I have always felt that George, having come from his second rail Beatles status, had that big hit "My Sweet Lord", and it was a giant hit, like John and Paul used to have. It was a vindication to him, and then the lawsuit came, and it hit him in a very vulnerable place. That said, I like "This song", and the wit on display.

Hey Matt & John. Kenny from NJ. I follow both of your guy's channels & when you join forces, your analysis of Beatles music is exceptional. Matt, you're quite correct from what I've read about George being averse to outtakes being released. I'm happy to have any outtakes from George's solo career. Keep up with your great videos! You too John.

Pure Smokey, Dear One, Beautiful Girl, This Song, and that delightful version of True Love by Cole Porter are some of the highlights.I like the album artwork and the gatefold, George and the band look happy and healthy . Great chat thanks Matt & John ! I got 33 & 1/3 for Xmas 1976 and loved it. I hadn't heard "All Things Must Pass" at that point, so this became my favourite George album...and it still is ! Interestingly, John accused George of walking into the trouble with "My Sweet Lord" and that he should have known better ! Ironically, at the time George was off to court, Lennon was settling, out of court, the lawsuit for "Come Together" and Check Berry's "You Can't Catch Me". I also remember that George did do quite a lot of publicity for this album, and I saw Granada Reports (north west England local news show) when George appeared and then watched old Beatles clips. Magic !

Regarding "This Song', which is one of my favorites on this album and in George's catalogue overall, definitely one of his best, you'd mentioned he was great at writing ballads and as you both discussed "This Song", I ran it through my mind and found the melody under the lines "this song we'll let be, this song is in E" to be very tuneful and soulful. It put a smile on my face as his stuff always did. Even when he didn't set out to write a beautiful ballad, he always had something beautiful in all his songs.

So Matt, I was surprised to hear that you don’t like Klaus Voormann’s bass playing. I’ve always felt that he’s got a unique and wonderful style that moves so easily from melodic to hard-driving and back to melodic. Especially love his work on Plastic Ono Band and Living in the Material World. Oh well, to each his own…

George's inspiration for 'My Sweet Lord' was the old gospel song 'Oh Happy Day'. "“It really just knocked me out... I just felt a great feeling of the Lord. So I thought, 'I'll write another Oh Happy Day, which became My Sweet Lord.”" I see the ex-Beatles' '70s output suffering from 2 issues: they tried not to sound Beatley so they would not appear to be cashing in on their past. The 2nd issue is they were no longer competing with each other face to face so that high bar was no longer there.

Yes, the odd thing is, it's possible that BOTH songs were inspired by "Oh Happy Day" and that is why they ended up so similar, although that still wouldn't explain why nobody thought to inform George of the similarity.

Nice discussion guys. In terms of George 'borrowing' the melody for 'He's so Fine' and apparently not realising it, in his book 'Behind the Locked Door', Graeme Thompson theorises that George knew full well (as did everyone else) that there was an over-similarity, but that he simply thought that being an ex-Beatle would be enough for him to get away with it.

Greetings Matt ✌️, Very entertaining conversation and review of 33 & 1/3 with Sir John Heaton👍 its definitley one of my favorite albums from George along with his self titled album from 1979. -Whats interesting about this album as you and John mention is that its a cheerful album, being that George was going through some rough times such as his divorce to Patty Harrison, the Litigation issues with Apple, getting sued over My Sweet Lord, tax issues over the concert for Bangladesh, the fall out with Allen Klien and (if that wasnt enough) a bout with Hepatitis. Another observation about George that I would add to the conversation is his Love/Hate (more like hate) relation with his fame as well as with his fans, it seems at times like he didnt care less, but at the same time he did - I kind of get that same feeling from his Estate as well (Olivia and Dhani) - anyways Matt Great Show and I hope You guys keep reviewing more Beatle solo albums -Cheers to you and John 🍺

Hey Matt...Terry Tutor here...loved this discussion....also am a subscriber to John Heaton's channel..OK...The keyboard in the middle (and at a lower level on "Woman Don't You Cry for Me" is a clavinet ( think "Superstition " Stevie Wonder)...George was always harmonizing with himself from "All Things Must Pass" on...Go back and listen to "What is Life", "Awaiting on You All"....etc....Share your passion for Smokey....You are aware that he was also the writer/co-writer of other huge Motown hits, including "My Girl", "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "My Guy", " Don't Mess With Bill" ( his given name, after all is William ), etc...and yes, he is still very much alive and still retains that voice ( @82)....I also share your view that, even at the outset, the Beatles solo careers were plagued by the idea that they had forgotten that you could ( and most of the time should) make a record with less than 40 guys playing on it...everyone seemed to vie for the MOR market.....Clarity and separation matter more to production than anything else....Peace and Love.......

