I'm relieved to see that every artist ist sometimes. Someone told me that you should never ever post your fails, because it will be bad. For me that's not the way. Seeing that everyone fails sometimes is more couraging and motivating to keep on.

This was really inspiring for me, as someone who just noodles around with visual art. This also applies to my primary form--poetry--sometimes, you have to air the bad stuff so you can figure out what to toss and what to keep and work further on.

I Think it makes us see more professional artists as human and more easy to relate to when we see them struggle. To know that it's not because we're a bad artist but because we're human that we're struggling. I Think your last portrait was pretty cool actually but I understand that when you're looking at something abstract as a more detailed painter it's easier to criticise yourself but honestly I think it was really cool.

I like that fact you showed the art you weren’t satisfied with, it shows that we are all human. Also, your art that you didn’t like doesn’t mean everyone will think like that, I didn’t. It shows that experimenting will not always come out the way you want but learning from it is what we should take away from it. In the process, you could learn a new way to make art and actually enjoy it lol

I just want to say that I LOVE that you posted this video! As a beginner, trying to learn how to 'art', figure out all new art supplies and find your own style it can often be so discouraging to see piece after piece of incredible art and not see the struggle or work that went into that piece, especially as you say, on social media where people don't post the 10 bad pieces that it took to get that one spectacular piece. It can feel like everyone else just puts pencil/paintbrush/marker to paper and beautiful art appears in an instant while when you try to draw the most basic, generic face for example, it ends up looking like the elephant man's ugly cousin. It is genuinely such a relief to see that even someone as talented an artist as yourself has days where nothing goes right and all the art (in their opinion) looks terrible. It is a reminder to those of us at the earlier stages of our artistic journey that art is a process which you never stop learning and that's one of the beautiful things about art. I also think that the fact that you didn't give up, that you persevered is really inspiring. You were clearly having a really rough art day and have been working so hard recently and it would have been the easiest thing in the world to just scrap the whole video. Part of the reason you did push through it may have been that it's your job (although there is a fine line between working hard and overworked - please take care of yourself first, we will always prefer no video to you stressing yourself into burnout) but I think it also had a mental aspect to it. Yes it was tough and you felt like giving up so many times but had you done so it could have knocked your confidence in your artistic ability and created more stress/bad art cycles in your future work. How much better does it feel knowing that you didn't give up? While you may not feel able to be proud of the art you created today, you can absolutely be proud of the fact that you stuck it out, worked through it and ended up making something complete instead of giving up! Personally, I have done nothing with this box, or the one before with the liquid graphite paints, except swatches so you have inspired me with this video to go back and have a proper play around with some of the more neglected Scrawlrbox items! 😊 Oh, and I actually really love the final portrait you did (the one you kept) - it's such a unique piece and seeing it created (especially alongside all of the struggles for that piece and the ones prior to it) was fascinating to watch! So thank you, for having the courage to share your artistic process, and progress, even when you dislike the outcome of said process. You rock! 😎🤘🏻

I’m a firm believer that every piece of art has an ugly phase! Some art has short ugly phase and some art has a longer ugly phase. I have really deep issues with getting through the ugly phase without trashing a piece. What I like to think is that we all have a number of art fails inside them, and every time we get one or more of them out of our system, it means that we have fewer left inside us!

I actually find it really interesting seeing this sort of videos too. That artists, who are making so wonderful work, are struggling too. The reason why I love Wafflels' videos so much, and also adore this one, is that these videos shows the whole process, with all struggles, re-drawnings, doubts in abilities and everything. I've always thought about art and artists like it's something unachievable to a regular person like me, and such videos show that artists are humans too, not living gods. When I see all the way, it feels so much grounded and possible, I actually want to do my own art. Sometimes someone's "failures" might be an inspiration for others!

hi, i think its great that you posted this video! when i see artists sharing their art, they always share their most perfect pieces, almost as they never do anything wrong and they never feel like giving up on something. And that always makes me feel bad about my art and myself, because i mess up a lot, things almost never look the way i want them to look like and i give up on a lot of my projects because of constantly failling. Seeing your video made me realize that things are not always perfect like some artists try to portrait, that there's a lot of doubting, a lot of mistakes and everyone feels that, not just me, and that's ok. I think artists should definitely share more of their failed pieces, and not try to always portray that they are perfect and make no mistakes. Thank you so much for you video!!💕

Thank you for being so open and transparent about how some days things just don't go the way you like, and honestly videos like this are so important? Validating that just because you have one off day doesn't mean that your creations are worthless or that you should stop creating. If more people had told me that when I was younger, maybe now I'd be more daring with the things I do. Now as an adult, even though I want to draw and want to learn to draw, I find it hard to start because I have close friends whose artwork is so beautiful. I struggle with not comparing my drawings (if I ever do them) to theirs, even though I know it's not logical or fair to compare them at all, when I barely draw and she's drawn for well over 20 years. Videos like this are very very important to people like me, where you don't see the finished piece, where you see the struggle, and where you can learn to overcome that

I struggled a lot with my art (and I still do) because everyone posts their best and most polished work so I didn't know that it was normal to be frustrated and sometimes you do art that you end up hating. I think it's nice you talk about this! Often when people mention "art block" they refer to not having inspiration to create art but for me personally I legitimately have days when I feel like my hands aren't working like they're supposed to and every drawing I do turns out bad and not anything like my standard level, so it's nice seeing that represented in your video!

Great job, pushing through the "block" and the struggle with supplies and all. I think every artist knows that feeling, and as many commenters have already said: it's really nice that you still posted the video. Shows us all (old and new artists) that bad art days happen, that sometimes we struggle, and sometimes don't work out as we want. Also: I really liked the result of that "autumn leaves and mushroom" painting. I thought it was pretty and with really good colour-use. It was a bit saddening to see the shot of it going in the trash.

