I think the kind of "genre" of thomas content that sums this up best is adaptations. There are so many videos on the platform that call themselves adaptations but are really just remakes that use a different medium of filming (I.E trainz or merch) with no dialouge or plot pouints changed. And while they are fun to make and a great way to gain experience, I think people should try to branch out more by adding their own ideas or ad libs. A great example of this would be the Trampy Movies, which i have absolutely adored.

Someone who finally speaks my language. I have *many* pet peeves when it comes to the Thomas Fandom in general, and most of my thoughts are well expressed here. Granted I don't watch much fan content, but whenever I do, it's not very distinct from the last. Since trainz is more commonly used for video creation now than it was like 8 years ago, it's all just belended into one in my mind. I'm not a fan of videos made in trainz. I'm not saying they can't be awe-inspiring, but I prefer practical over computers (ironic coming from the one using TS Classic 🙃).

Hearing this puts things in a new light. We need more creativity in this fandom. There's nothing wrong with sticking to canon or anything, and we can pick and choose whatever we want to make it unique. But on the same token, some of us (myself included) may feel left out because it's extremely hard to think outside the box. Either way, great video! Keep up the good work!

I do agree with you on some points, I’ve been think about it since I first watched this video a while ago and even after watching it again I think that some of the videos are getting a bit repetitive; you can only watch the same remakes over and over until it gets boring. While I do want to stick to canon it doesn’t hurt spicing up your AU a little, I have some ideas for my AU like 1. Stafford comes to Sodor in 1917 2. Dennis gets sent away because of his laziness 3. Caitlin is a engine from the LMS 4. Ryan being a jerk and thinking he’s the most important engine (basically the opposite of Stanley in a way) And that’s only a few of them I still have a lot more to say but If I did it would be a lot to read, I really do want to see more characters or locations fully utilized like Bloomer or other obscure characters you can think of. I did plan at some point to maybe add every Thomas character but even that’s a lot for me I won’t guarantee I’ll add every Thomas character out there but I can certainly try right.

That’s the sad thing too, most of this fandom are either too soft or too small minded to put actual thought into anything these days. Oh what’s that, the W&S had 2 L tanks? Charlie & Billy Oh what’s that, the coffee pot in the show is red? That’s the TK&E’s livery now Oh what’s that, Jinty or whoever the fuck appeared once in the railway series & never again? They’re a permanent resident to Sodor now It’s fucking mind numbing how quickly we are to settle on pre existing shit, & also if everyone in the community listens to me say it how it is, they’ll most likely do two things: 1) oh it’s all for fun. Which yeah sure, but a bit of originality goes a longer way than you’d think Or 2) oh this fandom is so “toxic”. That's why I just use the RWS timeline and then add stuff post 2006 (which is when my series starts as it's pretty much a blank slate in the RWS at that point). I do have other things from the show, but really just because I have those characters. Then I added Doctor Who and Transformers, plus FNAF to an extent, in my series because fuck it, it works somehow.

