You are a breath of fresh air, not only are you funny, after 35 years of playing golf the old way, you gave me the best tip ever changed my golf swing from the get go. Weight anchor on the left side with straight arms has me reaching greens in regulation like I did in my ,40s. At 75 years young, I'm excited playing great golf....wish a golf pro like you were around in my hay days, believe would have more consistent wins. Thank you Liz .

Tom, you described my father's golf swing to perfection. He's resting with the angels now, but I could see him & his swing in the first two minutes of your video. He knew better. He'd taken professional lessons, but he could not stop himself. He ruined every good move he made with that "reach for glory" move. You've saved the family, Tom. We, the survivors, will turn our shoulders while we keep the left arm straight. We'll turn our shoulders until our left touches our chin, but we'll not break that left arm like Pop-Pop did. The reward for that bit of golf discipline, is more sweet spot strikes & less toe jams & shanks. Thanks, Tom.

Love of your videos. I watched this one with fascination--the straight arm feel is sooo helpful. But I was a jerky robot until I saw that your right elbow always flexed just a little at the top. Once I concentrated on keeping my left arm straight, and avoiding overturning during the backswing, everything fell into place and life--for the moment--became bearable. Thanks for the guidance and encouragement.

@SagutoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Welcome aboard, Steven!! Just a little bit of preliminary advice as you get started: 1) It is crucial to take sufficient time to master the fundamental building blocks and basic motions of the swing! I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when a student jumps ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating himself/herself to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built (including the setup particulars as some key aspects will likely differ from what you may have been taught previously). 2) One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the Golf Swing Simplified course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2a) The recently released "Get Out and Go Play" quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied in #2 you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the new “Office Hours” forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with other golfers in the SagutoGolf community. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I monitor the forum regularly and am a frequent participant in the discussions, including assisting with swing-related inquiries. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to hearing from you regularly in the Forum and to assisting you in building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Thanks for your message and have fun out there!! Tom

You know what is so great about Mr. Saguto? He actually gives a crap about you getting better. I have taken a few lessons in my lifetime and I have gotten the vibe from most instructors that they are so discontented with the inability of their students to get better or them trying to get better and actually practicing what they teach that it just turns into, "Here's the lesson, go practice. Thanks for all your insights and drills to reduce the number of variables in the golf swing. I love the “keep arms straight” concept. My question is as you start the downswing both arms stay straight… and the right arm doesn’t drop down and “glue” to the core/abs as you turn through. Is that correct?

This may be the secrete sauce I have been looking for but the jury is still out. All I can say is the results so far are very promising. I tried this yesterday hitting about 150 birdie balls in my yard and made better more consistent and powerful contact then I have been able to accomplish using all the other drills and tips I have watched on YT - and it’s simple. An added benefit is it allows for an easy more natural flexion of the wrists to help create lag by just keeping the wrists soft and letting them naturally flex when you rotate your hips at the start of the downswing. But I am leaving that for now and focusing on just keeping my arm straight since it is still somewhat foreign to me and not something ingrained into my swing yet. I decided to try this after analyzing the golf swings of some of my favorite YTers, a few of which are close to my age (66) but get a lot more distance than I do swinging pretty easy. I noticed they all keep their arms straight so decided to focus on that since I do(did) not. I tried a few swings in the mirror and when I keep my arm straight I come to a point with my right arm a little over parallel with the ground and my shoulder turn is a comfortable 85/90 degrees. I can certainly appreciate how much more in control the swing can be from this position, but generating any significant CH speed seemed somewhat counter intuitive. So I did a YT search on left arm straight and found this video and you young man…explain it all beautifully. I am basically a self-taught golfer that learned to improve my game through YT videos and web sites like Top Speed Golf (Clay Ballard) and Wisdom in Golf (Shawn Clement). They are both good teachers with a lot of passion for teaching, but both failed to discuss the importance of keeping the lead arm straight. Yet by doing so, many positive things occur…or at least it appears so. If I have learned anything being a YT born golfer, it is to test and verify before jumping in with both feet or heaping praise on the teacher. Anyway, long story short…I plan to stick with this one. I am very hopeful based on the initial testing, that I may finally be able to learn how to consistently strike the ball more pure and solid, as well as gain some club head speed and get the distances I know I am capable of achieving. I know it will require some practice, but fortunately for me, I enjoy practicing and learning the intricacies of the game as much if not more than I do golfing. And if enthusiasm equals success…well than I am even more hopeful because you are one the most enthusiastic, energized and interesting golf instructors I have run across on You Tube. Not sure quite yet…but you might end up being my hero. And if so, I pledge to sign-up for more if this goes as well as I think it will. Cheers mate !!

