I think she's a metaphor for our beautiful home, Gaia. She's on defense in the beginning, tired of being exploited for wealth. She just wants to love and care for us, and we're only concerned with how she can profit us. That's just my reading, though.

@@whiteshadow9143 I thought of it as greed over revenge. You were able to tell what their true intentions were. He had a eye for wealth over other people. Remember when he found a gold nugget in the very beginning. He was looking around and tucked it away before anyone else would see it. The same way people were “hush hush” about their finds during the gold rush so they can come back to collect more for themselves. For her, the way she grabbed herself in comfort after she realized her scream or spell didn’t work on him. How she followed him after he ran away. She was looking for comfort and love. In general, I think you’re right. She represented the “land” and the lake. She took revenge against the greed. I also can see a symbolization on how Mother Nature always shows us who’s boss when humans think we can dominate the land.

I saw the siren in Jibaro as more a representation of the land rather than the people. Scores of people died trying to get to her and that is where her danger lies. When the main soldier doesn't get lured to his death, she is curious and affectionate. In his greed and annoyance, he strips her of everything he finds valuable and leaves. In the end, the land remains, you can't kill it no matter what you take from it, but it suffers.

This interpretation (i think) is further supported because of how in the sirens territory you see that there are little colored circles around the foliage and trees. Once she dies the magic circles around the forest disappear then reappear when she is revived.

I think the whole pillaging thing is kind of overlooking the main point of the piece. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely greedy misguided pillagers but she is also a murderous monster thats killed hundreds, we don't actually know why they are there and the artist deliberately kept stuff ambiguous in regards to location and culture. The jewelry on the siren was based on different jewelry from multiple cultures around the world and shes based on a greek myth. The soldiers definitely had a strong conquistador theme but also had a lot of Germanic and Celtic design thrown in too. The real point of the piece is about toxic relationships. They both end up obsessed with each other but for completely shallow self serving reasons and it leads to the destruction of them both. Nature and land is used to make a point in the piece but not about literal land and nature, he just used land and nature to contrast the horrific toxic relationship, theres all this vanity and greed, brutal imagery that represents the horrific potential of some relationships. But its contrasted by beautiful shots of nature and the scenery, representing the beauty in whats real and often overlooked. And honestly on my first couple of watches I overlooked it too, so the point was made haha Its a really really clever piece.

But I know some people really obsessed seeing that topic in every piece of art. Like here you can see a leaf falling down and rot away.. Its about change, death, circle of life. Than some people will go "its about toxic realtionships". As an artist I follow many many pages and in every topic I see someone who forcing the toxic theory.

When she saw her body stripped off of her ornaments, it was like seeing a bird whose feathers were ripped to shreads and all she can do at that point was shriek in heartbreak and agony. My interpretation of In vaulted halls entombed’s ending is this: I think after wasting her Ammo, Harper realized she had no easy way of killing herself (she mentioned saving a bullet for herself, which I took as her not having the stomach for using the knife to do it) However, the creature was already digging into her mind at this point, shouting “Release me” over and over at her. What I *Think* happened is that harper, out of desperation, cut off her ears and eyes in order to either A. Prevent herself from being able to release him or B. Try to get him out of her head. As she’s walking into the desert, I believe what she’s saying is “Release me” over and over again, but in the creature’s native language.

Unpopular opinion but personally I love mason’s rats the most. The scene where the spider bot fired a rat to death when it was thrown vertically to the air made Mason realize how horror is this death machine at killing. It’s very gruesome, but interesting why they decided to graphically show it because they wanna point the brutality of the machine. It’s what subsequently piqued Mason’s empathy. The episode has everything. Humor, meaning, shock, sadness, closed with a good ending by them making peace (even Mason discovered that his “enemy” actually produces a great wine that he probably never tasted anywhere else before! Need to mention the "Swarm"`s origin. A brilliant story by Bruce Sterling, a friend and co-writer of a much well-known Whilliam Gibson. The book shows the story wider, dr. Afriel is already genetically-modfied person, and the pocession of that top-notch genetical logostics and management system of the swarm is viable for his faction, known as "shapers". Shapers are gene-engineers, confronting "traditional" cyber-enhanced "mechanists", so Afriel accepts the proposition of the mastermind with the hope and the feeling of doom at the same time. He will be either the one who can save the his part of humanity by infiltrating and corrupting the swarm from inside, or become the power which will kill everyone, including all foes. Seems like he has a huge Herostratus complex - and the book tells it more clearly. One more thing - the old race seen in the beginning was smart and wise enough to build a blockade around the swarm, and doctor Afriel had to go undercover, breaking the law, with no any chance for a "peaceful deal" shown in the episode.

