I have a reverse shoulder due to a funky shoulder joint and a severed subscapular tendon. I was unable to put my hand on my chest. My other shoulder joint is a mess too but I really don’t want to go through the surgery again, it was brutal and the reverse shoulder limits my ROM. I have constant muscle tightness in the area that you are focusing on in this video. This has affected my cervical spine and mid back and I’m hoping this may help. Any comments will be welcomed.
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we can't really comment on the reverse shoulder issue, because neither of us has any experience dealing with that. 😕 But we can offer you perspectives on your other shoulder, mid back and neck issues. For the shoulder, you need pain free stretches for restricted motions and also you need to train rotator cuff muscles progressively. We will be doing a video about this in the future. What might also be necessary is checking out the movement patterns of the shoulder, and correct them if there is something wrong with them. For the neck, some of the most common things that need to be done include activating the deep flexor muscles and fixing troublesome movement patterns. Upper back often benefits from joint mobilization and soft tissue release, but in your case there might also be a need to check out if your trapezius muscle is working properly. Hopefully this answer helps you. 😊

I just tried this, using not a tennis ball but simply my hand and fingers. I have instantly experienced some relief of a muscle ache in the front of my chest that I've been suffering with for the last week or so. Does this track? I usually don't like massage, but I will definitely try this more in the future.

Sorry to hear about your situation. 😕 It sounds more complicated than the average stiffness of the area that stems from office work etc. So it requires lots of stuff to resolve (opening stiff muscles, training the activation of right muscles, propably doing some nerve mobilizations for example). Hopefully you find the right stuff that helps you. 😊

As a massage therapist and having done Gym/ Fitness qualifications. Very few at the end would mention about rest days for the muscle being worked to recover and also why it is important to do so. Nothing worse than giving a treatment getting things good then they come back next week having not listened to the rest advice, then done a heavy Gym sesh on the same day of treatment. Rest is just as important as the treatment, exercise prescription, staying hydrated etc. Therapists only want what is best for you to feel better… or should anyway.

I was dealing with pain in my upper back that led to rib pain for months. Stretches like these and massage definitely helped some, but getting a new mattress has changed my life. I figured it out by spending a few nights at a friend's house and my back pain improved. I went home and within a couple of days in my old bed I woke up literally groaning in pain. Within a couple of weeks on a new firmer mattress I feel sooo much better. My rib pain is gone and my upper back muscles are no longer locked up. When my husband gives me a backrub now the muscles actually move and aren't solid knots 😂 Just something to think about!

Hi 😀, my Pilates teacher shared this great exercise technique. She shared, though, that the tennis 🎾 we use to play with our lovely dogs are harder and don’t have enough “squish” and may aggravate the muscle group. Might be best, when you are able , to “splurge” on some real tennis balls. I did, really noticed the difference. When not using for tennis, they last a really long time and worth the investment. Hope this helps 😊.

Might it be better to take a harder ball like a LaCrosse ball to get that muscle? Getting down through 2 layers of muscle is pretty hard with a Tennisball... Trapezius and levator scapulae are top layers wich can be hard to get through sometime...
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
You are right!👍 Sometimes the region is so painful (most of the time with symptomatic people) that a tennis ball is a good starting point. But as you explained there are muscle layers on top of the SPS so eventually a harder ball would be better. I should have mentioned it in the video.🤦🏼‍♂️👍 At our clinic we recommend our clients to use hard massage balls, when the tennis ball isn't hard enough anymore.

Hi, there are some things that will affect these muscles. They are respiratory muscles, so bad breathing technique might cause stiffening in this region. Bad thoracic spine and costal (rib) mobility might stiffen these muscles. Also the usual things, such as long hours in a static positions at work and the lack of movement variety during the day. Hope this helps! With best regards, Markkus

I've had problems with that deep muscle on the right side for over 20 years. I call that trigger point "the rock" because it gets so tightly knotted up that it literally feels like there is a small rock under/next to my shoulder blade. Whenever it gets to the point of being unbearable, I ask my husband to "please massage the rock." Even though he does a decent job, the knot is so deep that he often barely gets down far enough to actually get it to release. He uses his thumbs but soon his hands start to hurt. So I was recommended a tool by a physical therapist. It is called a Thera-cane massager & it works wonders on that spot! It digs down much deeper than a tennis ball, but I have to be careful because it "hurts so good" that I tend to overdo it & a few times I've actually bruised that area. Lately my left side has started feeling tensed up too. Growing old sucks... Thanks for mentioning "rest days". Even though it feels great, I've learned to back off from massaging every day, especially if I use the Thera-cane. On rest days, I just use heat and/or topical solutions such as Bio-freeze roll on or Salonpas patches.
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear that you found help with the Thera-cane. What ever you can use to dig deep enough to the spot will do. Keep doing the regular releases, and remember also to stretch your thoracic spine and strengthen scapular muscles, it will help you as well.😊👍