Love this video! I'm sorry you had a bad art week. I appreciate you uploading it and your story, as you are so right, young artists need to see that even the best do unfinished, experimental work behind the scenes. I remember going to a Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition and being blown away by seeing scribbled pencil sketches by Frida alongside her finished paintings. I LOVED seeing that even Frida Kahlo did scribbly fast sketches, so I don't have to be ashamed of mine! This is why they call it "art practice"...it takes practice! Specially when learning new mediums and experimenting to see what resonates with your work. I forget that so often. Also...creating a video is a highly skilled artwork in and of itself. Doing that on top of MULTIPLE paintings in one week? Not to mention all of your other work and life tasks, that is all so much to deal with! So many people aren't even capable of doing one of those things, let along all of them! You are doing amazingly. Naturally, it will feel like a slog sometimes. I hope you have a better day (just for yourself) today, tomorrow and moving forwards.

Thank you for being brave enough to put this out there. It made me feel soo much better to know that even really good artists have tough days where nothing seems to work out. I think doing art box challenges is much more difficult than it might appear when just watching, since normally it's either a new medium or one that you might not use every day. Practice makes perfect even in art so doing something out of the ordinary is way harder. Even though you usually make it look easy I appreciate all your efforts and struggles. Keep up the good work 🙂

You can gesso them and they’ll be ready for some amazing artwork in the future. I will say that heavy body acrylics are difficult to work with on small canvases esp without any acrylic mediums. I really like the final portrait. I love the texture that you managed to create. As you say, art is different to everyone who looks at it.

It looks like a lot of people struggled with this ScrawlrBox! So, I actually really like that purple/blue negative space portrait you did, one of the 'failures', but I can understand how in the moment it was just too much. Well done for persevering! I had to give up and eventually create a collage page out of it.

Thank you so much for this. I recently experienced the same thing. I wanted to be creative but I just got so frustrated that nothing was turning out. I let go of what I was trying to do and just drew. I was able to make a decent piece after that!!!!

I really appreciate you showing the hardships you have sometimes with your art. I love doing art but I’m not good at it. I just enjoy it. It helps to know even talented artists have a bad day sometimes. Lastly, I think drawing Sally would have been a fun way to do the challenge. The texture idea would work well with fur maybe.

I honestly appreciate your channel and all of your content, and also you sharing Sally with us! For me, I think this box in general is a bit of a fail. I've only done texture work with oil paints, not acrylic, and had never even heard of heavy bodied acrylic until people got this box. Guess I'm kind of out of the loop. I feel like the biggest issue is the canvas. With that much texture, I feel like it needs to be a bigger canvas, but obviously they can't send people something so big. They could have also thrown in a few more colors, and given people an actual palette knife instead of a plastic card. When you mentioned techniques for adding texture, I wish they had included some of that in the information they gave, unless they did and I'm unaware. Either way, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it much either unless it was something really abstract.

Can I just tell you how relieved I am?! 😚 Practically the same thing happened to me! I saw these cool palette knife portraits and decided to make a fox painting in that style and absolutely hated the process! 😅 The fox looked like it was covered in mud or poop, and I eventually switched to a brush to smooth it out and add detail. Still like the look of well-made palette knife stuff and I sure got a new appreciation for this skill, but boy, do I never want to do that again. 😅 Kudos for sticking with it!!

I am struggling now too. I'm new to some of the art I'm trying and doubt is hindering my progress. I am sorry to see you struggling, but I appreciate that you shared because now I know even seasoned artists struggle too. Plus, your "fails" were still better than what I can do at the moment, especially the faces. I cannot do faces :/

I actually kind of like your last portrait that you worked so hard on. It was interesting to me to see how after you added a bunch of paint over her face, you used more natural skin tones to kind of bring back her face. I thought that was brilliant! Thanks!

Thanks so much for this Kattvalk! It's so nice hearing your honest experience with art struggles! I literally had this same problem this week with posting my video 😂 I ended up starting a different project for the video and I'm much happier with it now. It just helps to feel like we're not alone as artists, no matter our experience levels ❤️

When working with acrilics, you can easily add water to them and use them as watercolours. You don't need to apply a thick layer of paint with the knife if you' re not used to that. I paint with acrilics on canvas quite a lot, but i simply can't figure out how to use the knife

I usually add a lot of water to acrylics but apparently you shouldn’t do that to heavy body acrylic paints

I am a card maker, and I try to think of my failed cards as a learning opportunity. It is not easy, especially when you have a perfect picture in mind and it is just not appearing in real life, but we all have those days. Thank you for sharing your struggle.

Oh I have for sure had my share of art that is downright horrible and no one will ever see. :) Acrylics are kind of hard to get a hang for first-timers and trying to use something other than a brush isn't always the best way to go.

Lol..The last portrait turned out quit lovely..Reminds me of when I joined art classes a few years back to get back into painting etc ..Then I found instead of landscapes, flowers still lives etc ,the tutor expected us to copy Picasso ..Not my favourite artist..Then to make it worse to do it in oil pastels..Yep I felt like you doing this one..She thought my work looked amazing ..I thought it looked awful..At least you tried something different ..I have not touched the oil pastels since lol.

OMG, I feel your pain. I can't do ANYTHING with heavy body acrylics. The thick, sticky texture just does not work for me and I end up with gross muddy messes. You are not alone!

My lifemotto is "progress, not perfection" as long you keep going or keep trying you are on a good way! I am seeing a lot and sometimes I finish a garnment quickly and splendit and on some days I get annoyed by just cutting simple patterns. Thats part of the creative process and not every day everything tuns smoothly. But it always helps to try again a bit later 😊 Also I see the positive side of it: When it does not go well I try to learn from the things that went wrong
