The map idea at 11:10 would be so awesome to have as an unlockable upgrade to the compass in every vault. It wouldn't even have to highlight rooms, just show where the player is in relation to the start room. Even with the compass, I often find myself going in circles and going back in rooms I've already visited, and the map would be a clean fix to this.

Yes, please scrap the floor map idea or add it as a side thing, the meta would just be to do a screenshot and have a second monitor, would just be a more inconvenient map

I'v been forced to cheat and add journey map to the pack. I used to either die or pauze at every room change and draw a map by hand. Now that I play on a server I can't pauze. To avoid seeing rooms in advance I remove the minimap and put my render distance super low. I can open the current vaults maps and see where I have beem without seeing rooms I haven't been in, most of the time..

@@cambria9893 why not just run in a straight line and then turn when you get to the end? That way the compass always tells you where to go and you can't get lost

just started my first vault hunters playthrough and im feeling it so far Edit: I commented this before watching the video and i have this on in the background while playing VH and i was literally just talking about how hard it is to get modifiers at low level. great update :)

Should also put some catalysts in vendoors. I got to a point where I never needed anything from them. But this would keep them viable for longer.

Whole uninfused catalysts are actually already in vendoors right now. But I 100% think they will be more valuable in vendoors after this update cause you can buy specific ones

idea for the collapsing vault - on generating a bunch of blocks exposed to air in each room will be marked as "fragile" and when player is in the room/corridor each has a random chance each tick (so linked to randomTickChance) to gain sand physics, actively collapsing. would require some good optimizing to minimalize lag, but would make the challenge way more unique, with the room actively changing and falling blocks being able to mess up any towering up, staircases and obscuring vision as they fall

This is what I thought he meant at first! Just every X ticks (with randomization) a random block in currently "active" rooms gain physics and drop down. Would also think it'd be cool if more frequently blocks "crumbled" away (IE they just break) but focusing more on blocks that make up the actual rooms layout so gradually getting around a room becomes trickier with more pitfalls and missing routes.

Regarding the Map inside the Entrance Room for Inscription Rooms (and I already wrote that in the update-talk channel in the VH Discord): Wouldn't it make more sense to have the location weights based on the amount of rooms you have to traverse from the entrance instead of based on "rings" around the entrance room? Considering that the room directly "behind" the entrance is 5 rooms away for the player, while the room that is in a direct line from the entrance is closer (like, if the Entrance is facing North, and you go 4 Rooms to the north, you only need to traverse 4 Rooms, but with your ring model, it would be in the ring with the lowest weight when it's actually closer to you than the room directly behind the entrance that, in the ring model, has the highest weight). Seems to me that "Travel-Distance from Entrance" would be a better metric (so highest weight would be 2-3 Rooms from the entrance, next weight would be 4-5 rooms from the entrance, next 6-7 and the last one everything else). That seems to be far more fitting imho, since the Entrance only connects to the rest of the vault to one side (it would be different if it were open to all 4 sides, then the rings would make sense, but as that is not the case, the rings are imho not a good idea).

The proposed map for inscriptions would make a huge difference for me - the odds of not finding a room mean I don't feel comfortable in the early game using inscriptions, despite their real benefit early on. I think you've come up with a decent balance to making rooms findable versus not making them too straightforward. I also absolutely love the idea of custom inscription-only rooms - I really miss some of the classic VH2 room designs, for example, but they wouldn't fit in with regular vaults in VH3.

Sounds super cool, nice to see all the progress you've made! The map idea is awesome, I hope you're able to implement it like that. for the special forge room, I think the drawback to upgrading can be as simple as just using up a repair slot for the gear piece, maybe all of the remaining repair slots. There would have to be a material cost as well of course, but I think having a very limited amount of durability left for the item is a decent enough drawback. Making it one piece only per room also sounds good, and that the same piece can't be upgraded twice, like from 25 to 50 then 50 to 75, etc.

IMO, the number of curses should be based on the amount of capacity over the limit, not the number of items over the capacity. So like a 10 capacity crystal with 2 5 capacity things and a 10 capacity thing should give the same number of curses regardless of what order you put them on it in the table

Suggestion, consider allowing using the starting map to bind compasses to the actual room for the navigationally challenged.

The Fear shield could be called Medusa or something similar, because it’s kind of like Athena’a shield in Greek mythology.

Would you ever consider overhauling the overworld of Vault Hunters in the future? Maybe with custom structures that generate e.g. castles or custom villages and NPCs that give side quests? There could also be certain vaults that are given with a specific quest that you get from an NPC

If there was a seal or capstone for a "practice" vault that may be useful for a new player to figure out how this feature works. This would provide no loot but would not use any of your catalysts etc. I believe this would be useful to not only learn how this function works but also to look at rooms you may have not seen yet as an early starter.

