I didn't know this. UNTIL my son did this to his. I'm not (or wasn't) a reptile person. It took my son years to convince me to get him one. Well, one day this happened. He comes to me bawling his eyes out and his dragon has what looks to be snot coning out of it's mouth. It's completely limp and it's beard is black. My heart sank. Not only for the dragon, but my son wanted him for so long and had taken great care of him. I took Dart is his name, and wiped his mouth, put my mouth on his and gave him cpr. Yep, I never thought I would be there in that moment trying everything to save this little guys life. It was over 5 minutes of actively doing this. I thought he was gone so I sat him down. Tears are running down both of our faces. Then, Dart appears to have thrown up. Tons of water came out and he took a big breath. I started bawling in relief. We still have him now years later and he's now huge! My son tells all of his friends about it to this day whenever he shows him off. I'm now a reptile person.

Thank you so much for this. My bearded dragon would obsessively drink water and it caused a near death experience at least once. No vet could give me an answer on what was wrong or why he obsessively drank water in the baths, but they never told me to not disturb their drinking at all. I would sometimes try to remove them from the bath because I was worried he’d choke and die from drinking too much water and the near death experience only solidified that fear. How ironic. Edit: Yes, I googled it. When google had no clear results and said that obsessive drinking could be caused by anything from acute dehydration, parasites, disease, etc I took it into my vet for an earlier than usual yearly wellness exam and fecal expressing those concerns and presenting video evidence to the YES reptile specializing vet. This vet works with others at that clinic and has seen patients from the local zoo. Please stop assuming that I didn’t bother to do research or that these vets were trash. I also presented footage of a head tremor in my beardie and the vet went above and beyond to share that footage with even distant fellow vets to try and figure out what could be causing it. I no longer live in that area and thus don’t see that vet anymore but assuming all that from a youtube comment I made thanking OP for making such a useful educational video isn’t helpful to anyone. Cheers and have a good one, y’all.

This is such a good example of why pets - especially exotic pets - need an absolute TON of research before taking them on. It drives me crazy to see people take on creatures with more complex needs without adequate research. I've never heard this before. I've never had any reptiles but really appreciate the education, hopefully this will save someone's dragon one day. Thank you. I personally have rabbits, have had them for 20+yrs and what a lot of people don't realise that they are also considered exotic pets with *very* complex care needs. They can also die from having a bath, albeit for very different reasons (it can send them into shock) and should never ever be bathed. But so many people don't know this or ignore it. Many have killed their rabbits this way. It's so incredibly sad and entirely preventable. Thank you again for the video, I'll pass this on if I ever know of anyone getting a bearded dragon

Wild European rabbits _can_ swim, though, if they have to (across a river, for example, to flee from a predator) and they won't keel over dead from getting wet in rain, although of course they prefer to be down in their warren in a rainstorm (like any of us would). The problem with domesticated rabbits is simply the risk of hypothermia as their fur soaks through. The endangered North-American marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris), a cottontail rabbit, is a strong swimmer and lives in swamps and near rivers and bodies of water, from Virginia to the Florida Keys. So is the swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus), which is found in the south-central United States and along the Gulf Coast and prefers to live in lowland wetlands, marshes, floodplains and along river tributaries. They're not domesticated though.

One of the most dangerous things about rabbits and water is that they don't have a way to drain water out of their ears, so they get ear infections really easy. If a human has water in their ears for too long, It can leak out of the other holes on your head. Your nose, eyes etc. Rabbits don't have that They can swim but that doesn't mean that it's not dangerous for them

They only gulp like that if they're super dehydrated or parched. Their environment should be misted every morning and evening so they can lick the dew from their surrounding environment. They're desert animals and aren't accustomed to drinking standing water. But should always have access to some water in their tanks. As long as it doesn't cause the air in their tank to become too humid. They also get hydration from leafy greens, which should be a part of their daily diet.

When I put him in his tank he went faced down and was lifeless. I was crushed so I put him on his back and lightly pressed on his lungs a few times and blew air into hi s mouth for close to a minute and water poured out of his mouth and he started breathing again. IT HAPPENED TO ME! I put my bearded dragon in his bath. He IMMEDIATELY started drinking water like there is no tomorrow. He started closing his eyes and I freaked out thinking he couldn't breathe and he was drowning or something, so I picked him up quickly. HUGE MISTAKE. He suddenly went limp and stopped responding to anything, he wouldn't breathe and he looked like dead to me. I panicked and forced his mouth open (gently) and only god knows the massive amount of water that he had in there. So I took several pieces of toilet paper and started sucking all the excess water from his mouth as quickly as I could. I also GENTLY pressed him in an attempt to remove water from his lungs or something (I mean, at this point he was already dead you know). IT FREAKING WORKED. He started breathing again and responding. I almost had a heart attack. I mean I knew bathing them was good for pooping, only this time the one who shat himself was me.
