You can actually send the ECM to Nick‘s TV repair in Tucson, Arizona. They replaced the one chip that creates the problem from overheating. I sent my door lock circuit boards there, they re-soldered it and checked for continuity, which helped.
@jonasstridh6839 Жыл бұрын
For information! The component that breaks is a TPIC46L02DB, 6 channel gate driver. When changing, no reprogramming is necessary. Unfortunately, it takes quite a lot of heat for the old one to come off and a hot air soldering station will be needed to do the job! Have done it on an ECM with successful results! The component costs around $2.50 USD.

Important for B207 as XWD versions: they need a special ECU which is even more rare. In Germany I didn’t find anybody who wanted to repair mine (all say it’s not fixable), so I had to hunt a used XWD unit worldwide. The one I finally found and purchased is currently at Orio/Saab in Sweden because my Saab workshop wasn’t able to adapt it to my ‘10 9-3X. My car is out of order since November now 😫 Directly ordered the spacer kit now. So important advice for all XWD owners: be even more cautious due to extreme limited availability!

A lovely gift from GM. Older gens of Saabs almost never had ECU issue. These new ones have much daintier circuitry according to the shops that told me that no one can repair, and they just replace them. If your serial is still the same when the "repaired" one returns, that would be cool! If it really is repaired, let us know who, since all the places I called except the one in FL, admitted they could not repair them. The one in FL had their own issues according to all the negative reviews. Best of luck! Hope it goes well.

You can prevent ECM failure with a special kit. It is a plate with some spacers ( made out of rubber). This will raise the ECM with 10-15mm and the plate works like a heatshield. I made my own spacer out of tuffnol, extended screws,spacer, Then tuffnol,then spacer,then ecu. The two spaces allow insulation from heat and airflow. Secondly either cut a square in your plastic engine cover, directly above ecu, or, leave the plastic cover off. The combination of the two lowers the temp of the ecu casing by as much as twenty degrees. The ecu earth strap is the one not to forget when refitting. Mine runs sweet.

Small correction Kyle, The ECU sits on the intake manifold, the exhaust is on the other side of the engine. I`d like to see a failed unit sometime, I`m curious about what actually fails inside them.
@mcdonaldg29083 жыл бұрын
I aint No Bill gates but it cause degradation of the circuit board. due to heat like metal gets hot it expands and the heat shortens the life of the board quicker..
@saabfeverfrank3 жыл бұрын
@@mcdonaldg2908 Yes, you are quite right about heat shortening the life of electronics - that's actually how they are rated. when a manufacturer states "20,000 hours life expectancy", they haven't actually tested them for 20,000 hours. they run them at very high temperatures until they fail, then run it through a formula to calculate the life at "normal" temperatures. My main point though was that Kyle said "it sits really close to the exhaust", he's probably thinking of the B2*5 engines in the 9-5 that have the exhaust on the front of the engine. As I said, I`m very curious to know what is actually failing in the ECU's. They are getting quite old now (upto 17 years) and I`m not sure it's necessarily the heat that's killing them. I might do a test sometime to measure the heat since, when running, the ECU will be cooled by the air in the intake manifold. Tuned cars may fair worse than stock cars since, the turbo is probably spooling up more and the intercooler can't get rid of ALL the extra heat. There could also be an issue of heat soak after the engine is turned off.
@CycloneCyd3 жыл бұрын
Me too, @Saab Fever. I've had a failed ECU shipped from Aus so I can have a look at it (these fails are rare in UK). Yet to open it up though. If you've any good ideas what to look for, email me.
@CycloneCyd3 жыл бұрын
@mcdonald C so it's heat! Well, you don't say! If you have any actual information about how it fails, please share. There's a lot us trying to find a solution before there are no more secondhand ones left!
@saabfeverfrank3 жыл бұрын
@@CycloneCyd The most obvious thing would be dry solder joints. Have a look (under a microscope) at various pins inside the ECU. they are a bit of a pain to open though! If there's nothing obvious, then you might be looking for a failing capacitor. As I said, given the age of the units, I think it's unfair to declare the cause to be heat though. All of the capacitors inside the ECU are up to 17 years old now. check some of the Retro computer forums etc, people are having to replace capacitors in 25 year old computers and they aren't subjected to engine heat! Sure, they are a bit older than our ECU's but not by much!

This will extend the life of the rebuilt ECM. I'd also consider slightly modifying the plastic cover to allow outside air to circulate under it, as frankly the whole plastic cover acts like a huge blanket trapping the heat of the engine. People should look up the 7-piece dress-up kit , stainless pan head 30 Torx bolts for coil cover, and front plastic cover. their 5 bucks and for 5 bucks more you can have them machined and buy the aluminum "Griffen" oil cap For all Ecotec 4cyl B207 2003-11 (short), 6cyl (tall)

It's a pity that they put the ECM there... Because the engine itself it's bulletproof.

I'm sorry but your video is completely useful if you are not adding the company that fixed your ECU, there are so many scams out there and we all would like to avoid them...
