Al.,,, you are correct It's the soil temp more than the air temp that keeps greenhouses flourishing all year round. At this point I would hook up some heat lamps about 12. Inches above the seed bed. Once the seeds are sprouted and about 2 inches high start raising the heat lamps and at 24 inches above the plants wean them. I have, in zone 5, raised green peas, sugar peas, cabbages, turnips, kale, broccoli and spinach. It was a treat having a serving of fresh veggies for February thru April. GRANTED the crops were not as prolific as summer will see them. When you finally get snow keep the top of the structure free of snow and allow it to build up as.walls. about 4 feet high for insulation.

GOOD Morning from a dreary rainy Montreal. Something you may want to consider once the the produce isle is done for the season is to move the chickens along N Y city into the greenhouse for the coldest part of winter . @workingfolk4 жыл бұрын
"our friend Justin Rhodes says just plant," but Justin Rhodes has no control over the temperatures in New England and, more importantly, over the length of the days. As the day length there will very soon reach the 10 hour/day point, plant growth will slow to a near halt. I would not expect anything that might sprout at this ;late date to produce anything edible until the day length starts to increase in the spring, if it can survive that long. When I lived just a short hop from there in Maine, my goal was to have everything in the hoop house that I wanted to harvest in late Fall and Winter to be mature by the first week in November. Then it's a matter of keeping them alive when outdoor temps hit well below 0° through the use of layers of Agribon that were removed if the inside air warmed above fteezing and replaced before it dropped.

Starting seedlings in trays is about the best way to guarantee you'll have plants that can grow well into the fall/winter/spring months since it allows the grower to have plants ready for beds at their choosing. Indeed with a Greenhouse starting seedlings is ideal since it can take advantage of its microclimate and they take so little space that they can even be hung quite easily from the ribs/posts. One exciting alternative to heating Greenhouse is thru passive means available today like earth tubes that take heat from underground and using compost piles heat has shown some success as well. The design of in ground Greenhouses with earth tube circulation has been the most intriguing of all since it's only power source need is the fans that push the air that heats the and a retiree in Nebraska on KZbin grows Citrus there year round even in coldest months on the Great Plains. Kudos on the year to date and looking forward to seeing Olivia and her Dad sledding again as well as Gina getting talked into a ride again like last year when the snow's there to stay.

To keep soil temps up in Winter, you will need to isolate the greenhouse soil with perimeter insulation to at least below the frost line. Ideally you also need to create a moisture barrier (or capillary break) underneath, but that would involve moving a lot of dirt. Basically, apply soil isolation methods used in building a PAHS (Passive Annual Heat Storage)/Umbrella house. If you can insulate the hoophouse (several options available commercially) at night and in heavily overcast and snowy weather, you can keep the air temp from crashing as much. Also, row covers/low tunnels inside the hoophouse will help extend the season. Good luck.

Adding heat is a must up in the north, but plants also grow according to amount of sunlight daily. Normal growth starts in spring, daylight starts increasing, when daylight starts waning in late summer it signals plants to fruiting & dying off. Spinach freezes really well. I say make as much as you can now since it’s a cold crop and use the beds for other vegetables in spring and summer. Also Gina if you hit one egg with the other egg it cracks it perfectly so that it opens without spilling shells into your bowl. I’ve seen it done on many Asian cooking channels and tried it myself works amazing.

I feel your pain neighbor! International Falls lady here. We've had snow on the ground for over a week now. Frost is setting in and we are coming to terms with the fact that winter is here and not going away until May/ June 😩😂😂😂. Little secret...... I actually love winter 😉

Al and Gina I was wondering what the temperatures are getting to in the greenhouse for you (lows and highs)? Hope you are all doing well. Hagd Lumnah's!
@wingingitsemiretiredlife29814 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same typically they said high tunnels are 20 degrees warmer than the outside air. Although Al usually announces the temp outside this morning he did not ha! I'm guessing that high tunnel was around 50F or 10 c a guestimate on my part. Seeds will germinate at 40 sporadically and slower but they will grow. They may have better luck with starts from seed trays.
@lisabevans81074 жыл бұрын
@@wingingitsemiretiredlife2981 definitely warmer than here if so. Still curious about the greenhouse tho.
@wingingitsemiretiredlife29814 жыл бұрын
@@lisabevans8107 I use the term high tunnel instead of greenhouse because technically a greenhouse is heated. Al plans to heat so it will be a greenhouse.

Maybe left one tomato plant, just to see how it would of grown in winter

During the winter, I would plant everything in the middle of the greenhouse as the sides may get a bit too cold. You may also want to think about adding a few heaters in there depending on how cold it gets

I sure believe all you've done and accomplished this year has been a great success. What you planted in the green house should do well. If for some reason it doesn't workout at least you can learn from it and try something different next year. Each year is a learning experience. I fixed another meal yesterday all raised on our place. The video you shared giving us the total of meat raised on your homestead, I could see your face beaming with great joy. It sure makes you feel blessed and delighted, that's for sure! Enjoy watching your family work together to achieve your goals. God bless!

My Grandfather was a keen gardener here in the UK, and he had a greenhouse that was heated by a greenhouse paraffin stove (I think paraffin is kerosene in the US?) and whenever I smell paraffin it reminds me of the winters he spent in there growing things like broccoli, cabbage, and root vegetables. Stay safe, everyone.

Al i think your idea of having another greenhouse heated with a boiler would be great! I would imagine fresh veggies in winter up there probably would sell very fast! Love hearing your ideas and seeing a lot of them implemented.

Only thing that may be a problem is the amount of fire wood a boiler uses. We used coal in the one we had,but coal might be hard to find now.

Adding a boiler is a great idea. Use OB pex with crimp or compression fittings and make sure to use a 4 way thermostatic bypass valve with a ecm pump for the boiler loop and one for the system loop. This will allow you to keep the boiler in the optimum temp range while keeping the system loop at the optimum as well. Also use a manifold system for the loops to the green house. It does use more tubing but will mean all the green houses get supplied with warm water. Also insulate the pipes in the ground until you get to the green house.

Black ground cover works well to heat the soil. So does black two gallon jugs buried on there sides a little over half deep. Search DIY Greenhouse heaters, or passive water heaters.