Nice conversation, I enjoy your honesty. I agree with you, Matt, music was changing, and Harrison was moving into a different sphere... a change of audience that was also ageing. Music was diversifying. Styles were coming in, going out... new age music was appearing... And I agree with you, George Harrison is philosophical. He offers ideas, of course contradictions are everywhere. Ironic, witty. You two are providing us with insightful comments. But I don't agree that Harrison's time had passed. He just pulled back. Wrote beautiful ballads, and he introduced religious belief into rock music. I don't mind his pop synth... Try Vertical Man by Starr. Not bad. Merci Beaucoups is a very very fine LP. Thank you for these duologues. (Oh, John, I just saw Ringo Starr and had that eye contact as well. A nice feeling.)

Good day, Matt. After this duologue of yours, I pulled out the Motown box set released in 1994 of Smokey Robinson and the miracles (35th anniversary). Yes, the 1960s were also Robinson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye. Their music influenced so much of the other stuff coming in from the UK. Motown, Stax (Walk on by, by Isaac Hayes was surely a turning point in pop). I was there, playing guitar, dancing to the new worldview rising from the USA that had been kept away from us. Just a suggestion.

Really loved this video. John is correct to say that Klaus Voormann's bass playing doesn't have the snap that Willie Weeks delivers. It's What You Value is a fine track, with the joyful feeling of Rubber Soul, although the intro and fade out could be shortened. I think that the collaboration with Tom Scott was essential in giving George a structure to work around- I felt that George's albums have less impact when he is the sole producer. My one disagreement with you is on Gone Troppo- it really deserves another hearing and I think you'll appreciate the effort. Wake Up My Love should have less synth in the mix, but every artist was doing that in 1982.

An enjoyable conversation about one of the strongest Beatles solo albums. George seems more confident on this than on the previous two, both in terms of his playing and singing. The 79 album is even better and, I would suggest, because he was not chasing trends it nowadays sounds a lot less dated than most other music from that time, including Blondie and Talking Heads, good as they are.

Great discussion; brings back many memories. The one thing that I would disagree with is that Jim Gordon was the wrong drummer for George Harrison's music. At his peak, I think that Jim Gordon was the outstanding drummer for popular/rock music. Being a protege of Hal Blaine, I doubt there is much he couldn't play. And as the song was mentioned during your discussion, recall how Andy Newmark sat at the side of Jim Gordon through the final takes of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" so that he would be able to play the song in concert.

Picking up on Pure Smokey, the players, and difference in the sound versus (say) Dark Horse. Tom Scott is an interesting link. On Dark Horse, you have Tom Scott & The L.A. Express (essentially the band that was touring/recording with Joni Mitchell). On 33 1/3 you have Tom Scott and Richard Tee. In 1975 Tom Scott broke with the L.A. Express and recorded an album called "New York Connection" with Richard Tee and about half of the members of Stuff (who would go on to work with Paul Simon/"One Trick Pony"). Also featured on New York Connection is George Harrison (on the track "Appolonia"). If you listen to Appolonia and Pure Smokey you may get an indication of the source of one aspect of this new George Harrison sound. By the way, Tom Scott speaks about New York Connection having a transformative effect on his own music (particularly in terms of the rhythmic aspects). It's proably no surprise given that Steve Gadd, Ralph MacDonald, Gary King and Hugh McKracken Eric Gale formed the core band on that album.

I love “33 1/3”. I really like the “George Harrison” album. George was like Mike Nesmith who had a love/hate relationship with The Monkees for many years. It wasn’t until the last half of his life that Nesmith began to embrace his past and enjoyed being a Monkee. Had George lived longer, perhaps he would have experienced the same thing. During this time there was footage of him watching The Beatles performing “This Boy” and “Twist And Shout” and he seems genuinely happy and proud. I think he was proud of being a Beatle, but he internalized a lot of that. Paul is probably the most proud Beatle and Ringo to a lesser extent, even John towards the end of his life was embracing his past. George not so much. Yet if you listen to his solo albums, they are probably the most Beatles-esque of the four. I got “Gone Troppo” for Christmas 1982 along with “Tug Of War”. One great album. One bad album. I do love “Dream Away” though from “Gone Troppo”. “Wake Up My Love” sounds like a rejected Mike and the Mechanics track. I think Ringo’s falling out with Mark Hudson hurt him musically. His albums since then have been meh. Hudson really brought something out of him that no other producer besides Richard Perry in his solo career has.

