Hello dear Lumnah Family, I'm a 70 year old gramma in Florida and my favorite part of all the videos is seeing something that you or Gina dreamed and there it is, sitting on the garage floor, that is how I always worked(,dream than do). It's to late for me to start again but I can continue to watch and support you and your Beautiful family. God Bless your homestead and your family.♥️👍

Dear Gram, I also am 70 years old. For my birthday I went sledding down a steep hill followed closely by hot chocolate! It is never too late and, yes I am the grandmother of nine. I will be working on my kitchen and painting my house this Spring. And then there is gardening. I'm taking a class to up my skills there. Don't give up! Keep learning about the world, about people, about yourself!

It's never too l as the for a few back yard chickens. Never to late to grow some veggies. You may not have the space for the whole kit and caboodle but you cant still do some. Even in an apartment building. You could do container gardens. I have a HUGE yard, but I rent and my landlord will not allow us to start a garden in ground, so I'm going to be starting a container garden in the next week or so. I'm in us 4a so really cold just not as wet as Al and Gina got it over there in NC. But If I start my veggies inside and transplant I should have plenty time to grow what I want to grow. In this case I'm growing pickling cucumbers because I want to start small but I want my lessons to be more than just gardening... I've never grown my own veggies and I've never done any canning, so two birds one stone

Yes, we like hearing about you all. Used to homestead for years - now I'm retired and we live in a small house with minimal land. I do grow as many veggies as possible (container gardening). My children are now getting into the growing, homesteading so the traditions are being carried on. I remember there were times when everything on our diner table was what we produced. We raised our own meats - chicken, pork, beef. I traded eggs for raw milk and made our own butter etc. Now we live vicariously through you! Love it!

I'm sure you have plenty to teach as well. There are many many people looking into growing their own foods now. If you wanted to I'm sure you could start a workshop and help other people with their homesteading dreams with some hands on teaching. Personally I'd love that. My hubby and I are buying our land in the next 2-7 years, our goal is by our 10th wedding anniversary, were comming up on our 5th in 2 years and I think if we play our cards right we can start small on about 3 acres by than, and maybe move onto more land later down the line. But hes from a big city and I'm from a large town, neather of us have any hands on experience, and were looking for help or to help out others on their farms in this time but I dont knownifnwell ever feel ready to do it on our own.

@Kiara Keeper if at all possible try to get as much land as you can at the outset. Its a pain to move a complete homestead- you have 10 times the stuff of a normal household! Never mind moving tractors, discs, etc. we went-from 3/4 of an acre to 5, and we are still growing! Wish we had more land though. We can’t rotate pastures. And its very expensive to move.

I do some light vegetable gardening now and even though I would love to be able to go off grid I waited too late in life. I am 80 years old, spent the first 25 years of my life on a farm.(gardening ever since) but now have to be content with watching the younger generations carry on with my dreams. Good luck to all and I'll be watching your videos.

I would love to have a fully operational homestead. Unfortunately we are pretty late to the fun. My husband and I used to pride ourselves on being city slickers. But the older I get the more I realized I'm not impressed with the city anymore. I prefer to spend time with my grandchildren out in the garden or with the chickens. I love teaching them what I have learned. This year I want to plant berry bushes and maybe a couple of dwarf fruit trees. We don't have room for anything else. I love to can and make jam and jelly. I sell my jam at local farmers markets and locally owned and operated businesses. I quilt and sew other things and as much as I would love to homestead full time it just isn't feasible at this time. Thank you Al, Gina and Olivia for sharing your lives with us.

AL, Gina & Olivia - once I found you online I was hooked. Your family farm is very interesting. You all do your part to make your farm work for you. Your different projects are not only interesting but show how a farm home grows from one potato plant to a bunch (meaning ALL the projects including goats, chickens, & gardens). That is how the farm enriches itself into the future. Hard honest work is what farms and farmers are all about. I did not grow up on a farm but around them and the people who make up society. Without farms and farmers we would be cavemen or less. Anyway keep up your good life, work and share little bits of your inspirational life for of us who did not grow up as farmers but maybe wish we could have!

Hi, Al. Great question. So, I'm not currently homesteading but I plan to once I move back to the States. I very much enjoy watching you build things, it reminds me of my contracting days. One thing I miss about not being in the States is my shop. I used to be able to have an idea and a prototype on the same day. Now, I have to write it down and I'll try making it when I get tooled up again. Me and my family are currently in Guangzhou, China and I have another year and a half to go until we move back. I'm not sure where we are going to land, I could go to a colder climate, but I'm not sure my wife could take it. I'm learning as much as I can in the meantime. We're interested in raising chickens, pigs, goats, and more chickens. Why do I want to homestead? I've always wanted to homestead, but I thought it would be too difficult, but now I see a lot of people doing it and I believe I can do it too. I too have struggled with anxiety and that may be part of what held me back as a young man. Now that I'm older, I'm more able to focus and push through and I'm sure that I'll do well on my future homestead.

