In today's episode, I review how to remove the ECM for a 2.0l engine on a saab 9-3 convertible. This application is good for all model years from 2003-2011 that have the 2.0T engine in their car. A bad ecm can cause the car to loose power and have a check engine light go off. Many shops can charge a lot of money to repair this, which cause many saab owners to give up on their 9-3's! I am hear to stress that this is an easy $200 and 20 minutes of work. The codes that are pertaining to this issue are P0201 P0202 P0203 & P0204 all listed as an injector circuit on the scanner. I hope you find this helpful! Please like, share, and subscribe!

You can actually send the ECM to Nick‘s TV repair in Tucson, Arizona. They replaced the one chip that creates the problem from overheating. I sent my door lock circuit boards there, they re-soldered it and checked for continuity, which helped.

For information! The component that breaks is a TPIC46L02DB, 6 channel gate driver. When changing, no reprogramming is necessary. Unfortunately, it takes quite a lot of heat for the old one to come off and a hot air soldering station will be needed to do the job! Have done it on an ECM with successful results! The component costs around $2.50 USD.

I have 2 Saab 9-3, a convertible 2.0 T (185hp) from 1998 without any problem and a 2.0 T (210hp) from end 2006 with power failure problems. I am turning around since a few monthes to fix this problem without succes. I will now follow your advice and send the calculator to Germany to be repaired. I will let you know in a couple of weeks. not sure where he recommends BUT try Kirschmann and koxha in germany. they live test them in working saabs before sending them out. any of the others in the US are pretty hit or miss and you are just lucky if yours works for an extended time. they now distribute directly in the US compared to ~1yr ago when i did 2 replacements and used their US distributor. now they go direct as of Jan 2024: "Effective immediately, all customers in the USA will receive a refurbished control unit to our new quality standards for 400 US dollars including express shipping. Thanks to the liberal legislation, no import duties are due (this is only the case from 800 US dollars). The prerequisite for this offer is the provision of a repairable unit. If this is not the case, we charge 500 US dollars including express shipping. Naturally, both offers include a heat shield plate and a 1-year warranty." unfortunately i spent 650$ each for mine and a friend's whose went bad about the same time

it has nothing to do with heat as it sits on the intake and it's already being cooled by spinning fans so the kit of raising it it's basically pointless, if you are that scared of heat just remove the plastic cover or completely extend the wires and move it under the fender or wherever you feel like it's more suitable... The issue is due to age, it's a electronic equipment wich is not ment to run forever because we aren't in the mercedes cobra 80's age anymore. If you really want to know what a bad ECU is just google opel astra 1.7 ecu wich sits on top of the engine and the culprit for it dying is because on the diesel pump is a valve wich over time leaks oil via the capilarity of the cables straight into the ECU, so yea, that's a bad design not this, this is just pure age degradation.

You can prevent ECM failure with a special kit. It is a plate with some spacers ( made out of rubber). This will raise the ECM with 10-15mm and the plate works like a heatshield. Important for B207 as XWD versions: they need a special ECU which is even more rare. In Germany I didn’t find anybody who wanted to repair mine (all say it’s not fixable), so I had to hunt a used XWD unit worldwide. The one I finally found and purchased is currently at Orio/Saab in Sweden because my Saab workshop wasn’t able to adapt it to my ‘10 9-3X. My car is out of order since November now 😫 Directly ordered the spacer kit now. So important advice for all XWD owners: be even more cautious due to extreme limited availability!

