I hate how both modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles are basically time bombs because of the way Sony and Microsoft did their SSDs. It absolutely did not need to be this way, SSDs are just fine on PCs. But Sony and Microsoft botched things so badly that I kinda wish they had kept using mechanical hard drives instead.
@jochenrudiger Жыл бұрын
Sony had the correct approach when they designed the PS4 (Pro). Just a simple bay, which allowed a swap of the mass storage. Which Muppet thought it may be wise to solder it onto the mainboard?
@yewtewbstew547 Жыл бұрын
@@jochenrudiger Either they're muppets or it's intentional. By the time SSDs start failing, Sony and Microsoft both know that a) the console is likely out of warranty and b) the user has likely accumulated multiple games that they wish to continue playing.

Would it help in future to use M.2 drives to run games, and help reduce the read/write cycles on the on board SSD's, and limit it to just running the OS?
@ryutenmen Жыл бұрын
even with an M2 SSD added for additional storage, everything you download goes first trough the soldered SSD as "temp" files and then moved onto M2. So the soldered one will get worn out no matter what, maybe a bit less with an M2 installed from which you run the games but the heavy lifting will still be done by the soldered one.
@DeadPhoenix86DP Жыл бұрын
@@ryutenmen It will only be used for firmware updates. Games can be installed onto the M.2 Directly. However SSD's have a pretty long life-span since they have no moving parts. Just Use M.2 only for games that should make the onboard SSD last a lot longer.
@ryutenmen Жыл бұрын
@@DeadPhoenix86DP you either are very misinformed and by extension you unknowingly spread misinformation, or you knowingly spread that misinformation; both are bad outcomes. 1) You don't know if that soldered SSD is of good quality. 2) everything that you download doesn't direct go to the M2 SSD - it goes through the soldered SSD as temporary files, then it gets moved to the M2 or external/USB ones. I've already said that in the previous message, you just chose to ignore it, then tried to contradict by adding no pertinent explanation. That's how OS based systems works. Learn it.

Hey Phil, I'm having a similar problem right now. My PS5 sporadically boots into safe mode. As soon as I want to select one of the 7 options where the PS5 restarts, it shuts down. When I try to turn it back on I get a 2-3 second BLOD. Sometimes I just have a long pulsing BLOD. It always varies whether it boots into safe mode or crashes again. I suspect it's the SSD controller. Do you have other ideas?
@JohnGotts Жыл бұрын
In my opinion we have Apple to thank for manufacturers increasingly soldering everything on. Also, something to think about: Hard drives were and continue to be superior to SSD's. They last forever. Properly stored drives from the 1980's continue to work fine. No hard drive was ever designed to *not* be connected by cable. SSD's have a limited number of writes and you're done. If you're lucky the device will become read-only. If you're unlucky all of your data is lost. For the hard drives that have failed on me due to head crashes, I've lost no more than 50 kB worth of data. But most have continued to work fine after 25 years until I e-wasted them due to lack of space. Soldered SSD's are the worst of all worlds. It's like bad caps that in actual fact ruin a computer, rather than just being an inconvenience. As soon as everyone started embracing SSD's we were doomed to have them become soldered into products and kamikaze the entire device. Or maybe device owners get wise and everybody learns to reball with ease.

Consoles are getting worse and worse over the years, in the past we didnt have these problems, in the ps3, xbox 360, ps4 and xbox one in all revisions of all those consoles the hdd could be changed with no issues, in older consoles this was not necesary couse the little memory they had was for the simple operating system and it was not memory you could access and install stuff, they never failed couse they were simple. Now that they do fail we need them to be replazable, not like xbox which is a scam what they have done, the hardware itself the little chip ssd can be changed but the software part if you dont have a backup of the old drive and do it every update is probably unfixable, its such a pity with the series x being a so well made system and that it has a issue as big as that. Nice video Phil.

tipical nothing suprises me,with these console companys ,,xbox red light death was found out years after now sony starting to produce faults popping up,, when will these companys realise social media and youtube place to see all this , designers need to combat these issues and listen to main people who repair them take note sony , microsoft , nintendo, watch youtube, engineers videos, makes for a good watch plus, you can then see all the issues, in your designs, clearly sony now starting to get issues, they should make a console that you can upgrade easy ie, switch parts just like a pc,, how cool would this be, if they did upgrade ram,, cpu , ssd controllers , all swoppable on beds , and make parts available. they would sell more, and it would be a fad to keep consoles moving, people would spend more money on them, these people make more money onthe games, than the consoles. so why not.