I know what you mean there, mate. It’s all well and good to follow the canon, but a little bit more originality wouldn’t hurt. Personally, when I write a Thomas story, it’s generally in the RWS universe, but that’s about it. If it takes place during the RWS books, that’s fine with me as long as it’s its own thing (especially as some ideas just seem to work better in a specific time period, for me). For the most part, though, all my stories are in my own AU, with their own distinct elements - I just use references to the RWS for continuity, and do my own thing from there. For instance, I might place a character that they might never have been in before and/or might feel completely powerless against - and that extends to other, more complicated issues such as pollution, racism, animal cruelty and death. In addition, I generally only use the whole ‘new/disgraced engine must prove themselves’ narrative trope when I make the odds very significantly against them (as in them risking their very lives to help others) - the whole ‘two engines have a rivalry and humiliate themselves’ I generally use only for comedic plot lines in between more serious narratives, as a bit of light-hearted comic relief. Finally, there are the characters. I am fine with them staying the same as they are in the RWS. After all, they are the characters we all grew up with. But, where possible, I try to add elements that show how much they have changed, or how much they try to hide from others. For example, Edward at one point had some hidden insecurities about himself, James has been put in a situation where he does not even care about his red paint, while also having a good reason as to why he prefers to keep it clean, and Diesel has practically done a full U-turn in his personality, becoming far more kinder and more helpful to the other engines (though don’t less this fool you - cross swords with anyone he cares deeply about, and the old Diesel will return specifically for vengeance!). Heck, I even have plans for Gordon to show a different side to himself! Regarding OCs, I also have quite a fair few under my belt. For instance, there is Beyer, a Holden B12, a sympathetic yet inquisitive sort of engine; Inny, a determined and loyal saddle tank based on ‘Lew’ of the Lyndon & Barnstaple railway, and former member of the Mid-Sodor Railway; Denise, a loving, brave yet timid diesel shunter, and the station pilot at Vicarstown; 7102, Bear’s sister, and the living definition of an evil twin - callous, bullying, and extremely malicious (even going so far as to attempt murder just to achieve her goals); and Tammi, a tractor based on the Massey-Ferguson TE20s, cheerful and enthusiastic, yet with an obsession for speed that can lead to her becoming extremely reckless - with disastrous results! In all, I don’t see a problem to being faithful to what came before, but at the same time, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to add a few of our own elements to things!

But what I don't like are how people copy his opinions and theories to form them as their own when they should just think before they have an opinion or theory about something. Between you and I, whenever people copy opinions on certain things from other people like Tug, James A. Williams, Thomas Theorist, That Yozzy Bloke, PhantomStrider, Mr. Enter, or whoever is another popular reviewer on KZbin, to be frank, it makes them big headed and egotistical. I'm not saying The Unlucky Tug or any of the reviewers I mentioned are egotistical (Mr. Enter is an exception for obvious reasons despite not fully hating him), I'm saying that the people copying their opinions are those that make themselves like egotistical fools.

While I am a proponent for sticking to canon, I do also enjoy putting my own spin on the canon. For instance, Awdry says that Gordon was the experimental prototype for the Gresley A1. In my interpretation, Gordon takes the place of Great Northern (The actual first of the A1s, with its own fascinating history), and Scotsman gets the rebuild that Great Northern got historically under Edward Thompson. He is restored to his A1/A3 condition by Alan Peglar. I love hearing everybody's interpretations of things, and I'm happy to accept it and praise for creativity, even if it doesn't necessarily work within established canon. At least for me, the real creativity is in making my interpretation work within the canon.

I think part of the issue is that decent original characters are a bit hard to come by. For example, a "book" I'm writing originally had Adam in it, but I decided I wanted something different. I ended up creating Dugland (spelling intentional), a crimson LSWR M7 class that despises shunting, and is notable for having a horrible temper (and an undiagnosed case of bipolar disorder). Another thing is that people don't often explore ideas or try new explanations. For example, my "book" explains how Thomas even ended up on Sodor, which was the result of another engine deliberately interfering with plans as to where Thomas was supposed to go. Gordon's rebuild is the result of shoddy maintenance during the Great Depression resulting in his valve gear starting to have regular jamming and similar issues, until one day it just locks up solid. Henry hiding in the tunnel was partially an accident - an improperly attached brake pipe came undone during his travels, and forced the train to stop in the tunnel, with Henry simply taking advantage of this. James was given a standard 0-6-0 layout until he derailed on his first day, with an inquiry finding if he had a front pony truck he likely would not have derailed. If you want an example of someone who HAS gotten creative with their AU, I highly recommend reading the stuff written by TheMidlandEngine on wattpad - he isn't afraid to give interesting ideas a try, such a killer diesels (Warclaws) or giving the engines the ability to move on their own (via use of a Control Lever, as it's known).

