Something as small detailed as Anakin having long hair in Revenge of the Sith goes far beyond just looks. George Lucas wanted him to look like Qui-Gon Jinn, like the father figure he was supposed to have. I love this. It adds so much more to just Anakin whenever we see him next.

At one point the Rebels show there's a Holocron that Anakin made, and I kinda wish there were more things like that, where they show that he was also teaching even though he wasn't granted a "master" rank. I kinda feel like that's the difference between him just being a Jedi Knight versus a master the fact that he wasnt just teaching Ahsoka and in that way he was trying to grow beyond the expectations of the council. Which probably would demonstrate even more so how devastating losing his Padawan was.

I was thinking about Padme in episode 3 and how she’s less ballsy, she’s SUPER pregnant. At least 8 months pregnant. Pregnancy changes everything. She’s exhausted because all her energy goes to growing the babies and carrying their weight and all the changes and stress her internal organs have to go through just to fit the babies inside her body. Her hormones are fluctuating and she’s in the instinctual nesting period- getting her home and family ready for the baby to be born. Her priorities have changed, she’s a mother now, she’s protecting her baby, trying to save her husband. Anakin is everything to her. On top of all this the republic is falling apart and liberty dies, incredible stress and sorrow and fear. It would have been bad ass to see her with a knife but I can understand why she would do everything in her power to keep her family from falling apart.

I already loved how Anakin was portrayed in Clone Wars, but this does indeed add a whole other layer of S A D to him. I personally think him growing his hair out as long as it is already is kind of a tribute but hearing this as confirmation is nice too. He never forgot Jinn. I think that shows in how he taught Ahsoka-unlike with Obi-Wan, he and Ahsoka Tano became so close, brother and sister. Anakin became close with Captain Rex. They're the best parts of Anakin-they're his legacy. I think if Qui-Gon had lived, he would've helped make sure that Anakin forge these connections, while teaching Anakin that death is a part of life; losing his mother is really the tipping point for Anakin "I'm even going to stop people from dying." the poor boy is like Strange Supreme; he couldn't accept death as part of the Plan. I think if Jinn had lived, we would've seen a very different Anakin Skywalker. Powerful, yet in control, Attached, but not overprotective, or paranoid of loss. Emotional, but not overly so. I think we'd even see him use both the Light, and the Dark. Perfectly balanced. As all things should be.
@Eduardo-ll7eg

The problem with using both Light and Dark is that it simply doesn't work. That would imply using your hatred and rage for at least half the things you do, which can never be good. Revan tried that and failed. Even Dooku, to an extent, irrelevant though he largely was. The correct thing to do is to acknowledge your dark aspects and conquer them, using what darkness there is in you for good- just as Yoda did on Korriban and as Luke did in the EU. That is not using the dark side; it's turning dark into light.

I remember how much other fans would complain about how Qui-Gon Jinn’s existence contradicted Ben Kenobis statement saying that Yoda trained him, but when you dig deeper into Lucas’s intentions with adding certain things like Jinn you realize how Lucas literally didn’t care about logical contradiction as long as it served the characters and story well in the prequels.

I know it's sort of become this weird thing off saying this next star wars project needs to kick ass, but when it comes to the Kenobi series, it needs to surpass everything that has come out before. It needs to because this is a huge defining moment of the star wars we know and love. You made a job about talking about star wars?.. honestly amazing! - love this channel! I somehow keep learning new things that kinda gives me that spark I had when I first fell in love with the world (galaxy). Watching this gave me that same eye opening through the prequels, the same way when Dave Filoni gave his take on duel of the fates. amazing insights - cant wait to see what else you have in store

Hey Star Wars Theory, I just want to say that I enjoy your videos and I like the information you provide with covering the history of Star Wars. I have gotten back into a Star Wars after seeing the Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. I would like you to know I am one of those fans that just loves everything Star Wars. Your videos have encouraged me to go out and read other novels along with encouragement from my older brother to read the Darth Bane Trilogy and the Rise of Darth Vader. Your videos have also inspired me to write my own Star Wars story one day. I hope you have a great day and thank you for all your Star Wars history and lore videos.

That’s really cool symbolism. It adds depth to Obi-Wan’s and Anakin’s relationship at the time. Their dynamic was definitely older and younger brother. They were great friends, but they had a rivalry going on as while Anakin was very powerful, Obi-Wan was praised as being the ideal Jedi. Anakin and Obi-Wan both wanted to live up to Qui-Gon’s legacy. Anakin definitely had some jealous feelings towards how calm and collected Obi-Wan was. Count Dooku capitalizes on this in the Clone Wars series too. Multiple fights they have leaves Anakin as the victor, but Count Dooku will praise Obi-Wan’s skill while undermining Anakin’s abilities. It definitely made Anakin hold more of a grudge against Dooku for not only cutting his hand off, but refusing to acknowledge his strength. The perfect mind game that made Anakin harbor jealous feelings for Obi-Wan.

