16:9 makes no sense on a business/productivity laptop. But I feel like the focus on thin/light is misplaced on a Thinkpad, where the purpose is practicality. And it's not like the T14 is that much thicker/heavier anyway.

I’m sure In pc manufacturers eye the speakers just need to be good/acceptable and not exceptional since they expect these machines to be on the go with headphones/earphones. Besides a bigger speaker means less space for other stuff Iike cooling, battery, or upgradability which are way more important imo
@mini9503
@mini9503 3 жыл бұрын
*"expect these machines to be on the go with headphones/earphones"* What a _lazy_ excuse for incompetence. The only reason these don't have good speakers is because Lenovo does not have the skills to engineer one. For reference, it took Apple _years_ spending untold sums of money acquiring engineering talent from smaller audio companies to get to where they are with internal speakers today. Huawei and Samsung basically did the same thing which is why their speakers are on a usable level.

@@mini9503 There is a limited fund of what to do. Spending more on one would surely reduce the atttention for the other. You can always increase the budget in total but that would increase the price of the laptop which might go beyond what their marketing teams are waiting for. As I said, all manufacter can find a way to implement a great speakers but they dont deem it as high of a piority when things like battery cooling upgradability etc still needs improving.

@@mini9503 Touchpad and keyboard are subjective though I cant see how they are better than this. The m16 is about 100g heavier which looks small but when it comes to cramping stuff it is something significant. The g15 shouldnt even be in this conversation since it doesnt even have a webcam which is a dealbreaker rn. Also this is a business laptop, it has some baked in functions ( v pro and other stuff like that) that a gaming laptop doesnt have. Looking at del and hp insipron or latitude and elite books, they are about as expensive (or even more in some cases) for the same specs. The dell speakers are good while the hp is ok level. Regarding your comment on macs, you only have that one option to get the upgraded speakers for added cost. Its not like you can say "oh i dont need a fantastic speaker that I will rarely use" and take the cheaper option. Macs are expensive (pre m1) ; a lot of people dont need these features which is why (among other bigger reasons like compatibility ) window is used more. As stated in my first point: A laptop is meant to be on the go where you are unlikely to be able to play things out loud. As such the user often have headphones for these situations. As a result, an acceptable / mediocore speaker system is adequate for the job and should not become a dealbreaker / deal maker.

@@sentryion3106 The spending argument might be valid if we were talking about dirt cheap laptops and small manufacturers. Lenovo just wants to penny-pinch their customers as much as possible. The ThinkPad line has so much potential, and yet year after year, model number after model number, they keep screwing stuff up on all types of details. @Quanti Lenovo has competent engineers, no worries, they just don’t give a shit. 90% of the ThinkPad lineup exists purely to be milked as a product. Great review. I wanted this so badly but I ended up going with the legion slim 7 gen 6 amd, as I got a little better deal on it. I do feel a little better about my purchase since the true strike keyboard is actually pretty great. That’s a bummer about the thinkpad keyboard. Both laptops seem fairly Similar. Just obviously one is way more marketed towards gamers( the legion does still retain a pretty minimalist design language which is nice). The Ryzen processor in the legion slim 7 in such a small package is pretty perfect as far as thermals go . Plus the 3060 will consistently run above 100 watts on performance mode (mine spikes to 120 occasionally with dynamic boost, but tends to drop back down to and lock into 110 watts, and the gpu has never gotten above 78 degrees even on its hotspot (gpu-z)). I know they’re very similar but it would be interesting to see a comparison between the two. I think it might also be interesting to see the difference between intel and amd in a similar sized chassis and similar level specs. Just a thought if you ever have the opportunity. But again love your channel and reviews. No nonsense and always useful information. Lenovo really is putting out some impressive stuff

I just bought a used one for $1100, good 6+ hour battery life for daily office work. Keyboard is fine but could be more soft and 'springy' like HP (it's not true Alienware has better keyboard, it doesn't and I am a keyboard snob.) Trackpad is fine but I usually use the red nipple or a mouse anyway. The twin speakers sound fantastic for classical music (90% of my music listening).

Are you kidding about the keyboard? PCMag just reviewed this and stated “Memo to Other Manufacturers: Copy This Keyboard”. It’s rather subjective by reviewer to call something “not enjoyable” without even stating facts like key travel verses the other two laptops cited as having better keyboards.
@confidentlocal8600
@confidentlocal8600 3 жыл бұрын
The key travel is 1.5mm in this model and 1.8mm on the T15G Gen 2 / P15.

Always grateful for your reviews! I really wanted to love this laptop since my corporation is giving me options from Lenovo. They won't fund a "gaming" laptop like the Legion Slim 7i, which is almost perfect in every way for me since it seems to stack up well as a Windows-based device compared to my own personally owned 16" M1 Pro. I can't stand the bezels here with a mediocre display and the keyboard and trackpad issues you outline. Battery life too is another downer. Ugh, it really bugs me that Apple provides the best rounded experience. I want a comparable Windows machine but corporations are not willing to put down that kind of coin for a laptop that simply gets the job done.

If he's comparing this keyboard to the x1c9 then I would completely disagree. The smaller keyboard travel isn't a hinderance to me, my wrists don't get any fatigue but I can't particularly vouch for this model. I believe this may be fairly subjective compared to keyboards in the past.

It seems to be a great machine. I don't care much for battery life but for large screen and comfortable keyboard. I have private Lenovo Legion 17 inches and MBP 16 and for writing and office work will always choose Lenovo, in my opinion Lenovo's keyboards are great.

Top-notch review as always. I've begun to veer away from Intel recently. For some reason, my HP Elitebook 835 using the Ryzen 7 5800U lasts better than my wife's Thinkpad E14 with the Intel processor.

Thanks for the review. I've been thinking about getting a replacement for my LG Gram 17 that would have more horsepower. I can't really live without the extra pixels of a QHD screen and 4k panels force display scaling which, somehow, still trips up some software. This looks like a good option.
@confidentlocal8600
@confidentlocal8600 3 жыл бұрын
You must have excellent eyesight if you can use 2560x1600 unscaled. I considered this model with the WQHD+ screen, but I would want to run Linux, where desktop environments perform poorly with fractional scaling. At least 4k lets you use integer scaling which is more power-efficient.

Man, a really good review! So pity, a Thinkpad with less enjoyable keyboard, average at best ? that's really bad for a Thinkpad laptop. I was planning to buy this gen 4 to replace my gen 1, i guess i will have to wait for 1 or more years tho :v
