This Brain Implant Could Change Lives

It sounds like science fiction: a device that can reconnect a paralyzed person’s brain to his or her body. But that’s exactly what the experimental NeuroLife system does. Developed by Battelle and Ohio State University, NeuroLife uses a brain implant, an algorithm and an electrode sleeve to give paralysis patients back control of their limbs. For Ian Burkhart, NeuroLife’s first test subject, the implications could be life-changing.

When people learn I have metastatic cancer they immediately think how horrible that is. But there are many things I think would be far worse to endure such as not being able to move about freely. I think people like Ian are superheroes because they are living under conditions I would consider torture. Dmitry you're probably correct. Gosh, what they're trying to do really is a marvel though. In their prime, their suit might become a second CNS, how cool would that be? Especially if the experience is super close to the real thing. I think there might be an even bigger application here (depending on your interests): inter-brain communication. The future is almost now :)

It really is a more complex matter than that, and it really depends on the kind of sensor grid they're using, they might actually be more interested in individual neuron potentials, or at least more localized field ones. Remember you only get waves when you observe a big population of neurons at once, and while it might be functionally related to something in particular this kind of view is still pretty limited. Deep nets might actually be a good alternative some day, but probably not right now since at this point in development it should be pretty hard to build a sufficient and well curated data set (as unsupervised models do not seem up to the task yet). Still this project sure sparks hope and excitement for future development and hopefully fosters future research in this field of application. And kind of replying to Dmitry, there's pretty good tools already to get rid of a very significant if not most of the noise in the acquired signals, I think the most challenging part might be in actual interpretation of the read signals (understanding inter-neuron dynamics and its direct effect on behaviour is no trivial task) and later on the generalization of these interpretations to other brains.

We already use Gene therapy in human tests today for select conditions such as a genetic condition that causes fluid build up in the lungs. They use a virus to alter the cells in the lung to stop producing excess fluid and they had some successes. Nanoparticles are being researched for use in medicine and may get used for some things though nano bots as you see them in movies are probably over 100 years off even with the pace of technolagy.

This is a start of something big. In time they'll be able to scale the transmitter down until it's hardly noticeable. The technology is similar to a cochlear implant for deafness in the way electrodes are used to bypass the damaged area. That sucks, having something just protruding out like that, must be uncomfortable at times. I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma just last year, and they put this "power port" inside of me. It was a direct route for my treatment to reach my tumor. It makes sleeping uncomfortable, its uncomfortable when people bump into it, its uncomfortable when I do physical activities. Idk what I hated more, getting poked in the arm by a needle or in the chest. I'm currently in remission and I'm waiting for them to remove this piece of plastic from my chest so that I can continue on with my life like normal again.

Hopefully they can incorporate Bluetooth tech so there won't need to be a huge wire sticking out of someone's head along with enough advancements to give back total control of the patients' limbs. With the necessary drugs doctors can help them completely recover so they can become independent without the implant.

All of that isnt required. Cut spinal cord completely (removing damaged area), reattach severed ends together leaving a 0.5mm gap between the two terminating ends, in the gap place high concentration stem cell gel, wrap exterior of severed spinal cord zone with neural growth factor transmembrane (to deliver neural growth factors for a duration of no less than 6 months), provide intravenous hGH 24 hr continous drip low dose for 3 month duration, provide spinal cord electrical stimulation to both sides of severed cord. Spinal cord will reattach and patient will regain full functioning is 3 to 6 months. Depending on location of spinal cord injury the above mentioned treatment may require patient to be on a 100% life support system until regrowth reconnects critical pathways.
