I think $150 is steep for a budget board, but not unheard of. There are a lot of decent options around $120 or below, and I was recommended Keychrons for QMK support, or the Epomaker Galaxy80 otherwise. There are many $70ish barebones as well

The Gem80 is a great starter keyboard. I love mine. The downside is that I’m still not able to configure mines…

I wish more keyboards, well, any, keyboards has the F13 to F24 keys. Super handy for binding stuff without having to worry about anything else using the combination of keys. You don't get just 12 more keys, but also 12 keys you can use with Shift, Ctrl and Alt, and combinations of those.