Thank you for sharing some of your story with us! I also used to suffer from extreme anxiety. I'm doing better with it now, but every now and then it comes back for very short duration's. I have often thought of making videos like you, only not for KZbin, but so my kids can someday look back at them. I think of how great it would be if I had video's like yours of my father and grandfather. But the dumb anxiety thing kicks in when I get close to doing it! lol! As far as getting into homesteading. My whole life I wanted to be a farmer. But I was thinking too big and gave up because I could never afford to buy land and equipment. Then one day it hit me. I may not be able to live my dream. But there is no reason that I can't do a much smaller scale and at least get some enjoyment from it. So 4 years ago I built a coop and got some chickens. I now raise egg layer, meat chickens, turkeys, and pigs. And I love every second of it!

I want to get more into homesteading for the mental health side of it. My husband lost his battle with mental health issues nearly 3 years ago. I’d always wanted chickens, and he’d always said no...so about a year after he died I got chickens (kind of on a whim, first thought to chickens home was about a month). I’ve always had a little garden but I expanded my gardening space as well. I began doing more research on gardening and found many homesteaders (including you) in the process. I noticed over time that the satisfaction of producing my own food significantly helped my depression. It gave me a sense of self sufficiency that I felt I lost when Jordan died and I needed to rely on others for help with my kids and home. Two years ago I started on meat birds, which I absolutely love. I can go to my freezer any time and have a home grown chicken dinner on the table that night. Our goal for hopefully within five years is to buy about two acres (so small, I know, but it’s what I’ll be able to afford) so we can have a few more animals and a bigger garden space. I don’t know exactly when it’ll happen, and I know it’ll add to my crazy workload, but my sons and I are so excited to be able to someday have land to farm on. One of our other goals is to grow enough to share with friends, family, and strangers.

I’m not into homesteading, but would love it. For me, my health is too poor to be able to be capable of it. I wish I could feel better with good food. I’m 53 have a heart defect, have had 2 Occipital Lobe strokes which have left me 50% blind. (No driving). I also have had major back surgery with big complications, 3 major elbow surgeries, and rheumatoid arthritis. I live through you guys. I’m originally from Leominster, MA. My grandparents had a homestead in Rangly, ME. I loved, loved, loved it. Thank you, to all three of you, for inviting me to tag along.

I would love to know more about your stories. I started because I was a 3 pack a day smoker and wanted to live healthier. Love homesteading

I was raised with milk cows, a few beef cows and milk goats. Grandma had the goats and chickens. We always had a garden. When I married we moved to hubby's family land, (been in his family since 1850) I couldn't see not raising animals. So, we have a herd of grass fed beef cattle, my milk goats, my chickens, bees, and the occasional pigs, and a garden. I also forage for wild fruit, grapes, plums, elderberries, persimmons. I can all my vegetables and fruit, jellies, juices etc. Been at it 30 plus years and loving it.

I love watching your videos and hearing about ya'll. I am bedroom bound for health reasons. I always loved gardening. Always wanted chickens but never was in a place to get them.; Lucky me, my daughter now has chickens. So watching and learning what I can to see if there is anything that could be of interest to my daughter. Plus, when it comes down to it I live vicariously through ya'll. You keep my life just that much better. Thanks for all you do to make these videos. Hugs and Prayers ya'll

P S Gina had a great thought , don't build it so big that you can't get it out of the work shop. Good thing that you have a beautiful smart wife.

I have been born and bred in London UK and my grandparents and g grandparents were too so this Homesteading stuff is fascinating for me.. I buy my food from a shop and never see how its processed and to be fair, I probably wouldn't want to know how my meat got to the shop! But watching you guys doing this is all new to me and I find it relaxing to watch. I love animals but have only ever sat on a horse and been led, so would not know what to do with any farm animal! In another life, I would love to do what you are doing but it will never happen so I live vicariously through you guys and am enjoying it very much.

Definitely we care about your lifestyle, it’s why we watch. Your entire family is an example we need to understand the importance of work ethic. My husband teaches special education and I’m a Children’s Pastor because we know it’s a calling. We make just a living wage but it’s a joy to do what we do.

Gina, keep watching you with mushrooms, try this, pull out center stem, now you got a mushroom cup, stuff with cream cheese, put on cookie sheet spread butter on bottom of sheet, bake 15-25 minutes, they are delicious..... I bake fresh (frozen thawed) fish on the same sheet and extra vegies... one last thing, liquid smoke (comes in a bottle) few drip on fish, also works with chicken.... mm-good... look forward every day to your videos....