This is awesome, really appreciate stuff like this. But ah! On the topic of Padmé you’re right, they made her more docile and it’s just a bit unfortunate because she can actually be extremely creative and calculating, and very capable of taking care of herself. That’s why I love her books by E.K. Johnston (not written in the best way even for a YA) but it still managed to capture her character in such a unique way; like mastering the economy, the structure of government and diplomacy, agriculture, weaponry, how her handmaidens helped build her into a competent and strong Queen at 14 snd well into her Senator years, like that all adds up and falls short on her film depiction for some reason. Like she’s not frail, there’s reason why Leia’s an intelligent leader and can handle herself too. Great video! Love stuff like this!

I have some thoughts. First off, it's really cool how Anakin's character was said to have grown his hair long to pay homage to Qui-Gon, his adoptive father with whom he had kind of a Joseph/Jesus dynamic, and also to symbolize his aspirations to defy the Jedi council by delving deeper into the ways of the force. It's also cool how they prepared Ewan's look in Revenge Of The Sith as Obi-Wan to resemble Ben's in the original trilogy. When it comes to Padme though, I wouldn't say that she was weak and flimsy as time went along, but rather that her strength had been redirected from her political interests to her love for Anakin. It took her being really strong to manage her political career while hiding her marriage from the public and carrying the baby of her troubled Jedi husband while the republic she had fought long and hard to sustain was falling apart rapidly and chaotically, and in the midst of all that not break down but confront Anakin and strive to keep him from falling to the dark side not knowing how volatile the meeting would be but yet not too scared to risk it. Btw, from my point of view, Anakin didn't fall to the dark side when he first surrendered to Palpatine because what led to that was years of deception and abuse from the Jedi council who never treated him as one of their own and who intentionally held him back out of fear and jealousy in addition to Windu intending to blatantly violate the 'Jedi Way' by executing Palpatine in front of Anakin when he should've rightfully arrested him and let him face trial. Anakin had reaons other than wanting to rule the galaxy for why he came under the tutelage of Palpatine, whom I believe he wanted to eventually overthrow so that he could rule alongside Padme and in that way 'Bring balance to the force.' To me, Anakin was seduced by the dark side when he let his lust for power in order to save Padme overcome his love for Padme and their child when she disagreed with him and then he force choked her much like Palpatine who betrayed everyone who showed loyalty to him in order to attain greater power. So Anakin wasn't a monster. He was more like a neglected, abused and troubled child who never got raised rightly but yet grew up to be a man who didn't know who he could trust and who felt like everything was out of his control, when truly it was, and the one time he tried to take his life into his own hands he grasped too hard and fell over the edge. And Padme is actually one of if the not the strongest Star Wars character because she, unlike everyone else, did was she did out of love while maintaining her morals knowing the whole time that it may cost her everything. While it may have cost her life, she did the right thing in the long run because her son with her forbidden lover would end up winning his father back to where he belonged and saving the republic following in his mother's footsteps only with a lightsabre and the force. To anyone who may read this comment, I appreciate it. As you may tell, I'm really enthusiastic about and inspired by this great tale, and obviously I'm greatly anticipating the series of my favorite Jedi of all-time Obi-Wan Kenobi. May Ewan and Disney do this justice.

Yeah that's a good take. Growing up though I always pictured Anakin as being sort of a Han Solo type but with force powers rather than what was shown. Over the years I guess its grown on me though but still.
@phieble
@phieble 2 жыл бұрын
@@HextimusDuex Idk. Han Solo is a character that never truly resonated with me. He was self-centered, arrogant, unreasonably skeptical about the force and its users, sometimes reckless, and annoying, especially when it came to his relationship with Leia, which to me was more forced and inauthentic as people say Anakin's and Padme's is, which I diasgree with. Anakin fell in love with Padme because she was beautiful like an angel, obviously and unbeknownst to some, she reminded him of his mother in some ways when it came to having a strong moral code, being encouraging, and sticking up for what she believed in, plus he felt protective of her and felt comfortable around her when his advances weren't declined and he wasn't tortured by nightmares of her death, because she believed in him. Padme fell in love with him, despite the maybe 7-10 age difference because he was candid and strong-willed as she was, she respected his loyalty to the force and his work as a Jedi, and because he was adventurous and a sort of escape from the hectic political sphere where she could open up, let her guard down, and be herself without being demeaned as a woman, plus he had matured quickly and was attractive to her. With Han and Leia, I don't know what Han liked about Leia other than her looks because she constantly criticized him and he didn't care about the rebel cause or the force but did pretty much everything he did in order to gain money to take to Jabba to pay off his debt and to stroke his ego with rewards. I don't know what Leia liked about Han other than his competence with flying the Falcon and his leadership tendencies which I suppose is a redeeming quality, but even that's only because he was too arrogant to listen to anyone even force senstive people like Ben and Luke both of who were more mature and effective in the cause than he was. The way these two are pushed into a romantic relationship and the dialogue and behavior between them is just as weird and cringy to me as people say about Anakin amd Padme who at least showed some interest in each other and went on dates leading up to the climax where Padme professes to love Anakin back thinking that they'll both be killed. He came on a bit strong, but nobody ever taught him how to talk and behave properly when approaching girls romantically, he was forcibly seperated from his mom for years without any real father, and his "I don't like sand," line is not weird to me. Indeed it is course and it annoying gets everywhere in addition to reminding him of the land of he and his mother's slavery and those dreaded brutish sand people. Long spill, but, yeah, that's my tangent.