When vault hunters switched to 1.18 and i finally started playing it, it was sad to see how unmodified vaults did not have as many random modifiers anymore, and i was always scared to put recources into catalysts. Now this will give me all the confidence i need to modify my vaults

Not meaning to crush your hopes, but implementing the floor-map would be impossible in the current system. In order to generate the structure of the map, first the locations of the special rooms must be known. So a map can be made based on that. However, the start room is the first room to generate! So, at that time you cannot know the layout of the rooms. One would have to rewrite the entire vault gen engine to make this work. Eg. you could generate a "blueprint" before generating the rooms themselves. Or maybe you could generate a structure in the first room afterwards(that sounds even harder). Or invert the order of the generation, so the start room would generate last. I'm no expert on this matter, but i've done a fair bit of programming (in highschool, at IT faculty). Correct me if i'm wrong on these.

I thing a way to do the rings is the inscriptions goes around every room in sort of an outwards spiral with a set chance (kinda like a 1/16) and if it rolls then its placed ther and if it doesn't it goes to the next room and rolls again (only rolling for normal rooms). This organically makes the rooms appear closer and, if someone puts a lot of inscriptions in a crystal a lot of rooms would get skipped and they will just appear way further. if you are concerned about that mearly impossible chance that you only insert one inscription and it appears super far, you could cap the first few crystals to the map zone and, to not make some spaces more likely than others, i'd make it choose a random spot in the first ring as the origin for every vault :)

Hallo, iskall! Loving ALL of the content recently, and can't wait for more and more content will keep bringing me back to the game over and over again. I do have an idea for vault objectives (although I know you guys have a lot on your plate right now) that might add a really interesting layer to the game that fits into crystal modifying. What if you could make a crystal with MULTIPLE OBJECTIVES? For example combining cake and scavenger together would cause players to have to multitask between finding their items and unlocking new rooms, which could feel really good if you get the balance right. Even combining scavenger and elixir could be a huge risk because elixir might want you to fight mobs but scav wants you to loot commons. This idea will require a lot of balancing, tweaking and inventing on your part but I believe it would enchance both gameplay and crystal creation so much. Just an idea, and congrats on an awesome game!

I feel like this is what god altars are good for! Having a secondary objective that is sometimes opposite the main objective to add a big challenge.

@@anonymousyoutubeviewer1394 I agree, except for the fact that you don't have a choice in what god altar challenge you get, and the consequence for failure isn't as bad. Also, god altar objectives are very SIMPLE, and in my opinion, arent as satisfying as completing an intense vault run. Good point tho!

@@brqkenGood points! I guess one simple answer to this is to increase vault difficulty to make the single objective more challenging? I just now realized that I rarely feel challenged in vaults now that I am level 100 and probably should play on hard difficulty instead of normal, so maybe this just applies to me!

@@anonymousyoutubeviewer1394 Definitely play on hard if you are finding it too easy. Some mechanics only start on hard mode such as guaranteed champ abilities and dwellers throwing bricks.

with the capacity on the crystals increasing with level I love that from game design cause its another reason to encourage you to run at your own level or the highest level your friend can run. Limiting it to only 10 catalysts without curses at level 100... I guess if that's the balance you're going for then fair enough but maybe if its not already a consideration, consider greed levels allowing you to raise that capacity even further?

Take the map floor and make it be a talent you can upgrade to expand the size of the map scanning for omega rooms. Give people the ability to hunt for the rooms they want, or help to find their inscriptions

Love how the update is looking so far! Getting a new PC soon (partly to play this vaulthunters) so I'm very excited to see these changes. One thing I thought might make more sense after following you for a while and wanting the game to feel less numbery, why not make the size of a catalyst just 1 and then there's a chance to find 0 size crystals in vaults? (then crystals can have 10 catalyst capacity per 10 levels) Otherwise you're keeping more maths which seemed to be part of the problem with previous catalysts. Big love to you and the team! Cheers

Serious question: What is the point of the Capstone item causing the Crystal to be "unmodifiable"? considering that you're now applying everything at the same time, similar to how you do it with the Jewel Applicator for the Vault Tools, it seems to me that the "unmodifiable" of the "Capstone"-Items are a relic of the past and have no reason to exist anymore. You're applying everything at the same time, have a predefined "Capacity" to use up with everything having a predefined "Size" that use up the capacity, creating curses for every additional Catalyst/Inscription that is added past the Capacity limit. So what point does the "unmodifiable" modifier have now? Imho it could be removed and nothing would change, as you would just apply it last all the time (as there is no sequential adding to the crystal anymore, where every step can cause it to be unmodifiable).

