Eamon please read! I am a licensed contractor, building houses for over four decades,. Your deck is not built properly and is potentially dangerous! You need steel joist hangers, lag bolts, blocking, steel X bracing, posts should not be set directly into concrete, proper spans. The ledger attached to house should have stand offs, lags and flashing, it will start rotting next year if not done properly! Building a deck flush with interior floor allows snow, ice and rain to migrate to the interior. I don't mind if people not pull permits and have inspections, however codes are there for good life safety reasons! At least build to code! We don't want to see you, your family and friends get hurt! Slow down Eamon! Faster is not better! Do more research!, find people to help, that don't just know slightly more than you... Please fix as soon as possible! All the best!

Lot's of people tends to reproduce what they see on KZbin, and thank god, people like you notice these things to help avoid reproducing it.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr, remember Canadian Winters when I spend 7 months in BC up in the Purcell mountains out of Radium. I could write a book about my experiences there maybe someday I will, But but when the temp hit 35 below in mid December, I hitched back to Idaho in a snowstorm. I wasn't equipped to deal with that kind of cold. But I LOVED Canada. I was planning to go back, but due to tragic deaths of 2 good friends up there the next Spring, I didn't have the heart for it. My neighbor made the mistake of starting a brush fire without learning all the leaves, like you did and he set the surrounding leaves on fire which then burned down his woods and made it to our property line before the fire department could knock down enough trees to prevent the spread to our forest. So my point be careful and clear the area well before starting your fires.

I’m enjoying your cabin life. I live on a lake in Northern Ontario and would strongly recommend getting a generator-the Jackery unit looks excellent, but will not be able to run your furnace fan. When the power goes out in my area, all the year round residence on the lake fire up their generators. You can get a propane fuel generator and connected it to your propane supply. The most interesting (extreme actually) thing you guys are doing is trying to live in a three season cottage over the winter. I know you will succeed, but it is actually a difficult challenge. One of the most uncomfortable things that can happen is a frozen waterline and pipes. Are you on well water or lake?

Shoreline hills expose layered sediments, including peat moss. Starting a fire there could start an underground peat moss fire that could spread slowly to your cabin over a period of days. FYI.
