Third Thumb Changes The Prosthetics Game

London-based product designer, Dani Clode designed a third thumb to change the way people think about prosthetics. Clode believes that prosthetics extent a wearer's ability. They shouldn't be regarded as a replacement to part of the human body. The third thumb is made from a series of interconnected parts: a hand piece, an attachment, cables, motors, and two Bluetooth controllers.

I'd be careful if I were these scientists. First, it's an extra thumb. Next, it's 4 extra limbs. And finally, *Doctor Octopus*

Actually, I kind of like the idea of extra limb add-on prosthetics. Why chop off a good pair of arms for better ones when you can have both? Plus, it can double one’s work.

Heck, even the elderly might benefit from it too. Just a thought! Another con would be the funding but still. It's just an idea. ^^

With this tech, make a naga/Lamia tail you can wear over your legs! You would pump your legs up and down to move, as if slithering. This would make a really cool costume for LARP or Halloween or filming or whatever. Leaning left or right would turn which direction you go. Leaning on one foot excessively would cause the tail to curl up, but if coiling an object, it will squeeze but not crush the object/person. I would buy something like this haha! Imagine using the illusion of making a rubber hand feel like your hand to also feel what the tail does when wearing it!

Honestly I find this extraordinarily fascinating. One thing we tend to forget is that prosthetics don't need to be full blown exo-skeletons or replacements for lost limbs or body parts, they can be something so small as an extra thumb. It brings me back to Ghost in the Shell and the ability to split your fingers into multiple connected smaller limbs to increase productivity. There's also stuff like Chell's Boots from Portal, which is essentially used as an excuse to survive fall damage, but the idea of having prosthetics that can be attached to your legs that allow you to survive falls from great heights are a very similar concept. I honestly think this is a lot more genius than most "meme-worthy" responses this has gotten.

@dunewizard

Several professional prosthetic designers have already gotten away from this form of interface and are perfecting some that interface directly with the brain, both wired and wireless. This is basically the level of a high school science fair compared to the level that is already in use. This is probably less of a viable product as it is a proof-of-concept for someone's resume.
@MarianKeller
@MarianKeller 6 жыл бұрын
The issue here is that there is no easy way to grab the motion information for an imaginary digit from the brain by sensing the right motor neurons, which is what regular prosthetic systems would do.
@dunewizard
@dunewizard 6 жыл бұрын
Our brains actually do not rely on thinking about how to make a appendage move, but what we intend for an appendage to accomplish, at least one prosthetic design company, using low profile electroencephalography has created an interface to operate whole arm replacements, with individual finger articulation, as well as wrist, elbow and shoulder, without the need to map neuropathways to former muscle groups. The portion of the brain that controls motor function is extremely adaptable as well, to the point of allowing other portions of the brain to learn to operate body parts that were once controlled by damaged or missing brain tissues. There really is no reason under those conditions that the brain would not be able to learn to operate a 6th digit on either or both hands seamlessly, just as easily as the users of this device learned to control it with their feet. My objection to the "technology" displayed in this video, is that it essentially impairs the user rather than empowers them, and has insufficient functionality to justify the loss, just as the older style hand replacements used the bicep muscle to provide force and control to grip, at the loss of full bicep function. The current goal of every designer of prosthetic should be to restore or enhance function without losses, so designing a device that gives a minor increase in functionality at the major loss of other functionality is working backwards, technologically speaking.

I did a drawing of a hand like this about ten years ago, but I was thinking it would be genetically engineered for the person to have it, I never thought of using a prosthetic! For guitar I think the best would be two sets of opposable four fingers, kind of like a spiders legs, so you can reach around the back of the neck of the guitar from both sides to hold down chords on the top or bottom of the fretboard... I’ve seen these new prosthetics where people are controlling them directly with their nerves on their skin they basically just learn to think how they want it to move and their brain makes their nerves fire the right way subconsciously it’s amazing...

Exactly. I want a study that looks at how the brain reacts to controlling a limb it was not designed to handle. I believe the brain is flexible enough to handle it, but I want in-depth analysis. Soon, with this kind of outside thinking, we could have things like a brain-controlled hang glider (even powered versions). Not to mention the normal sci-fi extra limbs and things like that people would normally think about. Now, I'm a bit biased with my dream for flight, but a big drawback of wingsuits is the lack of real pitch control, making it impossible to land gently (like a bird). But in the future, things like prosthetic wings could actually be a reality, since brain controls are much faster and complex than a normal pilot would be able to handle. So we could have real, personal flight. But that's just scratching the surface of what could be possible in the near future. Perhaps it still won't be *affordable* per se, but just thinking about it gets me excited.

if they make it attached via nerves, i don't think you will be able to even move it for a while because i don't think the brain will just suddenly learn/accept the new digit immediately. after that it will just become natural and soon you'll be fluently playing guitar or even piano with that extra thumb and be able to play slightly more complicated pieces.
