Well I guess it depends which version you mean. On the studio album version I am pretty sure Johnny plays the opening riff on the b and e string. It sounds brighter and you can even hear slides which he doesn't play on the radio version from Hatful of Hollows and of course like he plays it nowadays.

Yes, and the more I’ve looked at it there are parts that seem unorthodox to play, where he probably just came up with it by ear, which make it different 👍🤓🎸

Got a message from a mate a couple of days ago. He's a drummer and is playing a significant birthday for his missus with his band. Their guitar player can't get TCM; could I play it for them as he's knows I'm a huge Smiths fan? Attempted it years back but not tried it since. Straight to KZbin. Aw G you've got it. Search over.
