Hey! Thank You for this! I have an 2002 e65 745i with a N62B44 engine. Around 150k kilometers i was starting to add oil and everyvody said it is normal and dont worrie about it. After watching this video, i switched to 5w-40 and now after three tanks of petrol, oil level has not dropped! Really happy for this advice and i hope more owners will hear this!

I’ve always used Mobil 5w-40 in my wife’s E53 4.4. It’s at 143,000 miles on a 51 plate. It seems quite happy on that. The only issues on the oil side was the breathers which run across the top of the engine disintegrated basically completely turned into black goo. I replaced them and it’s run sweet since then. Replaced the auto/sport selector which snapped and the gear selection module because the car kept dropping into 2nd gear failsafe and it didn’t know what gear it was in. Also changed front door handles, drivers door lock and both rear window regulators. Other than these inconveniences the car is 20 years old, looks like an absolute BEAST and drives beautifully. My wife wants to keep it forever! Fingers crossed there have been no major mechanical or electrical issues whatsoever. 🤞🏻

That's RIGHT! I make a blended synthetic of Mobile 1 0w-40 with Lucas Oil Fully synthetic Stabilizer. It ultimately gives a 5w-40 in the end. Yea, buddy!

interesting, I've talked with parts department at my local BMW dealership and they said they've changed over to recommending 0W40 because it's apparently better for starting extreme cold temperatures and gives better fuel economy

My 2018 520i is just about due its second proper service in about 1200 miles and it's been 17500 miles since its last one which was at 14000 MILES! I'm worried the engine won't last as long as I hope - I'm hoping to keep this for ten years or more...

I run 5-40 T6 Shell Rotella in all my cars (wife’s Boxster, SL500 & C230 Kompressor), except the 86,5 Porsche 928, it gets 20-50 Valvoline VR1.

This won't always be true. Many people will be running round on an older car that has a broken thermostat. The car will be running cool, and on face value, the car will seem ok, just cool. A thicker oil will never get to temp, so at least a 30w oil will be thinner at that same temp and give better "working" protection. A well maintained n53 will of course be running at 95 degrees, so a 40w oil given some wear tolerances may make sense.

....BMW recommend 5W-30, as "scanspeak00" says... and BMW also recommend long intervals for oil change (25kkm)... and they were wrong-lot of chain failure! I read about this-to change 5W-30 for 5W-40 (im not sure, but i think that BMW recommend this changing oil after engine had 100000km-but cant find were this was written)... Have N47D20C engine, and read also that in summer is better 5W-40, in winter 5W-30... I am confused... :-) B-) Thank you for advice...

Engine oil should be changed every 6,000 miles to preserve the life of any BMW. I change my engine oil every 6,000 miles with Mobil 1 full-synthetic and now have over 216,000 miles on my 2011 528i.. *Do not listen to anyone saying its ok to do engine oil changes every 12,000 - 15,000 miles, that person is likely trying to sell you a new car soon*

Hi BMW doc PLEASE HELP!!! My bmw has no electric at all I have to open the car with the actual key and nothing at all happens when I put my key fob in to start it up it’s just dead. I tried some jump leads and the electrics came on for about 5 seconds then all went dead again. Have you any suggestions your help would be much appreciated thank you.

Check your positive/negative terminal leads for corrosion and tightness. Allow your jumpers to stay connected with the other vehicle for at least 10-15mins. to supply enough charge before attempting to start your engine. If the battery is Dead like completely flat with no signs of life after this you may need to just purchase a new battery. Local auto parts store will usually test the battery n’ charging system for free. Turn off all unnecessary components such as lighting, radio, a/c, etc. to help with the diagnosis process. Hi Dean I have a2010 335i E93 with 90,000 miles on it and I just started running 5/40 in it . I’ve been having problems with the oil temperature going from 230 up to 250 I changed out the oil temperature thermostat and got it down to 240 so I changed out the oil coil cooler hoses and then put in the 5/40 it runs quitter should I go back to 5/30 because of the turbos ?

Felt like this video didn’t show any sort of evidence, although I’m sure you know your oils; I’m a seeing data type a person. Although I do know from a google search that “In some circumstances, thicker oil can be used to compensate for increased bearing clearances (gaps between bearing and rotating shaft) that have developed over the years. A large change in bearing clearances can result in poorer lubrication.” So I’m guessing the 40 is used because it is thicker at a higher temperature and this lubricates higher gaps/clearances that have developed inside the engine ?

diesel with turbo 5W30 too long to thick and diesel engine take too long to come up too temperature and it needs to come up quick to protect the turbo and internals