Love these changes. Now that architect vaults are gone, I would love to see (some day, not right away, you've got a lot cooking already, hahah) the return of the build-a-vault from 1.16. I know they were targeted at streamers, with the audience voting on which rooms to add, but it was still a ton of fun solo trading time for better rooms, or purposely taking bad rooms to add more time in case you got a good room eventually. Looking forward to u14!

As someone who started vault hunters recently, one of the most frustrating things for me was to find my first chromatic iron vein. Maybe you could have cartographers sell a map of where to find one vein so that we at least have one guaranteed way of finding them. (I’ve given up on a couple of seeds because I couldn’t find chromatic iron)

I love the starting-room map idea, and I wonder if it would be unbalanced to have an expensive-to-craft crystal modifier (kind of like Plunderer's Pearls) that gives you a similar map but for the randomly generated omega rooms that the vault naturally creates. I understand the removal of Journey Map to avoid easy vault navigation but I abused the heck out of that to speedrun omegas -- particularly in raw vaults for Nether rooms. re: Removing the Vault Crystal recipe The only thing it hurts is now you are not required to find both Vault Stone and Chromatic Iron naturally before entering your first vault.

Love these updates and the dev journal kind of thing he's doing here. The news about Bisecthosting is pretty awesome. I love hearing when people can get consistent income, especially with passion projects and work they enjoy. It's beautiful what I've seen become possible for people because of vault hunters.

Im currently playing VH 2 with some friends right now (our server host didnt have V3 when we started it) but we want to eventually play V3 and seeing whats in store for us when we get to it is REALLY cool! I love the changes between VH2 and VH3, sooo many good quality of life changes and unique things to make it so you can tailor your kit to your personal playstyle. I'm excited!!!

In the arcane anvil, you should consider some icon behind where you put the catalysts and inscriptions because, unlike the rest of the slots, it's hard to know what goes in there

Proposal: map room is a room subtype (spread throughout the vault). Start room is always a map room. Maps are always relative to position, centered on current location (every map would be distinct). Inscription room are always on the map (when in range). Omega rooms have a very low chance to be revealed on a map. Have fun with whatever other objectives warrant a map roll. 😊

It would be cool to have a guinto design the vault. Like you throw a crystal in the center and slot inscriptions I'm slots around it to build your vault.

Rerolling the unique item lvls could eat repair slots and cost gold, so if you have a lvl 25 unique chestplate, and it has 3 repair slots with 500 dura, then if you upgrade it you get left with 2 slots. then if you still keep using it later and need to upgrade again but you had to repair it from durability damage and only have the one repair slot then you cant up the lvl. this could be done at one of those unique "inscriptions" like you said; not craftable, but gotten out of lvl 50+ strongboxes

new objective: have some unique items hidden in some specific rooms of the vault (not in chests, they would be on special poi's or floating open in the air) mark those rooms at the map in the beginning u have to collect them all and bring them back to the portal to get completion

Ideally you should center the inscription probability rings on the first room you enter, not the portal room, because the room behind the portal is 5 rooms away with the same odds as the first room.

The Catalysts look AMAZING! cant wait to see the new block texture too! super exciting update, great work to you and your team! question: will existing catalysts be usable through the update or should I use them all before I do that for my single player playthrough?

Just wait for people to gripe if they don’t have a phone to take a snapshot of their monitor with. The thing about having the original math that you suggested is it did put an X on mark on where you are later in the vault to help people figure out where the entrance is, I think I would’ve liked that

If for some reason you have an excess of item models, or some don't fit, that could be a fun way to add a new unlock (kinda like with getting the new tech). I always wondered how rare a transmog unlock would be, or what it would it would be like to submit a voxel model to a server to be added into the loot table.

I'm excited for the update, I've just hit level 90 for the first time in my single player and running vaults is still so much fun. I think once you get the unique item (example the jester hat) you can transmog any helmet to look like that, it just won't have the bonus. Cosmetic stuff should always be cosmetic and not locked to a prefix or the like. The map room is a great idea, I hope that gets implemented in some way, if not on the floor then maybe an actual map given to the player when they enter the vault, or both?