Almost a year late, but i just found this so why not I get what you're saying, sticking to headcannon can be so stupidly annoying, considering how much lacking there is, but some TVS exclusive characters can be nice, such as arthur, murdoch, and molly. Anyways, here's a bunch of things in my AU bc why not: Edward dies after exploit Henry is a GNR C1 numbered 1300, a real life engine who had a smaller firebox and also looked a lot different compared to the normal Gordon is an A2 James is a CR 34 and used to work with donald and douglas Percy and Pug are brothers (tho percy was built in 1935 and Pug 1955) Toby is an LNER Y6 (same as original except older and an 0-4-0) Pretty much all I feel like doing rn, maybe ill update this when i expand upon this

I remember fans would often try to use facts from the shows or other fan projects just so they can restrict creativity. Like using phrases like “98462 is a b12 named Alfred” or “Gordon is an A0 not an A1/A3”, just so they can feel powerful and feel they are above. Like sticking to canon is too boring and bland, that’s why I gave my Thomas universe the Sudrian histories treatment and my own treatment to it. Because I want to make my own Thomas universe the way I see fit. Like for example in actual Thomas lore the NWR was formed in 1915 as an actual railway, but in another universe created by say another user, the NWR is a heritage railway formed during the 1950s-1960s when steam was coming to end and just like other heritage railways was dedicated to saving steam engines that are awaiting or are about to be cut up. Again we don’t need to abide by canon, since again it can boring, bland and uncreative. And it’s better if we are making our own Thomas universe to add a unique spin to it, because it’s best to see different concepts then the same thing over and over again.

You do actually raise some good points here. I’m honestly not too big a fan of NWR1991’s work since it’s so heavily focused on official lore and seems to be more grounded to reality than anything. When it comes to my trainz series. I try to make it slightly different by adding in some comedic elements inspired by the actual good Thomas parody content from the early to mid 2000’s. And once in a while I throw in some music from other sources. As far as what lore I stick to. I just treat it as the TV Series with a pinch of RWS and CGI.

I agree with a lot of the points made here. Over the years I've grown quite tired of seeing people remake the same TVS stories over and over again despite all the different mediums people use to make there content I'll only really go out of my way to watch them of I find it visually appealing and well put together. This is the main reason I stopped doing remakes myself because I got to a point where it just felt like I was doing the same thing that multiple other users had already done. I'm more in favor of original stories now and I do appreciate when people do adaptions of some of the less favorable RWS stories (mostly Christopher stories). However it would be nice to see more people attempt alternate storylines with there own spin on Sodor history rather then following every single thing to a Tee from the books and shows I know there are people that already do this to a degree but I find most would rather sit around and talk about there "Ultimate Head Canon/AU" then take it and use it to make interesting spinoff content. Lastly I feel that with there not being any real new interesting official Thomas media for fans to follow and keep up with these days its left the fandom in this sterile & stale state of just clinging onto the old stuff which can get boring and repetitive after so much time has passed.

I've been building my own A.U for THREE years now, and for THREE years I've wanted to make it a series in video format. Seeing this video only encourages me to continue said project. There is certainly a valid point to this "speech" as it contains a lot of TRUTH. The fandom have tendencies to lean towards either R.W.S, or T.V.S or maybe even both simply because we grew up with it or we feel that its necessary because if we don't: We disrespect the source material and its creators. This ISNT specifically true, as the fandom is made to CREATE both "honarable to the original content", and "absoloutely crazy out of this world content". Looking at a youtuber like; Victor Tanzig, its proven to be completely possible , as his world is one totally DIFFERENT from the original one that The Rev.W.V.Awdry created. There was a time, maybe two years ago, when I would be all against creating a totally different headcanon from the island made by Awdry. But now I'm more open to it than ever before. If anything, we need MORE people like Scapyard Studios who is WILLING to do something DIFFERENT. To go beyond the stories and location and characters that are already established and create MORE places and faces never seen before. There is much hidden talent out there in this fandom. Why not let it come to life? PS: When it comes to NWR1991, I completely agree with you Sam...

