Takeaways: - Misha needs a VLN drive. Holding pace with a Cayman GT4 and an M2 in a homebrew build he's only just driving for the first time is fucking impressive. - Lapo needs to start his own aftermarket parts business. Plenty of time attack racers would pay well for what he can crank out. - The Opel Speedster is too beautiful for this world. That the Lotus Elise and its variants no longer exist is proof we have failed as a species.

Fun fact about those Ecotec engines is here in the states we got the 2.0 variant with a factory supercharger in the cobalt SS. The 2.2 I believe the weak point is the rods. But with new rods and pistons along with an upgraded valve springs these things are capable of monstrous power. The 2.0 in stock form can easily push over 450hp to the wheels. GM even has a handbook for the Ecotec line on how to build these engines and what fails at certain power levels.

@@schumifannreins295 yes and no. The LSJ was the supercharged version that was in the Ion Redline and Cobalt SS. They used the LNF in later Cobalt motors which was the turbo variant. Yes they did use the LNF (2.0T) in the Solstice GXP and Sky Redline but no they didn't use the supercharged variant (LSJ). The standard Sky and Solstice used the LE5 which was a NA 2.4L.....and there's a bastard year for the Cobalt SS that used this motor. In this car it has the L61 which was a 2.2L. LSJ parts were simple bolt ons, like the supercharger thats on this car. I used to own a 04 Ion and my friend had a 04 Ion Redline and his friend had an 05 Cobalt SS. Lots of time spend upgrading.

Hi There, As an engineer myself, and a teamchief in a race team and extreme motorsport enthousiast... WOW!!! What a build! You can see it has power in abundance for this type of car, but many people can increase power I guess. What I am most impressed about is that you actually see the down force working. A good driver can carry some speed through a corner up to the point where the car reaches its limit and becomes nervous and hard to control. But the way this car goes through a corner... It is SO stable!! The way you carried decent speed through the corners throughout this lap, and have it so stable tells me 2 things: - that you were definitely not driving on the car's limit (makes sence ;) ) - there is much more potential in this car! Massive kudos to this guy who built the car!

I had two VX220 turbo's and they are massively underrated. The standard aero does suffer from lift at the back at high speed, the different engine cover will have helped, but the rear wing will be a massive help on the track. Oh and worth noting as you mentioned it a couple of times, these cars do not have power steering from the factory, but its not needed. There is a lot you can do to the all alloy (Lotus designed) 2.2 to improve pick up and reduce weight. A balancer shaft delete is a good start and you can get a kit that shortens the auxiliary drive belt and ditches a lot of heavy pulleys. Stiffer engine mounts are a big improvement too. I'm sure this guy will have done all this but obviously you've concentrated on his unique work. Great to see someone with so much enthusiasm and talent.

Hearing what the lad said about the Kevlar reminds me that the Ford RS200 in it's Group B rally spec had Kevlar body panels because the gravel abraded the wheel arches away from the inside with lesser materials. I was told they'd get one rally from a set of Kevlar panels. I got to a drive a 450HP RS200 around the site roads at Dunton. I initially thought OK but not mind blowing, but then the big turbo kicked in, and the acceleration was so violent I was left wondering how anyone could think fast enough to control the car through a Welsh rally stage with trees both sides of the track waiting to kill you if you got it wrong. That remains one of the stand out memories of my life.

I’m a union HVAC mechanic in NYC, now comparing cars to air conditioning doesn’t make much sense, but I can tell you that proper engineering makes all the difference in anything. It’s amazing how the little things are overlooked, or in most cases completely ignored, mostly due to $$$. When the proper thought and effort goes into a project with no financial restraints it’s amazing what can be accomplished.

This is what I love about cars; the aesthetic & bodywork is always pleasing but the engineering is what really captures my interest, the 2013 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento is a perfect example of extreme lightweight engineering. 80% of that car is carbon fiber, there are no seats, instead, they simply glued patches of cushion to the carbon fiber tub to save weight compared to having bucket seats. Really insane engineering.

one thing i would highly recommend for him to do is to bolt a wooden (or rather resin) plank to the bottom of the car where it rubs to keep the damage contained, to keep it measurable and to prevent rubbing on the expensive bits. Ofcourse dont use bolts that stick out to mount it to prevent hurting someone when one of those sheers off and beware of using materials that might catch on fire from the heat of the continuous rubbing.

Kevlar is hardy my friend. It is both durable and as he said abrasive resistant. Not saying a longer event won't eat into it, but for a spin around that track it's awesome! Plus, it's still experimental. He put an airfoil as a front splitter making it a very low wing. Background, 3-4 ish mm kevlar can withstand 100kg of force with ease The difference with kevlar and carbon is fragility. Kevlar you can abrade against a sharp edge and it won't be effected, it's abit slippery. Carbon may splinter under similar situations. Also sidenote kevlar is relatively unaffected by black powder burns. I do model rocketry with both materials.

A few bump-blocks would probably suffice - easier/cheaper to replace and have the benefit of never stalling the airflow under the car completely. If he puts them in line with the tyres, theoretically they shouldn't disturb the airflow too much...