@saabfeverfrank
@saabfeverfrank 3 жыл бұрын
@@mcdonaldg2908 Yes, you are quite right about heat shortening the life of electronics - that's actually how they are rated. when a manufacturer states "20,000 hours life expectancy", they haven't actually tested them for 20,000 hours. they run them at very high temperatures until they fail, then run it through a formula to calculate the life at "normal" temperatures. My main point though was that Kyle said "it sits really close to the exhaust", he's probably thinking of the B2*5 engines in the 9-5 that have the exhaust on the front of the engine. As I said, I`m very curious to know what is actually failing in the ECU's. They are getting quite old now (upto 17 years) and I`m not sure it's necessarily the heat that's killing them. I might do a test sometime to measure the heat since, when running, the ECU will be cooled by the air in the intake manifold. Tuned cars may fair worse than stock cars since, the turbo is probably spooling up more and the intercooler can't get rid of ALL the extra heat. There could also be an issue of heat soak after the engine is turned off.
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 3 жыл бұрын

@saabfeverfrank
@saabfeverfrank 3 жыл бұрын
@@CycloneCyd The most obvious thing would be dry solder joints. Have a look (under a microscope) at various pins inside the ECU. they are a bit of a pain to open though! If there's nothing obvious, then you might be looking for a failing capacitor. As I said, given the age of the units, I think it's unfair to declare the cause to be heat though. All of the capacitors inside the ECU are up to 17 years old now. check some of the Retro computer forums etc, people are having to replace capacitors in 25 year old computers and they aren't subjected to engine heat! Sure, they are a bit older than our ECU's but not by much!

Just replaced my ECU couple months ago. I cheap out on the Tech 2, and just buy the cable to reprogram from ECU program. End up the eBay ECU did not work, then replacement ECU came in. Then CIM failed. I end up got the MDI. Yes, I did not spend $1K, but the car has sit in my driveway more than 2 months.

A lovely gift from GM. Older gens of Saabs almost never had ECU issue. These new ones have much daintier circuitry according to the shops that told me that no one can repair, and they just replace them. If your serial is still the same when the "repaired" one returns, that would be cool! If it really is repaired, let us know who, since all the places I called except the one in FL, admitted they could not repair them. The one in FL had their own issues according to all the negative reviews. Best of luck! Hope it goes well.

I made my own spacer out of tuffnol, extended screws,spacer, Then tuffnol,then spacer,then ecu. The two spaces allow insulation from heat and airflow. Secondly either cut a square in your plastic engine cover, directly above ecu, or, leave the plastic cover off. The combination of the two lowers the temp of the ecu casing by as much as twenty degrees. The ecu earth strap is the one not to forget when refitting. Mine runs sweet.

They make a relocation kit for these to move the ecu away from all the heat next to the rite Side radiator fan. No wires needed because stock ones will reach and you will never burn out your ecu.

Those guys don't wanna spend $1000- to fix their SAAB because they DON'T know Saab ! To protect the ECM/ECU just install a kind of heat shield under the ECM/ECU that cost around $70- ( heat shield price ) and you can easily install by yourself.

Why did he drill the tops of the screws? All you have to is use a cutoff wheel to cut a slot in the screws and then use an impact driver to remove them. I've NEVER not been able to get those torx screws out. Hope this comment helps

Wtf man that didnt do anything for me and i spent time watching the video. I knew it was ecm. Thats why i 3 saabs. Everytime the ecm fried i just got another saab for under $1000. It was cheaper than the repair. But thats not even the issue. The problem is finding someone to program it. My saab mechanic doesn't do it because the GM software costs $2000/year to license. This is a total GM fckery. In fact all features GM integrated into this car are all designed-to-fail concepts. GM shouldve went bankrupt back in the 2000's or whenever it was obama bailed them out. Now they still exist making the worst vehicles in the world screwing the American people and destroying good car companies like saab

Another thing you an do before reinstalling the rebuilt ECM is to source a Spacer Kit I've seen online which slightly raises the ECM off the block allowing cooler air to circulate between the block and the ECM. This will extend the life of the rebuilt ECM. I'd also consider slightly modifying the plastic cover to allow outside air to circulate under it, as frankly the whole plastic cover acts like a huge blanket trapping the heat of the engine. It really is a ridiculous piece of design.

what the guy did NOT say is that there is a kit you can buy that allows for a gap between engine and ECM. it's less than $100 and worth the price i imagine if one still has the stock set up and ECM or if you plan on keeping the car for years with the rebuilt one