You could make the recipes for the cake and chaos crystal have harder recipes, or maybe a different item pool, if you want to add extra difficulty to entering these vaults!

iskall if i might suggest an idea for curses? Flooding, the more you have of this curse the more water in in the vualt, its not too bad but it will hinder flying a bit and make some areas annoying for players. So it replaces blocks with water source blocks, maybe each one adding, 5-10% more water per curse, could even have a lava one if you want to be evil to so the same called Burning or melting

love the map idea... i don't think that the ceiling is used for anything yet, and there is a bit more space there in case you decide that a skill or modifier could scan the area around and mark interesting rooms other than the inscribed ones how would the forge upgrade room affect the durability of the equipment... would it be like a reforge with similar (but upgraded stats) and reset durability and repairs or just a simple rebalancing of the stats with maybe just a percental adjustment to the durability... and if it is the second case is there any more need for a further downside?

I LOVE VH, I have replayed this pack from 0-100 9 times and it still feels just as exciting to me, one thing I would suggest though is after the capacity is maxed make it have a CHANCE to curse, not have it curse every time, because I can tell you, on my server and probably every other server, no one is going to add more than the capacity ( least not on purpose ) if they know it is a 100 percent chance for a curse

Iskall, I'd recommend making the capacity of the vault crystal increase every 5 or 10 levels, not every level. In some ways that's frustrating to players (firsthand experience). But it makes them truly appreciate it when they do get that increase and it also acts as encouragement "hey your crystal capacity just increased, why don't you go and run a modified crystal" which would likely cause most players to get more out of them.

The part where you said you hoard inscriptions for your mega crystal and get rng’d is exactly how I feel about the catalysts and adding them to scav crystals. It seems I always add (for example) ornate and living and my scav items are everything other than those. Would it be possible to make it a higher chance or maybe always what you added to the crystal?

Maybe instead of having a room where you can upgrade your armor, make the players able to create vaults (Or instead i really like the idea of a tower) that at the end you get to a bloack or NPC who can upgrade your armor

Would really like it if the floor map was north facing, so when you walk in the top is north and the bottom is south and the arrow in the center points the direction you're facing. It's a fantastic idea though, really love it

Make puzzle rooms with the floor map idea, certain rooms have an activation point in them that you have to interact with and final room is the prize

I have a few questions regarding curses. Is the amount of them tied to the number of extra items after the capacity, or their size? Like would three size 8 catalysts give less curses than four size 6? Also, does it depend on the order? What would happen, if I put, into a 22 capacity crystal, catalysts of sizes 10, 6, 10 and 6, one curse or two? Because if I did it in the order of 10, 6, 6, 10, I would exceed only by one item.

If you are going to add the map for inscriptions, you could add an expertise that gives you that map for random rooms, with the radius or number of rooms that get mapped scaling with the expertise ranks. Could be a good replacement for the expertises that have been lost due to the catalyst changes. I also wanted to say that based on what you have described for the new catalyst/inscription stuff; I will never exceed the capacity of a vault crystal. The curses are not worth it. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing, but I doubt I am alone in this opinion.

Hey Iskall. I played VH for the first time when the Hermit crafters did. Loved it, gave feedback you replied, awesome interaction. I was wondering what you thought about the pack's end game track for solo players in terms of time played to complete the puzzle map to get to the last boss?!

I would love a map for the Vault Hunters. I have a very bad memory and I find it tedious to find back to the start of the Vault even with the compass.

Question: Will there be a Copious type catalyst that adds more vault gems? Suggestion: a curse that blocks off the hallways between rooms.

I actually think that removing vault rocks being crafted with chipped ones and chromatic iron would be great. With my first few play through it was always getting really annoyed or bored unable to get many of these and I just wanted to vault but I didn’t have enough chromatic iron.

Awesome to see the changes be basic and visual. At the least it looks like plays will be able to see the difference. Is the data different enough that it is compatible with automatic sorting?

I really like the idea of the map on the floor but honestly, people will just write down the coordinates or take a screenshot as reference, adding an extra step/annoyance. I would give players a map item too

Honestly, I think that the collapsing and the incomplete curses could simply be merged into one, I feel like collapsing on it's own isn't "cursey" enough

Personaly, with the map idea, I would make it so that the inscription rooms are most likley to spawn in the mapped area, rather than MUST spawn in the mapped area

Unique times should have names based on tarot cards, like the names of the pieces. Like theres a wand called “the magician” and like a hat called “the star”

I think the forge room could be a challenge room, you put your item in the forge, then it starts an event, such as spawning a hoard, a boss, or generating a puzzle. And you need to complete the challenge before you can retrieve the item.

I am once again suggesting to make the map not actually in the portal start room but the first actual room of the vault (with a special design). you could have the timer paused in there too if need be

add a colosseum chalenge room that locks you in and spawns a bunch of mobs and if you kill them all you get loot
