The mage was ironically not even the best mage build out there he was int faith using lots of cool but sub optimal spells. His real super power was light roll. My final conclusion was "okay so strength players saw 2 broken spell casting builds and universally decided magic was easier without ever actually trying it. Got it."

Why risk such a dangerous playstyle when you can spam bleed and frostbite and burst down everything in 10 seconds? Status dex builds in Elden Ring were comically broken, the average player could literally beat Malenia by spamming hoarfrost stomp. Dark Souls 3 also had the same dex meta, the sellswords twinblades melted everything in pve, straight swords and curved swords were king in pvp.

For me, when it comes to builds, I generally think Fromsoft do such a good job of giving viable options in every class that there is no "best" or "weakest" build, there's just players who know how to build a character completely and people who think you only need to put a stat to 50 then that's the strongest they think a build can be. After playing all of the souls games on multiple different builds, I'd generally say the amount of options available makes Dex the most viable and easiest build, magic (the apparent "easiest" build) is just the easiest to pick up but building it out to be actually OP takes some knowledge, then strength is the hardest to pick up because it's the slowest, so its about timing, but as Zanny is showing with a good build can literally make you OP very easily where timing is irrelevant.
