I think its the result of most of their crew being raised and living in america. These mystery religions sound more like sororities and fraternities.

They were basically sects. You had to pay to get in there and all practices were to be secrets. If you told an outsider about anything that happened during the secret meetings, you would lose your life. And if you follow all the rules you were promised a better afterlife with the heroes/gods.