I think its fun than we create our on headcanons, but, lets be honest, is there are Rule to create then? Do we need to base on ANYTHING from Any of the original canons?, but, DO WE HAVE TO CREATE A HEADCANON? instead of just using a already created one? Yes, Awdry s baseline is the most use to create canons since is the one that make more sense compare to the model era and cgi era, but still, I don’t see the problem with using these canons as well and mix all of then, i know this can be very fucking confusing, but I think this is the whole fun point of the headcanons creation, it is picking up the original or non-original content and crafting then in a way to make sense, and lets be real, non of the canons that exist in this franchise make 100% sense or its perfect, not even Awdry s canon, but again, this doesn’t matter, as long people have fun with these creations. :)

Head-canon is not necessarily a bad thing, when done right. Repeat. When done *right*. I don’t have a problem with people sticking to RWS canon, it’s the baseline and most true to form of the universe created by Wilbert. The thing that does shit me is when people to cram everything from the TV series into the framework. Some elements work, and an episode or two can fit, but most of it is not needed. I have no issue with Trevor being used to help clean up and assist the construction of Knapford Harbour, or Thomas’ branch line being temporarily closed for track repairs due to warped rails, or even discovery of a few old lines in Series 5 (Oliver’s manor, an old castle, an abandoned mine and even the apparent expansion of Tidmouth Hault). However, elements like the supernatural, destructive boulders, the characters becoming their Early Days personalities and all of the events happening in the HiT and CGI era just don’t work. There’s just too much and it’s unfeasible to put everything in. However, even Awdry’s writing isn’t perfect, so having good head-canon is what can make or break the universe as we see it. Hell, I honestly think Gordon shouldn’t be a weird hybrid. It’s not new and I am largely regurgitating what other people think, but it makes more sense that Gordon is an A1 that got his A3 upgrades in the late 30s-early 40s. He is relatively the same, bar his 8 wheeled A1 tender being swapped for a 6 wheeled B1/B17’s tender, but not a weird Stanier-Gresley hybrid. I also think that Pip & Emma are kinda weak as characters, as they have no personality other than “We show up, zoom, we’re fast, oopsie one of us broke down, we bring Prince Charles, we replace Gordon, the end”. The fandom working off of them did help give them more personality, but man are they one of the weakest elements of Chris Awdry’s books and the RWS as a whole. I honestly think they shouldn’t be so humble at the start, I think they honestly should’ve acted like Bowler, or Spamcan, or Diesel, to give Gordon genuine worry in his book that Chris wrote, and create a bit of tension between the engines. They have to have a journey, not just be Gordon with the personality of a toaster.

Agreed. He shows up for 1 illustration, and now he’s everywhere, all takes unoriginal. 98462 is almost always a b12 named Alfred, or, if they’re feeling really daring, a B16. He’s always a terrible engine, and causes explosions, often dying in the process. Never once is he given a redemption arc.

I’m gonna have to say that I completely disagree with you I see sticking to canon as a challenge, and a sort of respect towards the creators of it. Now I’m not talking from personal experience. I like to change things up from time to time but also sometimes it’s just complicated trying to make your own complete cannon when you just wanna tell stories using the existing characters that already exist. You also have to think about your audience and you don’t want to complicate it way too much with having an already existing AU that you have to explain to new audiences when you can just use the original Canon and make things way simpler for everyone. I completely disagree with you about how the community is losing creativity, as we’re still making a bunch of original stories and even if we stick with a TVS Canon, original stories are still original.

Just my personal thoughts, but lack of originality and creativity is part of why I disconnected from the fandom years back. I agree there are people out there who just seem to repeat the same thing that's been done so many times before, or you get those who just completely rip off what other people have done. Then you have those who think they're hot shit and better than everyone else just because others have to fuel their ego and make it seem like they're the greatest Thomas content creator out there, when in reality they're just a complete knob head. That's not to say they're aren't people out there who do produce great original content, but it's very few. These days I try to distance myself from the fandom which is why I'm really reluctant to do anything, although I've really wanted to take some of my own stories I've done in the past and adapt them to ERTL videos. That's just my two cents on the matter.