I'm glad this resonated well with you, Alan!! Based on your description it seems like you have a good understanding as to how this lets the arms and wrists act on autopilot and without the need to contrive anything in that regard. This represents a key discovery for a lot of golfers, and it is definitely something very much worth ingraining! You'll find it, Tom. You're doing great!! As confidence in your swing grows you should find more and more that you are playing "golf" instead of "golf swing" on the course, at which point your mechanical thoughts will be reduced to one or two at the most, and you will be nearly entirely focused on your target and not your swing. An excellent book that may help you with this is "Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game" by Dr. Gio Valiante. I've recommended it to many folks in the school, and they are raving about it! Tom

Hey Tom great video! Quick question. I understand the concept of Straight Lead arm. Doesn't the trail arm have to bend a little bit during the backswing in conjunction with the solar plexus rotation? What I take away from the video is that as you begin your downswing with a slight forward lean and you're rotating through the ball, you straighten the trail arm to return back to the both arms straight position. Thank you for your insights and your wonderful golf teaching. Your old Led Zeppelin loving friend, Keith from New Jersey👍
@SagutoGolf2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it, Keith! Yes - absolutely. The _"feel"_ is straight arms, but of course the wrists hinge and the trail arm folds to 90 degrees, and I make a point to specifically mention that. It's just that we don't want that folding of the trail arm to occur prematurely in the backswing. Have fun out there, and rock on!! Tom

This swing makes the most sense to me. I spent a year following another gentleman’s swing on KZbin. My handicap, and scores were moving on up, my fun level was moving on down. I was having absolutely no success with it. My fault, not his, as it seems to be working for others. The frustration level became unbearable, I decided I was quitting golf! I been there before, but this time I really meant it. Started thinking of buying a motorcycle, so I would have something do do in the summer. How does KZbin know this? Along comes a few videos of Saguto golf. I watched them with one eye closed, as my golf ego was just too bruised. After watching two or three videos, it all made sense to me, and seemed simple enough for me to try. I picked up the pieces of my fractured golf game, and two days ago, went out and tried to apply this simple technique. I shot a great round! First one this year. Today, I hit many very good shots! It’s a pleasant surprise to watch the ball fly beautifully off the club while at the same time wondering what you did to make that happen! The six misses, 4 of them on one hole, were costly for the score. However, I now have renewed hope and know I am on the right track to better golf. I did hit my longest drive of the summer so far, 242 yards! I will be watching more of these videos and paying a lot closer attention!