8:10 yes the last couple of songs are about Olivia, but when mentioning the first track you just mention the funky new sound, not the fact ( for me anyway) that the song " Woman don't you weep for me" is a song telling Patti that their relationship is well and truely over.

I would argue that Smokey Robinson does have a very revered album but it was from the late ‘70s. It was called Quiet Storm and it eventually lent its name to a sub-genre of r&b.

Enjoyed the latest video Matt with John always interesting to hear the both you n johns views like yourself in the mid late 70,s I began to lose interest in solo beatle albums after collecting from 1970 in George’s case I didn’t get this one for some time later as I felt at the time dark horse n extra texture just didn’t do it for at all it was only my interest was revived around somewhere in England that I picked this album it was a marked improvement to dark horse n extra tex has pointed out the lack of George touring was disappointing I believe George was not one for playing live which was a shame didn’t bother again till cloud nine which was another winner finally this was a great improvement from his last two going to be interesting what ringo you both do but admit I fell over the end after goodnight Vienna but thanks to johns Reviews I did warm to couple of later ringos but not enough to buy great stuff matt

I think I had the 40th anniversary cd of All Things Must Pass?.. it came out in the 2001(?) but it had a few demos including awaiting on you all, and let it down, and a few others I think run of the mill(?) was in there too.. There’s also a version of Brainwashed that we should get with some special edition.. the one that’s more stripped down and in line with George’s notes. I love the record. And, Lynn was probably right and justified on his production as George trusted him more than anyone… but I’d enjoy listening to a stripped down version to compare

I agree with your take on best of George Harrison. When it was announced, they said it was his 13 greatest hits and I was so curios as to what songs were on there. When I went to the record shops I was so, dissapointed. Half Beatles songs. I had those already.

I actually agree with Mr. Heston on this one…I vastly prefer MATERIAL WORLD. The vocal production on 331/3 bothers me , it’s not out front enough. My favorite song on this is CRACKERBOX PALACE. MY favorite George albums are ALL THINGS of course and the last one BRAINWASHED , which I think is a masterpiece!

Matt, I always enjoy your discussions with Sir John H. But I have to agree with you. George's solo career is spotty at best and long winded. He deserved more songs with the Beatles, and especially at the end, however they kept him at bay. He obviously didn't have the talent or the energy to be a trail blazing solo artist. Ringo's career as well is at best 2-3 albums of quality. The rest, if it had any other name would be unlistenable. Anyways great video, I look forward to the next.

I liked Klaus Voorman on Nilsson Schmilsson, especially, "Jump Into the Fire," which was a lot like a track from the Plastic Ono Band album. I'm from the punk rock generation though, so I like straightforward players like Voorman, Ringo and Lennon.

Punk rock - at the time - aged whatever the ex-Beatles were doing. Strangely enough, only Paul ‘appreciated’ what it was doing. Harrison and Lennon both dissed it and those of us who had appreciated the Beatles tuned them out in favor of the excitement of the new music. In retrospect, there are very close parallels between the Clash and the Fab 4. The Clash didn’t have the 10000 hours in Hamburg but they did have a very strong songwriting duo in Strummer-Jones a drummer that played to the song and extreme awareness of music around them. (A comparative video of their histories and breakups would be interesting). Harrison in particular lost touch in the 70s and it took Jeff Lynne, Dylan, Orbison and Petty to make interesting again for me.

The other thing about MY SWEET LORD is that the main thing they were reluctant about to releasing it as a single was that it was about God and too religious. If you have watched the Scorsese George Doc Living In the Material World..Spector is interviewed and he was the one pushing to make it the single! Saying the religious thing didn’t matter…why they did not hear the exact melodic match to HE So Fine or ignored it is a mystery. Who knows….

I disagree with the dig on Klaus Voormann playing. He might not have been Carol Kaye but he was objectivity a good player. Just listen to his work on “Whatever gets you through the night” He’s on par with a lot of Dee Murray’s stuff. In fact I thought they used Dee on that track before I read the credits. I think he was used often because he had a good vibe as a person and was very accommodating as a player

I would call him "average." You use the terms "good" and "very accommodating". I won't argue with that but I've listened to his stuff from the old days of Paddy, Klaus & Gibson through the late 70s and he doesn't make the difference the Willie Weeks-types do. That's all I'm saying.

I think Klaus's playiny has a good balance between simple playing (root notes) and being melodic (almost McCartneyesque). So Lennon and Harrison could have their fill of McCartney without actually having to deal with Paul himself. Harrison probably liked that he wasn't busy, but yet he liked Weeks