@@ScrapyardStudios For sure.. also my roster counts for like.. at least 130ish engines, i may be overcounting since there are some gaps in numbering, but the more railway based side is that there's another Sudric island called "Absudria" (or Little Sodor) with it's own railway, that merged with the NWR, AR, and SKR, with my own Sodor railway, called the "Peel Godred Railway" in 2023 (yay this year) to make "Sodor Railways" Politically speaking, i definitely see sodor having some political issues every now and then, lmao, like any other Western society would.

One thing I've started doing is taking note of various tropes and consistent parts of fan content. People bitch about Hit and BWBA (for good reasons) but just end up doing the same formulaic things. Every tone has its own Horror?: Engine 1 (usually Edward) tells a ghost story and Engine 2 (James, Thomas, Gordon, whoever) scoffs it off and says they're stupid for believing such things. There's a "don't say I didn't warn you" bit and then they get proven wrong and are scared shitless. Also it might just be me, but I can't take a video seriously when they start using undertale/deltarune music in the background. It just feels out of place. There's a few others but I don't want to kick too many nests.

There’s a very paper thin handful of fan content that I take seriously nowadays because most of it is either A) joining the dead horse beating with tropes & talking about the show in general for a video & B) using show elements such as music (the worst aspect for me), model series proportions & just overall not being particularly interesting both visually & thematically. To be completely honest, I used to watch only fan content as a pose to the show itself, however I’m watching little to no fan content in recent days. I’m not distancing myself from this place, fucking god forbid! But it’s getting or gotten to a point where nobody’s doing anything interesting & prefers to create echo chambers & immatations of the same unoriginal fucking slop. So realistically, the only hornets nest being kicked is the denial factor of all of it. You’ve bout to worry about. If people are upset, they can get fucked.

I love the series but the echo chambers are insufferable and so much fan content feels like it blurs together regardless of quality. There's so much that can be done but it's always just another story about the same characters and locations. The tv models, I can only assume are because those are the easiest available for trainz and are nostalgic. But at this point, ehhh? It's impressive how people can replicate them, but why not more realistic ones or something else, non-trainz entirely? Seriously, there's the pre-grouping railways, several whole branches, the 1970s as a whole, etc. More than enough creative material. Or hell, new takes on the series. Be creative.

That’s exactly why I’m doing Pre Grouping Engines over on SoundCloud. We have fuck all to go off character wise apart from what the railway’s locomotives were (mind you I’ve broken that mould a bit by having Terry in the fleet) but that’s what makes it more fun. Historical notes are a big help sure & it’s a massive factor in making sense of it all, but the saying less is more really comes into play with this kind of thing. Shoutout to Mike as well for his take on the W&S for it was an extremely entertaining listening experience. & another thing about sticking to official media that’s just coming back to mind on the W&S, one thing that bugs me is the fact that in PH&R, it says that 4 engines ran the line, & since the lecture last year - being of rough notes of the lore - people now think that it’s 3 that run it. Of course I’m not saying DON’T do one or the other, but it’s frustrating to me since the lectures were in 82/83 & PH&R was 87, meaning Awdry likely changed it to 4 & seeing as it is/was in publication, makes more sense especially considering how long it’s been accepted for. Maybe a contradiction for me to say that, but it ties into what I said in the video potentially dropping something really interesting because it doesn’t apply to what’s information that’s kinda come out of the blue. There’s a whole other video discussion about acceptance of other things waiting to happen honestly - the whole 98462 & 87546 headfuckery mentioned in the video is the main one - but my point is that just because info is different to what’s already believed, or accepted from other fans’ works, doesn’t mean you need to stick by it. Granted I’m also guilty of acceptance issues, with 87546 looking like a b17 for example, but it doesn’t hurt to do your own thing entirely.