I have to add two things: In "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" she also cut her ears probably so she would stop the temptation of the ancient monster... In Jibaro: The reason why everybody was lured by the siren was indeed their greed and that is also what she thought. imo it's because of the short nature of these episodes that lends itself to being far more creative. these can be as short or longs as they need to be, and worlds can be created and tailor made to tell that one story. take Bad Traveling. The explanation that this is a space fairing society that still uses Victorian era weapons and boating is absurd, but its all the backdrop to essentially create Monster Flick. These shorts are also not trying to set themselves up for a sequel or a cinematic universe so they wrap up with definitive ends, whether or not that means the main character lives or dies, something else movies don't do because that means they can't make sequels if it's successful. no Hollywood studio would end Vaulted Halls Entombed with the female lead walking away mutilated, because "we need her for the sequels"

@jman9064

I gotta disagree with yea on this one I easily think the last episode was easily the worst due to the following. The camera work and editing, the basic story, the weird art style, and finally the lack of any dialogue with the only sound being mostly lack luster music and screaming primarily from the siren. Now the anamation is top tier never seen anything look so good it was almost uncanny, but the way they went about editing that shit pissed off they way they showed it off made my head hurt with the quickly changing camera angles and fast pace feel of the cuts and idk maybe some people like that but it gave me a headache. Next the lack of dialogue, when listening or even watching a good story I like context and I think the lowest form of art or expression is what they did here with silent symbolism. Now it might just be me again but some dialogue would have help even if it was a few words the priests and knights said about why they are there or the siren making remarks about the dead knight but somthing or better yet anything would have been better then nothing idk the first time I watch this I was angry because of how moronic and a waste of my time it was. Lastly the music choice and sound design and frankly I just hated it more due to all the female screaming now to be fair it's a pet peeve of mine the one thing I hate more then anything is woman screaming at the top of their lungs it hurts my ears and irritates me idk why but if you wanted to put me in a bad mood that's how yea do it as for the music I had some moments were I felt it fit well but over all I'm not impressed again this most likely from the point where the editing and camera work followed by constant needless screaming most likely pissed me off but I can keep my cool enough to reflect and I forced myself to watch that shit 3 times so I can say over all its trash through and through. That said I think this and the third season over all slapped hard compared to the last season and nothing I mean nothing can be worse then that god awful second season finally the drowned giant that shit still pissed me off more for how long it lasted and how boring it was I can't bring myself to watch it without wanting to claw my eyes out and cut off my ears like the woman from the lovecraft short. But idk I think alot of artist shorts have low bars and even worse story telling skills compared to others it maybe just me but the more I ask around I'm not exactly wrong even with people who are more into artistic things than me. But this was my 2 cents take it or leave I wasn't trying to be rude but I just can't easily comprehend why anyone would like what I would consider to be trash in almost every degree and that's not even me bringing up the fact the one guy is deaf and a knight but i digress il leave it there no need to get into my love of history over dumb things.

I think Sarge was already predisposed to obeying Not-Cthulthulu's commands to release him and wreak devastation because he was a sadistic person, shown by how he was gunning down the fleeing terrorists in the middle of a Lovecraftian temple while being chased by killer monsters. Killing human opponents would seem like the least of your concerns at that point, but he did it anyway, and continued into the cave to pursue the surviving enemies even though the hostage was already dead, which they probably used to foreshadow him being more susceptible to the Not-Old One's corrupting influence.

In Vaulted Halls Entombed: there's a third possibility that you may have missed. She may have cut her eyes out so that she couldn't see, and if she can't see, she can't free the Lovecraftian creature. So, her body is on autopilot, wandering the desert with the instructions from the creature to set it free, but her body can't see to complete the task because it doesn't know where it is. Additional Edit: Part of the reason why I think this is mostly due to the Lovecraftian horror that the story presents. Yes, the creature doesn't look to be a member of any of the Old Ones, but typically, for the Cthulhu mythos, those that encounter such a situation are often killed or suffer a fate worse than death. And more often than not, people in such works try to end their suffering. So, in that regard, it makes sense that she was able to keep her mind about herself enough to be able to self mutilate herself in order to keep the creature from being set free while she still had control of her body.
@Martcapt
@Martcapt 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I figured she did try and manage to leave, but that was the creature's punishment for it. Although I guess she could as easily have done it to herself in her last moments of consciousness, but, then again, she could have also just killed herself (as she alluded to before). So I figured that was not something she did, but that was done to her... idk, it could have been clearer the ending. (As if she was no longer able to help, either way, the spiders had no reason to attack either)

(you know saying-eyes are window to your soul) And whispers as 2nd-ry effect. Seems like creature isnt telepath, but using some light waves manipulation (eye contact) and possibly sounds (whispers) as way to brainwash its victim. Thats why soldier cut her eyes and ears trying to prevent creature from invading her mind.If she managed that in time or not is another story..

