This is the best Hot Toddy you can make, and it's dead simple. Holiday hangover? Here's the cure!

Shop spirits for your cocktails (Affiliate): bit.ly/H2Dspirits
Here's a link to the glass I'm using in this video:
amzn.to/2RpMtVq
The Hot Toddy is a cocktail staple, an ancient drink from the earliest days of mixology, it's actual origin is probably impossible to pin down. It's nothing more than a simple mixture of hot water, some kind of spirit and some sugars. Some folks, like myself, add in a lemon twist and a dash or two of bitters. If you're using the right spirit, it can be absolute heaven in a glass. So, allow me to humbly submit what I believe to be the perfect, absolute best, hot toddy.
Hot Toddy
2 oz. or 60 ml. Whisk(e)y (I'm using Monkey Shoulder)
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Simple Syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
4 oz. or 120 ml. near boiling water
Garnish with a lemon twist
I promise you'll enjoy this drink. If you like the show, I hope you'll subscribe and turn on notifications!
Most of the tools and gear I use on the show can be found on my gear page at: bit.ly/H2DGear BUT, here's a couple of links that everyone is almost always asking me about:

Holy hell! Whiskey Tribe is watching my show! Thanks for checking me out! There's really not much of a way around batch shooting for me at this point, but it definitely involves a healthy dose of stratergy to keep myself standing by the end. I genuinely don't remember much from my Tiki Series.

I hear you on those tiki drinks Greg, I don't remember much of my bucks night after I visited a tiki bar and had two drinks that are legally okay for one person to drink and one that they can only legally sell if two people collect it... I had visited one bar before that where at least three people bought me a pint of beer, I supposedly visited at least three more bars that night and ended up dancing at a club where my friend who was a bouncer there got me free drinks until I got kicked out for being too drunk... Or so I'm told...

Growing up in Scotland and this being a common drink at New Years (even for kids older than 5), I have to point out that traditionally we used and still use honey, not syrup. Of course it may come down to preference, but the mix of a proper Scottish heather honey mixed in with the hot water and whiskey gives a taste that can never be forgotten, guaranteed peaceful sleep :D I know some of you prefer to use tea as opposed to hot water, tea was an English thing however, we Scots were not afforded such luxuries.. Apart from the worlds best whiskey of course ;)

My Grandpa used to make these in the evening before bed. It went a little something like this: 1 lemon wheel - place in bottom of mug 1 tsp honey 30mL scotch - stir with the honey and lemon wheel Add a teabag then boiling water to brew the tea in the mug with the other ingredients. Remove the teabag after it's dark enough for you, then drink.

I was taught the hot whiskey by an expat irish gentlemen at a bar in Houston, TX. Lemon wheel studded with cloves in the bottom, pour over about 2 oz. of good Irish whiskey, top with hot water. That's it, nothing else. Previously I grew up on bourbon, lemon, honey, and hot water. Which, when served at room temp by the spoonful, was prescribed by my pediatrician for us as kids as a better cure for the common cold than anything he could get us from the pharmacy. God Bless that man.

I like a spiced Hot Toddie with brandy. I typically stud a few cloves around a lemon wheel, press out the juice, and maybe add a cinnamon stick. A bit of simple syrup, a dose of brandy, then very hot water. It's so nice. edit: I'd also suggest one of my favorite winter drinks, the Snowshoe. It is super simple: (roughly) half and half brandy or bourbon and mint schnapps, over ice, stirred of course. I have two favorite cheap-o brandies, one which seems to work great with spice like apple cider, and one that does well with things like mint and chocolate. Adjust the ratio to your own taste. I have not had a Snowshoe with a bourbon or with good old Jack Daniels that was bad, so it seems a safer bet.

You do a much different Hot Toddy than I have had. Shot of whiskey (Scotch, Irish, or Bourbon, as you please) Juice of half a lemon A tablespoon of honey Hot water to top up the mug Generally used to treat a cold or sore throat down here in the South.
@davidpascoe293
@davidpascoe293 5 жыл бұрын
That's a nice goose-neck kettle, Greg. Excuse me while I grab mine for the coffee-makin'. More relevant to the topic at hand, I often use the toddy as a sore throat remedy, with half an ounce of lemon juice and a healthy dollop of honey. The honey and lemon sooth while the whiskey deadens the pain of terrible, terrible choices. And then there all the spices. Sometimes I float a lovely star anise pod, sometimes a couple of whole cloves, and stir with a cinnamon stick. Still, I believe I'll be giving your recipe a shot, soon. For one, it's an excuse to get some Monkey Shoulder, of which I have heard much. I usually go with a bourbon or rye, depending on how spicy I'm feeling. Cheers, good sir. To your health.

I'll have to give this simplified recipe a try. I tend to go a bit nuts when whipping together a hot toddy, especially if it's intended to be a cold remedy. I like to use dark spiced rum, black tea instead of just hot water, honey, and an entire cloved lemon wedge.

I have always had it made with hot water whatever whisky on hand an a spoon full of honey, according to my elders in my family its the only way to cure a cold or the flu, Hurrah for being from Appalachia where coal used to roll and whisky burns
@rmhuff
@rmhuff 5 жыл бұрын
I was always told this was a medicinal drink. Honey being the best thing for a cold/flu and cause it's thick, you have to add boiling water. Also, honey doesn't always have the best taste so you want to round out the flavor with whiskey which by the way, keeps the chills at bay. You gotta get your Vitamin C in there so add some lemon.

Monkey Shoulder in a hot toddy, well I'll be damned. Do you really want all those fruity, banana-y flavors in a winter/Christmas drink? If I made a hot toddy I'd probably use Glenlivet 12, since it tastes like apples and pears which would probably pair well with the lemon.

When I was 7 years old, my grandmother made me this drink after falling very ill from flu like symptoms. It was the sickest I had ever felt. She made me this drink but she added peppermints in it. I woke up the next morning in a pool of sweat but every symptom was GONE. I will never forget how amazing I felt the next morning. This worked as a miracle cure for a bad cold.
