I am a long time fan of your channel and am taking your lessons more seriously recently since I am looking forward to real professional growth as an interior designer. My current firm doesn't have a good drawing standard since there is no licensed architect in the small office.... and I've been struggling to improve my company standard without a professional CAD drawing foundation since I got hired as a fresh graduate. I really appreciate you sharing the invaluable information that you've built up over years/decades. I know this is not easy to do.

I really appreciate you giving us such a deep dive into your work. I have been using CAD pretty much since college, and have always battled with wanting that aesthetic and using CAD. I even taught AutoCAD my first year out of college as it was so new and I had more experience with it than the instructors (weird right?). I went into school with a mechanical pencil in hand and came out with a mouse in it. So again, thank you for your take on keeping the art in architectural drawings. It keeps us from looking like engineers! LOL Seriously though.

I'm B.Eng in Civil & Structural Engineering in the Arctic and a big nerd in static calculations, screw / bolt / weld / other connections. But lately I've been digging deep into architectural design and interior design, as I've been planning and made tender documents on housing renovations with my work for the last 2 years. I find it very interesting choosing materials, colours, minimum requirements for performances (air and water tightness, windload deformations, etc.) and making drawings. In my free time I look at city plannings, see possible areas to build a house and sketch on AutoCAD Map3D. It's super fun and I understand more what architects work with. I need to understand more of what architects go through - so I can work with them better on construction projects. Currently, in my free time, I am planning my future dream house on my parents' ground. And I can very much relate for the steps shown in this video! 😊

I've been on Autocad for 35 years now, and I think I've refined it. 1 more tip if you want to do coloring, don't do it with solid color, you get much better shading and control by using ( ok we have to color our plans for local authority, different items different specific colour's) ok that said. Use dots hatch to colour. I like 1000 scale dots 0.2 pen thickness. That gives you a very subtle colour, and then you can control the colour intensity by lowering hatch scale to 900 or 800. And it uses much less ink when printing. Try it. Over years I've programmed my keyboard, so I hardly ever click on icons in menus. If you work by typing shortcuts you speed up your work 3 times because you work with 2 hands and not just with the mouse.

As a ME, I’m pretty much a AutoCAD first sketcher. I like to iterate over a handful of ideas quickly, so I’ll copy and paste current iterations next to each other as I go, so I can try out major changes without loosing the original, or grab components off older iterations. By the time I’m done, there’s usually ten or twelve copies sitting right next to each other, and I can really quickly see what’s working and what isn’t. I also find the ability to get the rough scale correct, right from the beginning really helpful. With paper designs, it will look like everything fits and works only to realize one integral component is just irreparable the wrong size. Just the way I go about it though.
@79Hokie6 жыл бұрын
"It takes all types to fill the freeways!" I start all my projects in CAD. I only use tracing paper when meeting with client to mark up (overlay) the drawings about our options. I just found it faster and easier to make changes with CAD. I like you, still think in 2H, HB, & 2B. Colors represent line thicknesses to me. I could actually draw in just 3 colors. I will look at your templates our of curiosity. After 30 year, I like you, have developed my own (really just a continuation of what I learned at previous firms) Good video as usual!

Excellent video Eric as usual. As a licensed architect myself, I admire your way of clearly explaining your reasons for doing things, and your methods. It is interesting to hear how the other architects do their work flow. I hand sketch on trace the design, then layout the schematic plans with #2 pencil. After the initial meeting I use Sketchup to fine tune the schematic plans. Where you draw from the scratch the autocad plans, I import the plans, elevations, sections, into autocad from SU. It is a little work to erase the unwanted lines, it is still easier than measuring and drawing new lines in autocad. I then change the lines to whatever layer I want for thickness. The other thing I noticed is you draw your ext. walls to 6" for framing and 1/2" drywall, and interior walls it is 6-1/2" for drywall on each side. I dimension to the stud walls, and therefore my walls are 5-1/2" or 3-1/2" thick. It is easier for the framers to work with less chance of a mistake. Checking to see if you tried to import SU into autocad. Thank you, keep up the good work.

Your template is extremely well put together. You're so organized I think you've never had any need to use the more modern features in AutoCAD (like blocks, annotative text, etc...). These would save some time. Maybe not as much on your unique one-off type projects compared to an office doing more repetitious work. For me, I tend to do more "production" drafting (multi-residential, etc... ). I've really dug deep to maximize productivity. I wish I could convince more people that great drawings can save the owner a decent amount of $$$ by the time the project is built, even if they take slightly more time on the front end.

Ahh! Learning my lesson now. Be very intentional about “breaking from the grid”. I’ve got several places in my house that really hurt. Places that are 8’8” forcing me to cut up two pieces of 8’ stock, or my 20’4” porch that prevents me from buying the cheaper standard sized beams. Stuff that didn’t benefit from the unintentional few inches but sure cost a lot more.