I like the part about how the monster in Vaulted Halls Entombed was controlling the people and the girl cut her eyes out because she was haunted by it. But I think it might go even further and imply that the creature's mind controlled them using sight and sound. Which is why she cut off her ears and eyes to avoid being controlled. Great video! Here’s a couple names i’d like to add that some characters were very-closely based off: 1. The large creature with eyes closely ressembles Cthulhu. 2. The siren is Suvannamaccha from Thai folklore, which is why everything is so tropical. This ties in nicely with the story of colonialism, because Thailand was never colonized, but still experienced the bloodshed from colonizers.

What puzzled me about the Swarm was that the researchers knew several of this incredibly ancient hive's slave species once were sentient, technologically advanced creatures. It helps if you know a bit of backstory from the original text. Afriel's people (Shapers) were in a cold-war situation with the rival Mechanists, who were beating them. Afriel and Galina were out there as kind of a "hail Mary" strategy to find something useful, and stood to gain MAJOR rewards if they found a way to use the Swarm as a competitive advantage for their faction. Also, they were both gene-modded to be around 200 IQ, and had the accompanying instability and arrogance. Sterling wrote it in 1982, and for those of us who remember that time, the "take extreme measures to beat the other side" trope is very familiar.

I think it’s ambiguous and you can read it either way but I tend to think she mutilated herself to resist the monsters control and escape.

@@user-zg5ey5xo9i I agree with you. She blinded herself to avoid being controlled by the monster, which is believe is Cthulhu, and the alien noises she makes is her losing her mind.

I wasn't a fan of the conclusion to Jibaro. Him regaining hearing seemed too convenient for the tragic ending. If these guys had gone there due to "healing waters" not treasure, then I'd understand. I can imagine 100 mythical reasons why he regains hearing however none of them truly check out if it's not hinted at in the story.

This is going to be a bit (lot) wordy but I think I can break down what it represents. The pillagers are bad, yes, but its not a story of colonialism. Alberto the creator of the piece said this is a story of 'the most toxic relationship he could imagine'. They used colonists to represent one of the two negative parties, the siren isn't meant to be seen as a victim. A siren deceives men and leads them to their death, colonizers rape and pillage things and take everything they are worth. This is a story of two monsters meeting and destroying each other. In the creators own words 'a meeting of two predators' and 'a story with no heroes' Something we see a lot in his work, and one of the themes that has come up in his other pieces two partners 'returning' to each other in a failed relationship. This is what the water and healing represents. They couldn't really have her physically return to him because it wouldn't really serve the more literal plot. So after they have their meeting on the waterfall they needed a way to symbolize her return without her actually returning, thats what the bloody water represents. Bloody, angry and raging on its way to him, but when hes drinking the water is calm, and seems to be what he needs. Not only that its one of his 'true' needs, not a greedy self serving pursuit. She gives heals him by getting to what he truly needs from her, and he is healed. He's absolutely elated, but completely ignores the water that healed him. She was hiding the true anger, and although he was healed, it wasn't for his benefit. It was so she could manipulate and destroy him. Viewing this piece as a piece about toxic relationships as the creator Alberto intended opens up so many themes and made me respect the piece so much more. There is absolutely no fluff, everything represents something. I could go on and on about this piece, its unreal. I could write for hours about a 15 minute piece. That says a lot.

Jibarro was so sad. It didn't need any dialogue and its message was powerful. She wanted love, he wanted gold and riches. She gave him love, He bled her for gold. He kills her for the gold, Her blood cures his hearing. She is reborn again in the cycle of death and he is sucked into her trance because he's been cured ONLY to die by her hands... Pretty fucked up lol but also beautiful.

Dude, the siren murdered thousands of people indiscriminately. She wasn't a good being... neither was the knight but him killing her is pretty understandable given he watched her kill all his comrades. I think this story shows how dark and dysfunctional people wanting different things from each other can be.

@@joshp.2872 Exactly; the entire point was that the siren uses the beauty and wealth to lure the greedy to her and kills them - that's why her lips cut him when they kissed; she is literally a trap for the greedy.

@@Taal111 Wrong. It wasn't "Beauty" or "Greed" that caused people to go suicide frenzy; it was her voice. Did you even watch the episode? Like, I get it, everyone wants to try to make it deep when its really not, but come on man. She deserves to die for everything she's done.
