A good article and I agree that the most benefits would be gained by using the ssd as the primary disk for the os. In my 25 years experience of using traditional hard drives only a couple have ever failed. I still have a few IDE drives form 2003 that work perfectly. Used as archival disks via a hdd caddy, they store some of my old film collection. Dont know if I could trust an ssd to do that.

I would personally recommend the use of a relatively small SSD (120 to 240 gigabytes) as the boot drive, and high capacity HDDs for data storage. I would also recommend creating a clone backup drive, using a 2.5" HDD of a similar capacity to the SSD, via a SATA-to-USB adapter.

Good quality SSDs have around 7% overprovisioning included in a partition the user can't access. This is why you see SSDs with sizes of 240GB, 480GB andh 960GB. They're actually 256GB, 512GB and 1028GB drives respectively. You can bring it up to 10% if you want; however with good quality SSDs, it's really not necessary. Always check the specifications of the SSD with the manufacturer before buying.

@jamesedwards39235 жыл бұрын
Remember the 3 2 1 Rule of backing up. Have at least three separate copies of any important files. Since drives and storage mediums do fail. You should have two different storage mediums. Try to keep one copy of the file off site. Just as an example. A portable Western Digital 4TB drive cost under $100. Buying an internal drive of the same size is about the same price. Not including the enclosure. I say if you have data backed up at home. You should invest in a good enclosure. By a 10TB drive if you are a data storage hog. Or a two 10TB NAS. Or something close to it. Cloud storage is good if you can afford to store your massive data yearly. This is the bottleneck for most of us. Paying that yearly fee. Given the failure rate of most drives. It is more economical for most to just buy SSDs and conventional hard drives. That way your risk of total data lost is minimal.

The SSD is super-fast and I'm storing my software programs on it from now on, while I'll use the HDD for storing my documents, music, photos & videos.

Most people would assume that if you left the device in optimal conditions, in the correct temperature and humidity, then the drive will last forever. This is actually untrue; data stored on a hard disk drive will gradually degrade, and data stored on a solid state drive will actually degrade faster. This is because NAND flash stores data as electrical charges, which leak away quickly in comparison with changes in magnetic domain polarity. In saying this, data on an SSD won’t start degrading for about ten years, although this can vary depending on the type of NAND memory used. In terms of storage, factors such as temperature and humidity can have a big effect on the lifespan of a drive. Humidity for example can lead to oxidisation of metals inside both hard disk drives and solid state drives. High storage temperatures are particularly problematic for SSDs, as data degradation in flash memory occurs at a faster rate. For day to day laptop or PC users, you don’t need to worry about the lifespan of your drive, whether it’s an HDD or SSD. With mobile devices that are carried around more, you need to take particular care not to drop them. If you’re looking to store data long term, it might be best to choose an HDD over an SSD.

My only regret is that my solid state drive is 120 Gigs. It is a problem making videos since the drive is too small. Whenever I use the drive to 80% capacity my video editor fails. I had to migrate my editing to my second drive which is a terabyte hard drive. Next time I will purchase the biggest solid state drive I can afford. For the time being I use it for everything and then migrate it to my hard drive. It saves me a lot of time and I don't even have to worry about the fragmentation problem.

@AndyinMokum6 жыл бұрын
Yes they do, You can also control the rate of wear on them. A good quality SSD should last the average users well over 10 years. Most manufactures rate their SSDs by assuming the user is going to write between 20GB to 30GB per day every day. They're certainly more robust than HDDs. The larger the capacity the SSD the lower the wear rate. This is why I always purchase the highest capacity SSD I can afford.

I do allot of video and photo editing, and I never really noticed slow boot and load speeds. It's a powerful laptop, with an i7CPU and 32gig of RAM. It also has an nVidia GPU. After installing the SSD, I was blown away! Not only is the boot time so fast, my render times in Pinnacle is blistering fast! In my desktop, I have a smaller SSD as a boot drive, and two 2tb HDD's for storage. The SDD is perfect for non-re-writable system files, and the speed loss in the HDD's is almost unnoticeable. I replaced the HDD in my PS4 with a hybrid HDD. It has a small SSD built in as a partition. While not as fast as an SSD, it is twice as fast as an HDD. At the time I did the swap, SSD's were too far out of my budget, LOL!

Booting up my computer and logging into Windows was legitimately a 2-4 minute process when I had Windows installed on my HDD. Now that it's on an SSD, I get to my desktop and can actually USE the computer within 20-30 seconds.

I upgraded my Mac Pro early 2011 model (Intel Core i7processor) first with a 750gb hybrid HDD which sped up boot time enormously along with general speed increase overall. Now I moved the hybrid to the DVD slot and installed a 1tb SSD plus increased RAM to 16gb and the computer absolutely flies. Was planning to spend over $2,000 on a new Macpro but at this point the only real benefit would be in weight savings and 4K video editing for which neither is that important to me.

