Thank you so much for mentioning the ever so controversial subject in this video. So many people need this clarification in the hobby. I've watched your Tank Talk/Videos with Jason from Prime Time Aquatics and it all makes sense. Anyway, nice upgrade with your tank. It looks really good! Great upload! Oh, and I instantly thought Larry, Curly, and Moe lol.

Nice work! I’m sure you’ve tried this before but I figure why not share my success. I have my two returns at the surface allllll the way to the right and as they return they push water left across the surface. I then I have a wave maker on the left side pushing water left to right along the substrate. This keeps a counter clockwise rotation going in my tank. I then have my 2 intakes staggered. One at about mid water and the other 2 inches off the substrate. This dramatically helped with any floating debris. Just figured I’d share

I had the same issue with my 240. Big fish constantly kicking up particulates. Filtration was a 48" sump. I added not 1 but 2 FX6's and while it did help it still didn't give me the crystal clear, particulate free look I wanted. What did work...virtually overnight was adding 2 Tidal 110's stuffed with poly-fil. I change the poly-fil weekly. A few days after I added the 110's I removed 1 of the FX6's and the tank is still crystal clear. Of course I still get particles when the fish get the zoomies but it is cleared super fast. Just a thought.

Lmao as you mentioned pumps in a sump I was singing the hammer song. Lmao 😂 I was rolling! (1973 here 😜). Great video I have a tank with two Oscars and it is very high maintenance. I appreciate what you did here.

Never forget that your audience is mostly people who have aquariums - we know that they don't always look perfect and that doesn't mean that you aren't taking care of them! :) The 360 is awesome! "Dead nuts quiet" - that an industry term?? rofl

Holy crap...as soon as I heard you say "Pumps and a Sump", that very song popped into my head. 10 seconds later, and you're talking about it.

I enjoy watching your channel. I have owned salt and freshwater fish for 60 years. Usually 4-5 tanks ranging from 50-125 gallons Big fish like big dogs require more maintenance. Major water changes weekly really helps. All my tanks have emperor(pentair) uv sterilizes typically way higher what the recommendations. My 125 has a 50 watt and everything else less than 125 25 watts. The water is always crystal clear with no slight green tinge to the water. Fish swimming in air. I really believe helps keep disease down and better algae control. Sumps are the best. The largest you can fit under the tank or place it further away. My 125 has a 40 gallon sump for example. You can easily see the condition of filter socks. So easy to clean every 4-6 days. Food starts to decay in 3-4 days. It may not be decaying in your display tank but still decaying in your sump which is the same water. Canister filters are a pain as you must take apart taking more time and thus less frequent servicing and food continues to decay making the water look terrible. I have always wanted to add an automated continuous water changer but never got around to it. With sumps it would be very easy and not noticeable. Water changes are never fun. Heavy feeding means even more water changes no matter what size tank.

With your 360 gallon tank you need at least a 125 gallon sump. Your sump looks very undersized for your tank

Add a wavemaker. Kaveman Aquatics swears by them and Cichlid Bros also use them. It keeps the debris circulating so it finds the filter intake.

Hey john.ik im no expert,but i just wanted to suggest using a wavemaker.ive seen many people,even a lot of big cichlid keepers use these.they help with aeration,and create a ton of flow that basically forces all the poop and debris into the filter or sump overflow, insted of letting it stay on the substrate.just thought something u might wanna consider,as ive seen a lot of people fix their detritus issue with this

Being a major movie fan, other than Oscar the Oscar, I do a search in IMDB for names containing Oscar. As in Oscar Hammerstein II, the other half of Rogers and Hammerstein. He was a beautiful albino oscar, and I called him Hammy. I have a tiger oscar in my office called Isaac, after Poe Dameron from the most recent Star Wars Trilogy, etc. I’m having fun with it. 😊

Moe, Larry and Curly (come on Paul, CAD and John, you can do better. I applaud your suggestion, but get the order right, sheesh) The Stooges are always a solid choice when naming a trio of Oscars. And if Lisa ever lets me buy you that Bumblebee Oscar, there's always Shemp... or Cuely Joe (but I'd stick with Shemp).

@0:35 I think you mean 8x3x2 .. I know it’s not my tank but I’m pretty sure you’ve said so in the past, plus it comes out to 360 gallons and 8x2x2 is only 240. Cheers :)

I may be wrong but a 8'x2'x2' aquarium is more like 240 gallons, not 300+. If it was like 30" high it would be closer to 300 gallons, and Custom Aquariums even list their 300 gallon as 96"x24"x30".
@michellebrouellette6 ай бұрын
I ran the math several times and came up with 240 too (2x2x2 is 60 for easy calculations) I think it might be 3 feet front to back instead and that would make 360.

I keep a Oscar and a few bichirs myself in a 220 and haven't had much issue with floating debris. Obviously your tank has more large fish than mine, but I'm curious if there are other factors. Like how much and how often do you feed? More food means more waste after all, and my fish have stayed plump and happy despite usually only being fed every other day.

I have a 45? Tall? Or something around there with a huge stump in the middle. I made a spray bar and pointed it the side wall / down. It creates a current at the bottom that pushes debris across the bottom and under the stump. Over to the one side for easy access. One fx6 doing that and one near the surface for current with both intakes ont the other side could be badass for that tank :)

Hey John, I have a bit of a pipe dream at the moment of getting a pair of Oscar fish. I just wanted to ask if a 90 gallon is big enough for just the two fish and if a single aquaclear 110 would be enough filtration or if I would be better off with a pair of them.
