I think the thing people are missing here is that if you think this shoe is expensive, it is not aimed at you! they are only making 521 pairs so you won't be able to get one anyway. Also the "only one marathon thing" is true for the Alphafly too, its big performance gains wear off pretty quick too but it doesn't stop it being a useable shoe afterwards and I imagine it will be the exact same for this one.

This shoe has a new midsole formulation that sacrifices durability for energy return, and the outsole is paper thin. This shoe isn’t designed to perform or last long beyond the specced 1 marathon and warm up run. So, it isn’t just expensive, it won’t last long at all. Designed for marathon PB attempts, and those whose livelihood depends on that.

I understand that it's normal for technology in all sports to improve with time and lead to better performance. But I believe that improvement should be gradual. With this shoe and certainly with the introduction of carbon supershoes, giant leaps have occured instead which make a mockery of every previous athletic achievement. And ok the pros will all be wearing shoes like this soon enough so the playing field will level out (vs runners of their own era, PEDs notwithstanding, anyway). But at the amateur level it's all getting very pay-to-win. I recently bought my 1st carbon shoes, not even a very high end pair - the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 2s - and have immediately beaten my 5k, 10k and HM (by 4 mins!) PBs in my only 3 runs in them so far, and I know I'm not in the shape I was when I set the old ones. I feel like I've gone up an entire tier as a runner, not because I'm better at it, but because I paid more than normal for shoes that effectively propel me along. I also know the guys rocking up to parkruns in alpha and vaporflys are getting an even greater boost to their performances In the UK anyway, running has already become a materialistic hobby where the participants are overwhelmingly middle class. Not quite to the extent of cycling, but it's going that way. There can't be such a huge gulf in performance between like a £50 pair of basic Asics and the cutting edge if you want more people who aren't called Richard and drive a Tesla to be committed to the sport.

Yeah, he must have been thinking of the Prime X. Pro 3 has been used repeatedly and to great success in several marathons, including by the mens' top-4 of Boston Marathon 2023 and 3rd place in London and Berlin ´23, so it is certainly not illegal.

Best way to protect your ankles is to strengthen them gradually over time. Try walking over uneven terrain in the most minimal/barefoot shoes you can find (Vibram fivefingers are good but anything with a thin zero-drop flexible sole will help, Merrell vapor gloved among many examples). Do it for a short time then increase over time, add some balancing exercises too. The more you rely on the shoe for support, the weaker your ankles will become - but you can take charge and have a strong injury-resistant body :D

That would be a bad idea. You're supposed to buy running shoes that have a space in the front (about an inch) so you are on a foot shaped shoe, with an additional space... if they were the shape of your feet your feet would get crushed from impact slide and foot swelling. Shoes aren't shaped like feet for a reason, to protect your feet, the issues that many in the barefoot community raise aren't actually about modern footware, but are about wearing modern footware that's too small a size for your feet, which many do.