There are a couple of things that you did miss. For one thing, solid-state drives are getting less expensive all the time. Secondly, they don’t always have flash memory. Thirdly, they don’t need power to store the data. That’s because they’re made with nonvolatile memory. Finally, a solid-state drive, even the fastest possible data bandwidth, which is NVR me, will slow down a bit as the drive gets full. They mentioned this countless times on PC World. That having been said, I think your assessment is correct. In fact, I’ve noticed that a lot of PC manufacturers have ditched mechanical hard drives entirely. However, there’s also a middle ground that you forgot to mention. Hybrid drives. Basically it’s a hard drive with a solid-state component.

If you have a laptop, it works even better. I had a Dell 2520 Vostro that did really well and got just under 4 hours on the small battery. I switched to an SSD and battery life soared to 6 hours. Boots fast. Doesn't really matter how many programs you have in the background at start. You don't even need the fastest and more expensive NVME drives although I have used them also and they are theoretically 6 times as fast but it doesn't really show up in the real world for most uses.

My own personal take on storage memory is: If the price doesn't matter to you, go with the capacity ssd you need. Extensive writes to an ssd can wear and tear it down but that won't be an issue to rich folks! If the price matters to you: Go with an enough capacity (for windows I'd recommend a 128GB ssd) as a boot drive and use hdd for storage. Also to prolong your ssd life try to set your apps to save their data on the hdd and minimize the amount of writes made to tour ssd. I have my downloads (which are saved to downloads folder on drive c as default) set to be saved to my hard drive.

Using SSD as bootable(OS) and HDD for data storage is best, not only it provides speed, but also reliability, when I received a BSOD, I simply disconnected my HDD, and reinstalled Windows, with no loss of data, works as an automatic backup. (I backup my data on an external HDD too although). The best part of this configuration is that u need to buy just a small sized SSD, not the pricey 1 TB one.

The first hard drive I ever saw was installed at the bank building, shared with the town billing Dept. Phone co, And post office. The thing was was hauled in on a flat bed truck. . Asking (for the school news paper) how much? The reply was $55.000 dollars and the whole contraption took up about a 1/4 of the room. And not to mention the card punch machine. The printer and a little cubby for the operator. (Circa1959) now the whole mess fits in a box hardly bigger than a shoe box. Hard drive! you came along way baby. Kv4li

I've an HP Elitebook 8470p using a dual core Intel Core i5-3320M CPU with a max speed of 3300 MHz, I've upgraded this with a 240GB SanDisk Ultra II SSD. I'm not a Windows user. I've Peppermint 8 installed. This is a Linux distro, based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS source code. It's a lightweight distro weighing in at around 485MB on boot. Even installed to a slow and reliable 1TB WD Blue HDD, it's a high octane dragster of an OS. After installing it to the SanDisk Ultra II SSD, (tweaked here and there). It goes straight to a "Ludicrous Speed" OS. I'm getting a boot time of just under 5 seconds. From the desktop, everything loads instantaneously. Saving data is very slightly slower; however it's still way ahead of writing to the fastest HDD. I now run all my computers with SSDs. When the caddy arrives, the optical drive on this HP Elitebook will be replaced with a second drive. I've a 1TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD ready for this task. It'll be used only for critical /DATA storage, SWAP and distro testing. Like you, I absolutely recommend using an SSD for the OS of your choice and heavier programs, such as games. The benefits outweigh the disadvantages by a hundred fold. It's best upgrade you can make to a computer using an HDD as a primary drive. I strongly suggest to always purchase the largest capacity SSD you can afford and the fastest one if possible. On desktop computers and dual drive capable laptops, use a good quality, high capacity HDD, or SSHD to store critical /DATA. Use symlinks to do this, (symlinks "Rock"). Once you've used an SSD, you'll never want to use a "spinner" as your primary drive again.

SSD is a nice option if you're power supply is 80+ type and you have a good and stable electrical power in your place otherwise you'll need a good automatic voltage regulator with the ones that has a servo motor and UPS, otherwise all your system files will be gone due to power surges.

Ssd drives look great and sounds great but I have heard they can sometimes course a slight power issue if you use you laptop for hours it can run the battery down but it's just something that I read about I think it was when they first appeared in some older pics and laptops, so I have a question if your pc laptop has a tone of programs on it is it really easy to move them to the ssd storage quickly ( cloning your hard drive ) I think this is correct or I have another question why can't you simply move your apps to a cloud then copy it the ssd drive?
@PSKResearch5 жыл бұрын
SSDs consume less power than mechanical drives of the same capacity.
@Jamesalec635 жыл бұрын
@@PSKResearch I stand corrected it might have been old version of ssd computers the earlier ones? But can you get them as pluggable USB drives or WiFi ready? Ssd drives aren't cheap sold separately but housed in an computer their seem to come down in price but I have seen ssd and hhd in the same housing does this always work I mean in laptops or even in chromebooks I know android tablets use similar methods to ssd but is there any new coming that might replace ssd in the future? Years ago there was bubble memory that was the big thing back in the 70/80s now it's cloud storage which could replace ssd in a strange way a pc that has a screen and no system or anything never know bubble ssd and s/cloud storage and AI system system