The hopper style windows are used primarily for basements. So you can get the window up out. Of the way to pump out a basement or to feed supply down to basements.

Hi Al, you mentioned about the short garden growing season you have. You can grow vegetables year round, but there is a considerable amout of reading and learning first. Hydroponics would be the way to grow fresh vegetables yesr round. In fact if you were to have a heated building specifically for the hydroponics, you could incorporate a small bee hive inside to pollinate the flowers. Then keep the temps to growing seasons and be revolutionary in all the fresh vegies you want.

Hey Al! Thanks for sharing your story about anxiety. Like you, we are on our small scale farming and homesteading adventure because of health and our belief that the commercial food system is a mess. We work hard to help people better understand the importance of healthy foods. We subscribed to Weston a price last year. Their publications are full of info about how the right nutritional foods affect our bodies as well as our mental health.

Hey Al! I'm coming from Dedham, MA. on my way to northern Maine. I plan on modern steading just as yourself. I'm starting from raw land on 17 acres. With the long road ahead of me, my plan is to chop away at each project, finishing one thing at a time. Thanks for your inspirational videos. You are light years ahead of me and that's just perfect for me as I can use your vids as a learning tool. I too wish to grow and raise my own food. Again, thanks for sharing!

We always had dogs and cats growing up. I also grew up out in the country. So we wanted the same for our children. We are expanding our homestead with more animals this spring.

I live in a rural/suburban unincorporated area. I am a 76 yo retired woman. I don't enjoy TV at all, watch news in the morning but that's it. I love KZbin cause it is (some of it)entertaining, educational and fun. I grow a few flowers but that's it. I cook mainly from scratch. I make my own egg noodles too. My family never liked store bought noodles. There is a feral cat on our property..has been here for 9 years..we feed him and watch over him. We have lived in our current home for 2 years. Sold our home of 40+ years. Keep on keeping on..you are the last Video I watch in the day, cause i consider your video the "cherry on top of my sundae". Bless you, be safe.

I’d definitely love to hear more of your story! I’d also love to be homesteading. Unfortunately, I’m not physically able to do so alone and I don’t have any consistent help and I don’t have much space either. Like you once did I have terrible anxiety. I do container garden and I have a couple of small beds. I grow a few edibles here and there but my garden is mostly an herb/pollinator garden. I’m considering chickens but I’m not sure I should. Sometimes my anxiety makes it hard to do things even though I’m not totally physically disabled. I don’t want to overwhelm myself moreso than I already am. Maybe at some point🐓🙏🏻

I used to grow a garden. My wife and I planted purple hull peas every year along with tomatoes, peppers, and corn. I plowed and tilled the rows. We both planted the seeds and plants. I worked for a huge industrial company for 21 years. We never wanted to be off-grid. But we loved fresh food from the garden. Oh, we planted squash and cucumbers too. We put all we could in the freezer for the winter and gave away what we could not eat ourselves. I still have 2 bags of peas in the refrigerator and some squash from 3 years ago. My wife died last year and I cannot run the tiller anymore. But life goes on and I have plenty to eat and many friends. Life has been good.

We are what we eat & coupled with a lack of exercise it becomes overwhelmingly obvious! Kudos to U Al for sharing your personal experience with anxiety & how U deal with it... The windows U came back out with look like casement windows, typically used in a basement, however the windows won't know the difference where U intend to use them! I love the 6" Irwin clamps btw, I picked up a pair of them last week @ Lowes in Littleton & have used them numerous times already. It is a joy watching the little one, Olivia work with U guys in the kitchen... Bill on the Hill... :~)

We are going to live that way as soon as our house in Florida sells. We both grew up on farms in figure lakes. We are going to be half backs now. Plan is live in camper and build cabin. We will have goats for same reason as a friend of our live in that area and makes goats milk soaps and lotion. Will have chickens too. Can't wait to have work shop and land to do what we want. Wife misses seasons and cool weather. We do gardens now and she wants larger ones along with green house. Depending on what we buy land wise will determine if we do offgrid living too.

I’ve see many videos about vertical garden columns. The only modification I would make is raising them up from the dirt-level with legs, so it is still possible to plant under them. This hybrid planting method could increase productivity on a small size of garden.

U and your family are an inspiration I’ve down sized to a tiny apartment to get out of dept then save, I bought 10 acres on a private island in Nicaragua I’ve rented a small furnished house, while I build, with bills I pay 140 per month I’m trying to move to pay less. I’ve welded the house frame in steel it’s in parts so I can build at the site there’s no water no electricity I figured it all out we’ll see if it works. Thank u for opening ur lives to us Blessing

Thanks for sharing Al; yep, it's all about the Food! You can't buy food like this at any store! And I'm with you, the more I eat homegrown, home made, the better I feel, the more energy I have. And I so needed those reminders about it being a process and taking time!