As soon as I did what you guys explained on this video, felt like I finally found it. Hello. I have a neck imbalance where right SCM muscle of my neck is weaker than the left. In addition. The left side of the BACK of the neck is weak. And the right side of the BACK of the neck is strong. This is attributed to the fact that I used to have a very tight right pectoralis and a weak abductor in my left leg. This caused the muscles to compensate. I am currently fixing my left abductor, my spinea erectors (which are also imbalanced) and I am stretching my right pec In addition, I will be doing neck curls and Facepulls to help with the neck. And Jefferson deadlifts for the spinea erectors Is there any exercises that you recommend I do to fix the imbalance in the neck?
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
Sounds good, keep doing those exercises.👍 You can add eccentric exercises for the tight pectorals if you have time. For example deep pushups with gymnastic rings or TRX, or just have your hands on books (not on a slippery surface) and go slowly down as low as you can.
@spicytaco5975
@spicytaco5975 Жыл бұрын
@@movementmaintenance thank you for your reply. I’d like to point out that I have a case of pectus carinatum that provided my right pectorals with a mechanical advantage while doing push-ups. This is why it’s tight. It has caused the right shoulder to be rounded and the left shoulder near-normal. This has also caused the Imbalances in the back. Particularly in the spinea erector of the left side. For this I am doing Jefferson deadlifts My case of pectus carinatum has led cartilage to pop out from the right. Hence giving the right pec an advantage
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
Thanks for more details. Yeah, the pectus carinatum changes some biomechanical details. 🤔 You can also try occasionally doing some triggerpoint release with a tennis ball to your pecs, similar to what was done for the serratus posterior. 👍🏻 For the SCM weakness and imbalance, I would recommend doing deep neck flexor activations, and later combining that with larger head movements. That usually does the trick. It's hard to describe with text how to do that, but we will do a video of that in the future perhaps. 👍🏻

@@movementmaintenance That's just crazy, I know the video said that it has to be done for weeks, but I just felt 5 years worth of pain go away. I've been trying to get rid of this all this time, even pain relief meds barely helped, and at times when it was at its worse I could even feel it while I slept in my dreams somehow, I would literally cry out of frustration at times it got that bad, it was just no way to live. Then 40 minutes ago you sent me a link after this video had helped me somehow, and the pain completely disappeared, it's almost frustrating how easily the problem got fixed after all this time. lol I found you randomly because of the algorithm, but this is legitimately life changing. I will add these to my routine and do them every other day as recommended. Subscribed now. Thanks!

This muscle has been bugging the crap out of me. I’ve had two shoulder surgeries, reconstructive surgery with implants for 20 years that I got taken out five years ago shattered my shoulder and I have wings on both shoulder blades that I believe I’ve had my whole life so with all that history my back is jacked right now after doing way too much yardwork for someone my weight and age and even though I’m strong those industrial sized Weedwhacker‘s blew me out after a 45 minute nonstop. Weed whack frenzy and I still haven’t recovered. Hopefully these help me get better and I know it’s my serratus muscle. It’s a big knot under my left shoulder blade, size of a palm of a hand.😮

This was extremely useful as that area was very tender and painful, after the first time it felt very good but the next few days the area was very sore, I just gave it a bit more attention and things started to release and pop and shoulder mobility is improved. So I'm just going to target it twice a week until it's not sore anymore?
@movementmaintenance

Yes, that is the usual way to go. After the region isn't sore/tight anymore, you can still do this 1-2 times/month or as needed to make sure that the tightness hasn't returned. 👍🏻 And of course don't forget to use & exercise the muscles as well. 💪🏻

@@movementmaintenance Oh and the tennis ball... I mean that's like a 99cent massage therapist! I threw my back out on Monday by foolishly going oh I'm going to wash my hair over the tub, but leaning over after a few minutes I could suddenly feel things slip and get painful, I recovered just in time for the real pain and shock, I've been strengthening my back and I could feel things slowly pull and stretch and get out of whack whilst in the past that would happen in one swift knack... but everything in my left butt cheek and lower back are cramped.. next day I couldn't even roll out of bed or move.. I went to town with the tennisbal mushing up all the painful areas I could find and by evening I had less pain and way more mobility again, normally it takes me the better part of a week to recover when this happens or pay money for a treatment. This is the first time I'm up and running again the next day;

I am very sorry to hear about your situation. 😔 Usually there are a few things that need to be addressed: find out what muscles & joints are limited in their movement, find out what muscles do not work properly (are weak/inactive) and find out what kinds of routines in the daily life are not helpful/cause issues (for example, if there is a lot of static positions such as sitting in front of a computer or cell phone). When you have a clearer picture of these, you can start to adress them in the order of what is most likely to help you. Tight muscles/joints need movement, inactive muscles need activating and strengthening and behavioral patterns need to be replaced with better ones for the health. Hopefully this helps you even a little. 🙏🏻 We will be uploading more content regarding these subjects in the future, so maybe those videos can also help you down the line. Best of luck to you, and feel free to ask more questions if you feel the need. You are not alone in this. 💪🏻

Thankyou for the opportunity too ask you the following question. The C1 that connects brain has no cushioning. It is damaged. I do not understand correct terminology. Do you have any thoughts on this? (Many variables are at play with human body and "charcoal" has helped. Plus many other efforts including good and high quality oils and so on).
@movementmaintenance
@movementmaintenance Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment!🙏 I am not exactly sure what you mean by cushioning, because there is no disc between the c1 and occiput, nor the c1 and c2 by default. Or do you mean that c1 is fused to your occipital bone? If that is the case then best conservative bet is to strengthen muscles and keep other cervical vertebrae moving properly by stretching and mobilizing gently. I suggest seeing a physica therapist, who has experience with these types of problems. Hope this comment helps.🙏

I was having major issues with my upper back. It led to me developing costochondritis which is horrible awful rib/sternum pain caused by the back ribs being unable to move properly. This causes the ribs to move too much around the sternum to compensate leading to lots of pain and inflammation. I tried the tennis ball, stretching, massage, the back pod. These things helped, but what really got rid of it was getting a new mattress. Months of debilitating pain gone within a few weeks of getting a new firmer mattress. So something to think about if you're having a lot of pain in this area.
