After an already incredible experience in the Bumburet Valley, I thought a 2 day hike to the Rumbur Valley would not only bring me closer to the Kalash people but also allow me to see more of the beautiful mountain range they call home. I started off from the village of Karakol with my Kalash guide, Raja, following some random irrigation canals. We eventually reached a very unmaintained trail which took us up to the perfectly sculpted Donson Pass. This gain in elevation gave some relief to the sun that had been on our backs all morning. Upon descending, we eventually reached a valley floor where I noticed the first sign of flowing water, human made structures, and farmland. The site of the few Kalash families who were spending their summer in this valley was something I knew a lot of foreigners hadn't seen. We eventually arrived at Rajas' sister's house where I was given a bed (the one they are sitting on in the photo) and fed dinner and breakfast. Although there was a strong language barrier, the time I spent deep in the Hindu Kush mountains with these hospitable Kalash people is something I will never forget!. 🇵🇰