I'm glad you are enjoying my content, Pete! And speaking of Skynyrd, you may wish to have a look at this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3iYYqWChNJpfJI With regard to ball position, first of all, camera angle can skew one's perspective of where it truly is. Beyond that, you do have some leeway. In general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. For example, my personal preference for the shorter clubs tends to be a position that is slightly forward of prescribed. (By the way, I strongly suggest using alignment sticks when monitoring ball position - one on the foot line, a second one parallel to the first to mark the target line, and a third perpendicular to these to show ball position - as our side-on view from above tends to skew our perspective of the actual location of the ball relative to our stance.) By the way, have you considered enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school? So many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. I recently began using the stack and tilt method. I’m getting soreness in my left hip. Is this probably just my body adjusting to the weight forward / hips opening approach? Thanks Tom. Your teaching is great.
@SagutoGolf2 жыл бұрын
If that soreness continues I'd suggest making sure that your setup is correct. You should be balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting your knees over the toes to activate the ground connection, and then pushing your butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. Beyond that the prescribed Stack and Tilt setup has the weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the driver), both feet flared out approximately 10-20 degrees, and the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. Now, if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing and achieving consistently crispy, compressed ball striking bliss, please consider the SagutoGolf online school. I'm pushing 69 and have been playing golf since college days. I've had multiple lessons from various so-called instructors. Never - until you came along - was I told to keep my left arm straight. I figured this out accidentally on the range one day. Ball went dead straight and it's repeatable. Then, I saw a YT instructor say that if you're struggling, just shorten your swing until you figure it out and you will likely not lose any yardage. So, I tried that and quickly realized I'm not as strong or flexible as young ones are and I'm almost forced to shorten my swing. A shorter swing also helps keep the left arm straight. I haven't lost any noticeable distance and my ball consistently goes straight. And while the driver's path might shallow because of club length, the left arm concept ALWAYS sends my ball straight. I think golf instructors are like medical doctors. They have no real interest in seeing you improve because then they would be out of a job. I haven't had to take a lesson in years. I'm self-taught and using these two concepts has helped me tremendously. The last two 9-hole rounds I golfed par and one over. makes the game much more enjoyable. You're a bit whacky in your approach, but you always get my attention and I like the content of your videos. Good job.
@SagutoGolf2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you are enjoying my content, @jtboise1, and I commend you on your self-taught success! You are correct about the issues associated with taking it back too far. The key here is to avoid going beyond your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete and the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury Thanks for your comment and have fun out there! TS
@Alan_Edwards2 жыл бұрын
We have a very similar story. Check out my comment I left when you can. Hard to believe I have never heard this from any of the instructors I have used.
@jtboise12 жыл бұрын
@@Alan_Edwards I read your earlier comment and it sounds like you've gone through my past life. But, I am cured - finally at age 69.5. When I stand over the ball I have only one thought - I say it out loud - after I have my alignment. that thought is this: "If you can have only one thought, what would that be? STRAIGHT ARM.!!!" If I think of nothing else in my swing, the straight arm cures a lot of other faults. Almost impossible to come over the top if I get a decent back turn. A straight Left arm makes the club go where it is supposed to. I also added what I call the "no-grip grip." Johnny Miller said many times that all golfers hold the club too tight. I hold it to where I feel it could fall out of my hands. I begin the downswing (with a straight arm, of course) with just a little bump of the hip toward the target and then let my body rotate - letting my brain understand that it is the body swinging the club and NOT my arms or hands. Anyway, it works wonderfully for me. Oh, and done final thing - I tell myself to not swing hard. I find that when I try to add power (instead of just clubbing up) my right hand takes the club over the top. This - and the no-grip grip - just seems to take the right hand out of the picture. Just along for the ride. Saguto is right - especially for us older dudes - no need to take the club back so far. When I shorten my swing I don't lose any yardage if - guess what? - my Left arm stays straight. I saw another KZbinr instructor - Monty Schienblum - also suggest that you will have more control if you shorten the swing. Fewer things can go wrong in that shorter distance. Happy golfing.
@jtboise12 жыл бұрын
@@Alan_Edwards Also, if you follow this guy (Tom Saguto) you'll know he's a proponent of the Stack and Tilt swing. In all his videos, like this one, you can see he starts and finishes his swings with most of his weight on his lead foot. That is the stack and tilt. I found another YT instructor (Jim Venetos) who preaches this in a different way. So, I always try to just sit on that left foot and don't move an inch off the ball. Lovely feeling and it's easier to end up on your front foot, because you're already there. Over and out.
@Alan_Edwards2 жыл бұрын
@@jtboise1 I like the idea of a single swing thought too. Having too much in your head is counterproductive. For me right now it is to keep the left arm straight for sure since it is new. But my normal swing thought is to lead with the hips. If I don't then my swing tends to not be as smooth and strong and I pull shots to the left of target. I assume I am coming slightly over the tops since my arms are even with my hips instead of slightly behind them. I also subscribe to Mr Short Game. He talks a lot about the swing being from 90 degrees back to 90 degrees forward. That is where all the magic happens. If you can't make good contact making a short abbreviated BS and follow thru how can you expect to make solid contact if you go further - makes sense to me. But until I started keeping my left arm straight I could not go back any further and make good contact. That's why this one move has been so good for me - at least so far. All I know is I'm pretty geeked right now and look forward to practicing every evening. Just using birdie balls and hitting golf balls into a net right now, but I am clearly making better contact then I have....possibly in forever. Real nice to hear someone my age with a similar story and having the same sort of success too using this one concept. Makes me feel like it's not just another short term fix. I might finally have that solid repeatable swing everyone is looking for. Seems like I have been working on my swing a long time...too long. Now I might have one I can count on and take to the course and have some fun golfing. Thanks for sharing your story brother.

Great video! What are your wrists doing in this swing? It appears that they are 90Degrees at the top of you swing.

Glad you enjoyed it, Tony! The wrists are going along for the ride, with their hinging and unhinging dictated by a good grip, the body motions, the weight of the clubhead, and the connections of the upper arms to the chest. There are no contrived manipulations of the wrists taking place, but because I keep them feeling "oily", they respond with that nice 90-degree angle you mentioned. Cheers! Tom

Tom great content as usual. Just curious are you playing this ball off your left heel? From the face on view it looks like ball is quite forward for irons. Can you comment on this or would be great if you post a video on ball position. Thanks
