I used to have one of these. Well, as a kid, the family had one. We also had the Space Cruiser before the Townace. Used both for towing a caravan. Our Townace was also a Japanese import, a right hand drive but as we're in the UK, it was fine. In the front on the dash in front of the passenger was an altimeter/inclinometer showing the pitch and roll of the van. They also had a nice footrest for the middle rear passenger, behind the driver as that's the cover for the engine. The total width, from behind the front passenger all the way over to behind the driver lifts open to get to the engine. There were only two seats in the middle rear in the Townace leaving a gap in the middle to get to the 3 seats in the back. The 2 middle rear seats were swivel arm chairs. Separate climate control next to the rear seats too. Great vehicles.

I've a 99 HiAce commuter, which although younger misses out on many of the features this one has. But I still love it😀

Just bought the exact replica of this. Same year, same trim and I absolutely love it 😍 it’s got so much character and is so capable off road. Just a shame it’s so hard to get parts now!

In Australia in nobody was really into four wheel driving farmers mostly bought them and l owned a Toyota liteace which was a smaller than the Hiace which has been the go to van in Australia for the past 30 years there have been many other manufacturers that have tried but no longer sell vans in Australia Nissan don't sell a van in Australia but Mitsubishi do and the European and British vans aren't that common but the Ambulances are the Mercedes-Benz vans but maybe replaced by tge Hiace there is a Hiace Ambulance in the area l live in in Sydney were l live. There was a people mover based on the Liteace called the Toyota Tarago which was sold up until recently but there is a Toyota Estima which is a JDM and we don't have to wait 25 years to get JDM vehicles we can get them under a year old note of the JDM people movers are 4X4 except for one its a six seater from Mahindra called the Scorpio an extremely reliable vehicle selling slowly but once the word gets out how reliable and good they l imagine there will more of them on the road and the word has got out about the five people movers from Toyota the Estima Voxy Noah Vellfire and Alphard the Estima been the more common see those every day also the Lieace van came in a 4X4 version but nobody lifted or put big tires on them just drove them around standard they have disappeared of the roads and tge 4X4 Litace was about 2 inches higher than the rear wheel drive Liteace the only way you could tell that they were a 4X4 apart from the front manual hubs was there was a 4X4 deal towards the rear on both sides very subtle also got a 4X4 Mitsubishi van not a Delicar just a Mitsubishi Express 4X4 the Delica came later and they aren't that common nobody in Australia wants a 4X4 van or people moved except for the Mahindra Scorpio but Mahindra have a two wheel drive people mover called XUV 700 and has a petrol engine were the Scorpio us diesel