Love these insight videos ! Keep them up. I enjoy these more open discussion topics like this as it's always interesting to hear your thoughts. At 3:38 you talk about how in the concept art it showed Padme bringing a weapon to kill Anakin. This is one of those things I'm glad George didn't proceed with. Not only do I think it's important that Padme continued to love Anakin (it's that love that saves Luke) but it's the only thing that never changed about his character even after years of giving himself to the dark side. He may have been selfish but the breadcrumb trail you can follow across the series is a wonder to behold. Follow it with me. After Anakin tells Obi-Wan that from his point of view the Jedi are evil, Padme in her final moments tells Obi-Wan "There's good in him, I know", but at this point Obi-Wan feels betrayed having just fought Anakin in battle. He then watches over Luke, and while placing him on his path to become a Jedi, tells Luke that Darth Vader "betrayed and murdered" Anakin, thus almost mirroring Anakin's betrayal at Mustafar because from his point of view the good in Anakin is destroyed and he believes it's Lukes destiny to defeat Anakin. It's then Luke that once again confirms this with Obi-Wan, "There is still good in him". Obi-Wan disputes Luke on this saying Anakin is now twisted and evil. We know that Luke then takes this message, Padme's final message, to Anakin in their meeting in RotJ: "I know there's good in you". It is at this point that we get the first mention of Anakin's inner conflict. It is Padme's final message that spurs Anakin to move to save his son and we find out by Anakin's own admission that Luke was right. If Padme attempts to kill Anakin with a knife, then she would have either given up on Anakin or betrayed him, both having the disastrous effect of leaving Anakin with no good in him when Luke comes around (assuming he'd still be born if Anakin would have responded in a more... physical way like in the picture shown). I know sometimes it feels like some of the original Lucas films could have been cooler if something else would have happened... but Lucas really did love these films, these stories, and these characters and I think he got them just right in a lot of ways. More right than people give him credit for.

I like that the analysis gets deep, however I do feel deep inside that longer hair for the male jedi could have been associated with letting the force dictate their will whereas shorter hair / bald styles was intended to be more militant. Think "combat hippie" vs "military brat" if that helps. Awesome vid, thanks SWT!

Hey Theory. I love this book!!! Man I totally agree what George had to say about Anakin having long hair. I always assume it would mirror Vader's helmet. But when looking at this book many years ago I just love what George really says in full detail to every character. For Anakin looking like Qui-Gon with the long hair is actually incredible and make a lot of sense as both of them were Jedi that went beyond the teachings of the Jedi themselves. And that is what's incredible about these art books. Hope you have a wonderful time Theory and I'll catch you soon and remember may the Force be with you.....always..

So hard to have a favorite sw character. And ranking them, at least for me, is near impossible. Kudos for at least listing a top 3. You really do have to have categories and even then ranking is hard. Obviously Quigon is one, as well as Luke and Obiwan. But then there's CW Anakin, Yoda, Ahsoka, and even Ezra (who I initially didn't think would become a favorite, but his arc is so compelling). And that's just Jedi characters, not including villains, bounty hunters, clones, etc, for which there is no shortage of. Just truly a testament to the diversity of developed characters in Starwars as a whole. There is always an interesting character for someone to be drawn to no matter what. The Starwars Guarantee. May the Force be with Filoni and Favreau as they usher in the Golden Age of Starwars.

Many also noted that they applauded George for seeing that Hayden needed to be comfortable with the hair as well to better portray anakin.

The biggest mistake people make when they malign the prequels is that the detail, the character arcs, the development is there, it's just that the clone wars happened in between episode 2 and 3 and we didn't see that on the big screen. With that context Anakins shift makes alot of sense. It always has. It's a tragic tale of a genius who had the potential to be the greatest force user in history, but due to his impatience and fear because of Padme and his children he tried to grasp to much power to quickly and destroyed himself in the process. It's actually an excellent story. Much better than Mary Sue...Rey.

I get the whole design language of those movies, and it makes some sense when you see it in print like that. To me the long hair was just another visual cue that Anakin was rebellious and preferred doing things his own way, so to see it meant something else does make some sense in the context of Star Wars. I never really made the connection, though. In many ways we see him moving away from the Jedi teachings more in the Clone Wars, and that it wasn’t a quick thing. He was at odds with the way the Jedi conducted the war. He’s a much more approachable character in animation, I have to say. Palpatine plays the poor kid like a fiddle all they way through episode 3 and 4. He stood no chance.

The jedi went wrong for teaching him slowly. That's what u do. If a kid has miraculous marksmanship talent. U don't have him going thru Ranger sniping school and hand him a .50 cal and go ham. Give him a pellet gun. Teach him the basics and move up as they get better and more mature. So they are able to control and use their talents effectively. Ya he could do more than what he was taught. But he proved he wasn't ready or anywhere near mature enough to tackle that yet.
